Japan Airlines and Boeing reach deal for 21 737 MAX jets

REUTERS/Issei KatoMarch 23 (Reuters) - Japan Airlines (9201.T) has placed its first-ever order for the Boeing 737 MAX, announcing a plan on Thursday to buy 21 jets to replenish its narrowbody fleet. The JAL order ensures a foothold for the MAX with Japan's flagship carrier as Boeing strives to undermine Airbus's lead in the narrowbody market. "One problem that has hobbled the (737 MAX) program is that despite good orders, there haven't been as many high profile users. ANA and Boeing concluded the MAX deal in July. The Boeing 737-800 currently makes up the largest portion of JAL's narrowbody fleet, with the carrier owning 47 jets and leasing another 17 737s, according to JAL.
BERLIN, March 18 (Reuters) - Germany's Defence Ministry wants to buy 82 Airbus (AIR.PA) H-145M civilian helicopters and convert some of them into combat helicopters to replace its Tiger combat fleet, Business Insider reported, citing military internal documents. Germany last year shifted its defence policy after Russia invaded Ukraine, committing 100 billion euros ($107 billion) to modernize the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces. The Defence Ministry was not immediately available for comment. The H-145M helicopters are approved for military use but are not designed as combat aircraft and the Bundeswehr has concerns about the machine's combat suitability and crew protection, which the ministry has ignored so far, the report added. IndiGo, owned by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd (INGL.NS), is also comparing the A320neo with the Boeing 737 MAX as it weighs a major new order for narrow-body jets, they added. The split between wide- and narrow-body jets was not immediately clear. An IndiGo representative told Reuters the airline is constantly in talks with manufacturers as it plans its next phase of growth. IndiGo, which counts a 55% share of the domestic market, is widely expected to maintain Airbus as its supplier of narrow-body jets to squeeze out further economies of scale. Industry publication CAPA reported last month that IndiGo was looking at around 500 jets as Air India closed its own deal.
The firms are pushing for billions of dollars' worth of purchases expected after Australia's long-awaited defence strategic review (DSR) is made public next month, setting out the force structure and equipment required over the next decade. The government's aim is to "speed up the acquisition cycle" and move as quickly as possible once the review is public, Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy told reporters on Wednesday. Australia ranked 12th globally in military spending in 2021 at $31.8 billion, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Lockheed was selected last year alongside Raytheon Technologies Corp (RTX.N) to accelerate the manufacture and delivery of guided weapons to Australia. In-country assembly, and eventually manufacturing, are a focus of the project that aims to build local stockpiles, said Ken Kota, vice president of Lockheed's Australian defence strategic capabilities office.

Boeing has temporarily halted deliveries of its 787 Dreamliners so it can do additional analysis on a fuselage component, the Federal Aviation Administration told CNBC Thursday. The company won't be able to resume deliveries until they can show the FAA they solved the issue. A few months later, United Airlines said it was planning to buy 100 787 Dreamliners, with the option to buy 100 more, to replace some of its older stock. Read the full statement from the FAA:"Boeing temporarily halted deliveries of 787 Dreamliners after notifying the FAA that it is conducting additional analysis on a fuselage component.
However, Boiardi said an earlier proposal from the industry for totally single-pilot flying by 2030 was "absolutely not realistic", because automation had not advanced far enough and solo flying required a level of safety equivalent to existing operations. Solo flying, even in cruise, needs approval from the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organization, individual airlines and their pilot unions. Even limited solo flying, however, is dividing airlines and raising public fears, while sparking a growing backlash among pilot groups like the European Cockpit Association. Airbus said in a statement it was studying the concept of a single pilot in the cruise phase but not wholly single-pilot flights. Consumer resistance, however, could result in single-pilot flying starting with cargo flights, industry officials said.
Rising interest rates have caused corporate bond yields to increase significantly in Europe and the U.S. —with major implications for companies with large amounts of debt. "As interest rates continue to rise, corporate bond yields may see further upward pressure, we think that stocks with low debt exposure and a higher quality of debt should outperform," analysts from investment bank Bernstein said in a note to clients on Jan. 19. Additionally, investors tend to gravitate toward lower-debt stocks during recessions, as they become less risky due to their ability to cover higher interest payments from their earnings without borrowing additional funds at much interest rates, the analysts said. Multinational Dutch conglomerate Koninklijke had the largest potential upside of 27% among the stocks on the list. All the stocks listed, including Publicis , LVMH , and L'Oreal , are accessible to U.S. investors as ADRs on U.S. exchanges and over-the-counter markets.

Boeing has seen 737 MAX customer demand recover briskly after two crashes and the COVID-19 pandemic battered the airline industry. However, analysts warn Boeing still faces major risk to increasing aircraft production, as supply chain recovery and additional regulatory requirements could delay schedules. Investors will also be looking for Boeing to shed light on why it is taking so long to deliver MAX planes sitting in storage. Boeing aims to gradually grow production of the 787 to five a month, but slowed production after a December parts delay, Reuters previously reported.

About 100 of the Dreamliners in the order will replace Boeing 767s and some of its Boeing 777s. Chicago-based United's entire wide-body fleet is made up of Boeing planes. United said its order was the largest wide-body sale to a U.S. carrier. United Airlines is buying 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliners with the option to purchase 100 more new jets that will fly its longest routes and replace less fuel-efficient, decades-old planes. The carrier is also purchasing 56 additional Boeing 737 Max narrow-body planes and exercising options for 44 more, adding to an order for close to 300 new Boeing and Airbus single aisle planes United made last year.

REUTERS/Fabrizio Bensch/File PhotoMARIGNANE, France, Sept 22 (Reuters) - The head of Airbus Helicopters (AIR.PA) has urged Europe to back its domestic defence industry when launching major new military programmes, as a row simmers over U.S. arms imports. Airbus Helicopters is marking 30 years since it was born through a Franco-German merger prompted by the development of the original Tiger version, sponsored initially by France and Germany and later Spain. While it competes with Boeing and Leonardo (LDOF.MI) on attack helicopters, Airbus agreed earlier this year to maintain H-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopters sold by Boeing to Germany. But he laid down a marker that Airbus would fight for future replacements of core programmes like the NH-90. Airbus has teamed up with Leonardo to research technology to be fed into the NGRC programme, backed by the European Union's European Defence Fund.
