Santos, 16, is a violinist in an orchestra made up of young musicians from the sprawling Mare "favela", home to more than 140,000 people, where violent police raids and clashes between drug gangs are commonplace. Created in 2010, the "Mare do Amanha" orchestra is the brainchild of Carlos Prazeres and his father, Armando, a musical conductor who was kidnapped and killed in 1999. Instead of turning his grief into hatred, Prazeres decided to use music to get children off the streets and away from drug dealing. Sousa was part of the orchestra group that met Francis in the Vatican in 2017, an experience she will never forget. “The recent heat waves and scorching summer temperatures demonstrate the economic cost of heat stress,” Chris Lafakis, Moody’s Analytics’ director of economic research, wrote in an emailed response to a CNN query. Moody’s Analytics estimates that chronic physical risk from heat stress could reduce worldwide GDP by up to 17.6% by 2100. The losses are steepest in sectors such as agriculture and construction, but no industry or business is immune, she said. “Every summer we have a stretch [of excessively hot weather], where it might last from four days up to a week,” he said. “We have to look at the potential of our business model shifting to a nine-month facility going forward,” she said.

CNN —Shocking footage of a young child hanging from the arms of a detained woman through the barred door of a truck in the Dominican Republic has generated outrage in the country. Social media videos of the incident, which occurred Saturday in the municipality of Santo Domingo, showed the child dangling off the back of a moving immigration control truck used by local authorities to transport detainees. The child only appears to be kept from falling by a woman inside the vehicle, whose arms stretch through the bars of the door. An immigration agent sitting on the back platform of the truck, next to the child, seems to be speaking as he extends a hand and rests it on the child’s shoulder. The woman, a Haitian national, was released after the agents became aware of the situation, it also said.

Jaril Valenciano didn’t host big parties until September when he moved into a bigger apartment in San Francisco. The 31-year-old, who works at a software startup, hosted weekly “The Last of Us” watch parties at the beginning of the year and regularly has larger get-togethers. His biggest headache was figuring out how many of the invited guests actually planned to show up. That’s why he turned to a relatively new service called Partiful, which he has used more than 30 times since September.

Top-four finish not in Liverpool's hands, says Klopp

"Other teams are in much better positions, as long as they win games we have no chance," Klopp told reporters ahead of Saturday's clash against ninth-placed Brentford. We have 59 points and United has 63, so we can get 71 maximum (at the end of the season). The way they played over this season, the top four teams, no one looks like losing more games than they win, Klopp said. James Milner is expected to leave Liverpool after eight years at the end of the season and Klopp described how highly he valued the 37-year-old midfielder. Klopp said Diogo Jota and captain Jordan Henderson will be assessed ahead of the match while Roberto Firmino remains sidelined.
May 3 (Reuters) - Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara will miss the remainder of the season to undergo a minor operation for a hip issue, British media reported on Tuesday. The Spaniard has played 28 times for Liverpool in all competitions this season and only recently returned to action after two months out with a hip flexor problem. Alcantara is set to miss Premier League games against Fulham, Brentford, Leicester City, Aston Villa and Southampton as they push for a top-four finish. Liverpool are fifth on 56 points, seven behind fourth-placed Manchester United who have a game in hand.
