Some Brazilian users reconnected with X on Wednesday despite the Supreme Court's recent nationwide ban, the result of the social network apparently changing the way its servers are accessed. That rendered X effectively inaccessible in the country until Wednesday, with AP journalists among those who had access. It acts as a proxy between users and X's servers, filtering traffic and preventing the original Internet Protocol (IP) address from being recognized, Diogenes told The Associated Press. Former president Jair Bolsonaro celebrated the return of the social network. Some Brazilian X users trumpeted the platform's return — with several addressing de Moraes directly, vowing that they weren't using a VPN.

Still, the seizure indicates that Musk will face significant financial costs to sustain battles over his stated goal of protecting free speech online. Like the US, Brazil has enshrined speech protections in its constitution, but the Brazilian government has wider discretion to ban certain kinds of speech than the US government. The battle between Musk and de Moraes has escalated for months, leading to the seizure of funds from X and SpaceX. It didn't even have a chance to defend itself," The Associated Press reported Brazilian jurist Lênio Streck said on social media.

Brazil's supreme court announced Friday that it ordered banks to transfer funds from Starlink and X accounts to pay fines the court levied against Elon Musk's social network. Following the transfers, the court ordered that the frozen bank accounts and assets of X and Starlink be released, saying there was no longer any need to keep them. The court suspended X at the end of August, and the suspension remains in place. On Sept. 5, his long-time collaborator at the helm of SpaceX, COO Gwynne Shotwell, also took shots at the Brazil supreme court online. Backers of de Moraes and the STF have seen the orders against X Corp. as an assertion of Brazilian sovereignty.

Hours before the ban went into effect, numerous X users expressed how crucial the Brazilian community is to stan Twitter. Several Brazilian stan accounts shared their final posts with the tag #MeuUltimoTweet, or #MyLastTweet, and many have not posted since. The reaction from the international stan community to the Brazilian X ban underscores the contributions Brazilian fans have made to the evolution of online fandom. Brazilian fans have created popular memes, influenced how fans communicate with each other and introduced new terminology, Amado said. “Being a big stan account or an update account feels like it’s very invisible work,” Rodrigues said.

Brazil's X users, left casting about for a new platform, mostly started washing up on Threads and Bluesky. Everyone hadn't been on X; Brazil's social masses are primarily on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook . So as X went dark in this highly online country of 213 million, its users started migrating. Meta declined to provide specifics on Brazilian users. Bluesky gained 2.6 million users since last week, 85% from Brazil, the company said Wednesday, boosting its total to over 8 million.

Brazil's recent ban of Elon Musk's social media platform X has boosted the profile of its smaller rival, Bluesky, as people search for alternatives to voice their opinions. On Saturday, the company also said that users from Brazil were setting new all-time highs for activity. The reported uptick in the platform's traffic comes after a Brazilian Supreme Court justice ordered a nationwide suspension of the X platform on Friday. A Supreme Court panel affirmed the ruling on Monday. X is estimated to have over 22 million users in Brazil.

A panel of Brazil's federal supreme court justices voted unanimously to uphold orders suspending the use of Elon Musk's social network X nationwide. X had earlier defied court requests to take down accounts or posts that it said violated Brazil's laws on political misinformation and hate speech online. The court also froze the financial assets of another Musk-led business, satellite internet service Starlink, in Brazil to ensure his social network would pay its fines. Brazil's telecoms regulator Anatel instructed internet service providers including Starlink to block access to X in the country until it complies with the court orders. However, some social media users in Brazil are moving to other social networks.

Brazilians are fighting back against the country's ban on the social media platform X, sending demand for VPNs skyrocketing despite threats that users could be fined nearly $9,000 a day for finding workarounds to access Elon Musk's site. AdvertisementAlternatives to X, like Bluesky and Threads, have also seen a spike in new users. The X alternatives were the first and second most downloaded iPhone apps in the country over the weekend. Others are concerned the ban is oppressive and hypocritical, given de Moraes' goal of combating authoritarian extremism in the country.

Brazil's supreme court on Friday ordered a nationwide suspension of Elon Musk's social network X after the company vowed to defy earlier court orders concerning content moderation and the appointment of a legal representative in the country. Hours later, the court issued a second order suspending some of the measures in its first 51-page order against X. A suspension of X in Brazil could cause business problems for Musk's already embattled company. Musk has repeatedly denounced de Moraes' court orders as censorship. In its Thursday statement, X said de Moraes court had taken "illegal actions" against the company.

X Global Government Affairs issued a statement on Thursday evening ahead of an anticipated suspension of its platform in Brazil. CNN —Elon Musk has stepped up online attacks on a Supreme Court judge threatening to suspend social media platform X in Brazil, calling him “an evil dictator” in an ongoing feud between the two men. Justice Alexandre de Moraes had threatened to suspend X if Musk did not appoint a new legal representative of the company in Brazil and settle any outstanding daily fines within 24 hours. X announced earlier this month that it would close its operations and fire its staff in Brazil due to what it called “censorship orders” from the judge. The statement from the Supreme Court was posted at around 8.30 p.m. local time on Wednesday, giving Musk until Thursday evening local time to respond. The responsibility lies solely with Alexandre de Moraes.”Later that day, Musk reiterated the official X statement, saying his company had “no choice” but to close Brazilian operations.

CNN —The US men’s soccer team suffered a brutal return to Olympic action as it was beaten 3-0 by host nation France in its opening match of the Paris Games on Wednesday. The soccer tournament at this year’s Olympics kicked off two days before the Opening Ceremony, with teams consisting predominantly of under-23 players. Playing in its first Olympic Games since 2008, the young US men’s team knew an opening match against the host would be a tough test but, for the first hour at least, it looked more than capable of causing an upset. It will then play Guinea in the final group match on July 30. Meanwhile, Spain beat Uzbekistan 2-1, while Japan thrashed Paraguay 5-0 in some of the other standout scores of the soccer tournament so far.

CNN —Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a dip in the city’s River Seine on Wednesday in a bid to demonstrate the cleanliness of the river for the Olympics. There have been ongoing concerns that E. coli in the Seine could pose a risk to athlete health. Julien De Rosa/AFP/Getty ImagesOfficial data shows one-off rainfall events can quickly cause E. coli levels to spike again, and as recently as June 30, following rain the previous day, E. coli levels increased to around 2000 CFU/100mL at Alexandra III Bridge. Tests last week for the first time showed acceptable bacteria levels, according to a statement by the mayor’s office. As recently as June 30, following rain the previous day, E. Coli levels increased to around 2000 CFU/100mL at Alexandra III Bridge. But E. Longer term trends show there has been a “significant improvement” in water quality, according to Dan Angelescu, the company’s CEO.
