An Italian boxer forfeited her bout at the Paris Olympics after only 46 seconds on Thursday, refusing to continue to fight an Algerian opponent who had been banned from a women’s event last year in a dispute related to her gender. The Italian boxer, Angela Carini, withdrew after her Algerian opponent, Imane Khelif, landed a powerful blow that appeared to strike Carini square in the face, knocking her head to the left. Khelif was permitted to compete at the Olympics even though she has been barred from some women’s competitions for not meeting eligibility requirements to compete in women’s events. Carini and Khelif exchanged only a few punches before Carini walked away and abandoned the bout — an extremely unusual occurrence in Olympic boxing. They were allowed to compete in Paris by the IOC task force, which has run the past two Olympic boxing tournaments. Olympic boxing reached gender parity for the first time this year, with 124 men and 124 women competing in Paris. Several sports have updated their gender rules over the past three years, including World Aquatics, World Athletics and the International Cycling Union.

Maurice El Medioni, an Algerian-born pianist who fused Jewish and Arab musical traditions into a singular style he called “Pianoriental,” died on March 25 in Israel. To the Editor:Re “Trump’s ’25 Immigration Plan: Giant Camps, Mass Deportation” (front page, Nov. 12):After choking on my coffee reading this excellent in-depth piece, I contemplated the America we will live in if these ambitious and aggressive ideas bear fruit. Do the architects of this plan really believe we will have a stronger, safer and more prosperous country by setting up giant immigrant camps and carrying out mass deportations? I am descended from “white” privilege and members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. My family has grown stronger in recent years by the blending of ethnic, cultural and religious origins through marriage and adoption — with Indonesian, Malaysian, Algerian, Romanian, Iranian and Danish heritages combined with Scot Irish and English ones. We have family members who are Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, atheist and agnostic as well as Episcopalian, Quaker and Catholic.
