CNN —CNN on Thursday will do something no network has done in more than 35 years – host its own general election presidential debate. Thursday night’s presidential debate, a marketing coup for CNN and its new chief executive, Mark Thompson, will offer the network a bright spot – and expectations of record ratings, even if viewers end up watching the debate on other networks. No matter where viewers tune in to watch the primetime matchup between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, it will be clear this is a CNN debate. Rival networks, for example, have agreed to use CNN in the programming title and keep the red CNN logo on screen throughout the debate. For CNN, the branding boost from the debate may provide a much-needed shot in the arm.

Trump wants to extend all of the tax cuts, which could further explode the debt without corresponding spending cuts. When Trump and Republicans enacted the current tax structure, they made individual tax cuts temporary and most of the corporate tax cuts permanent. Biden has proposed additional taxes on those making more than $400,000 to address Medicare’s solvency, among other ideas, but does not have a detailed Social Security plan. The dirty little secret in all of this is, Medicare and Social Security are going insolvent on their own.

Shortly after the announcement that Jerry West, the Hall of Fame basketball player and executive, had died at age 86 on Wednesday, the N.B.A. emailed a statement to the news media from Adam Silver, the league’s commissioner, extolling the virtues of Mr. West as “a basketball genius” who contributed to every facet of the league over a period of more than 60 years. Just above the statement was an image of the league’s iconic logo: A rounded rectangle, blue on one side, red on the other, with a white silhouette of a player dribbling up the middle. In keeping with one of the league’s oddest traditions, no acknowledgment was made that the man dribbling at the top of the statement was, in fact, Mr. West. hired Alan Siegel — the branding expert who created Major League Baseball’s logo — to create a logo for the league in 1969 and he based the image off a photograph of Mr. West, who was a star player for the Los Angeles Lakers at the time.

Spain’s Parliament approved a landmark law on Thursday that grants amnesty to Catalan separatists involved in the illegal October 2017 independence referendum, a reprieve that could apply to hundreds of people, including Carles Puigdemont, the former Catalan leader who has been living in self-imposed exile for seven years. The vote for the bill, introduced last year by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s ruling Socialist Party, was 177 to 172, the speaker of Spain’s lower house of parliament announced. Crucial support came from two Catalan separatist parties, Junts (Together) and Esquerra Republicana (Republican Left), each with seven seats in Spanish parliament. Spain’s main opposition conservative Popular Party and the far-right Vox party voted against the measure. Just before the vote, the Madrid regional government president Isabel Diaz Ayuso, of the Popular Party, vowed to appeal against the new law to Spain’s Constitutional Court, the highest in the land.

But the real story from a technical perspective is that this week's move appears to complete a "big base breakout" pattern — a sign of potentially much greater gains in the coming months. This resistance level continued to hold, with subsequent peaks through the end of 2022 and into 2023 all hitting this same price point before rebounding lower. In March of this year, SQSP finally broke above this resistance level around $33.70, which then became a support level in late April. "We believe Ancora has presented a compelling case for supporting a substantial overhaul of the Company's current leadership," Glass Lewis said in its report. A second Norfolk Southern union said Friday it would back activist Ancora's efforts to elect seven directors and oust CEO Alan Shaw, a sign of labor dissatisfaction with management and a key endorsement for Ancora as Norfolk Southern's shareholder meeting nears. The BLET Teamsters, which represents the engineers and trainsmen who operate Norfolk Southern's locomotives, said Friday they're throwing their weight behind Ancora. "It's a privilege to receive support from the BLET Teamsters, who believe in our plan to improve performance, safety and employee relations at Norfolk Southern," Barber said. The latest endorsement, coupled with the support of the BMWED Teamsters earlier this week, means roughly half of NSC's unionized employees are supporting the activist, Ancora said. "We recognize the hard work that the BLET Teamsters members and all of the Company's employees put in every day," Boychuk said.
