Mexico gained tens of thousands of jobs when U.S. and foreign automakers moved their plants to Mexico under the free trade pact to take advantage of much lower wages. But the idea that Chinese parts — or even whole cars — could be piggybacking on that arrangement to further hollow out the U.S. auto industry has enraged some people north of the border. Mexico hopes the rules of the agreement would prevent the U.S. or Canada from simply walking away when the trade pact comes up for review in 2026. Mexican officials say they have fewer imports of Chinese parts and products than the United States does. In the end, Mexico may be forced to crack down on Chinese imports, but it won't be easy.

Millions of Americans facing retirement are worried they won't be financially prepared — or fear that they'll have to work forever. Russian President Vladimir Putin this week indicated he's willing to take part in negotiations. "Given its own track record in Ukraine, Russia has a history of taking 'a crunch at a time,'" Paul Cormarie, a policy analyst at the RAND Corporation, told BI. President-elect Donald Trump on Friday asked Scott Bessent, a top fundraiser to his campaign, to serve as secretary of the Treasury Department, two sources familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News. And with Trump proposing aggressive tariffs on imports from countries spanning the globe, the new Treasury Department chief will have to manage relationships with global finance ministers who may choose to retaliate with tariffs of their own. With inflation moderating over the past year, the Powell-led Fed has cut interest rates as part of a bid to stop high borrowing costs from unduly raising unemployment. In Trump’s first term, he tapped banker Steven Mnuchin to lead the Treasury Department. But his tenure at the Treasury Department was more stable than those of other high-level Cabinet posts in Trump’s first term.

The Texas Board of Education narrowly voted Friday to allow Bible-based curriculum in elementary schools. Greg Abbott has voiced support for the lesson plans, which were provided by the state’s education agency that oversees the more than 5 million students in Texas public schools. Staci Childs, who is an attorney and a Democrat who voted against the Bible curriculum at Friday's hearing, said she believes it will be challenged in court. The new Texas curriculum follows Republican-led efforts in neighboring states to give religion more of a presence in public schools. A group of German economics professors released an extensive study earlier this year about airport moving sidewalks. “The design of Denver International Airport is such that our moving walkways run where our gates are located. Aleinikoff said that while he doesn’t think moving sidewalks are inherently unsafe, they do require regular maintenance, and he says the “teeth” at the end of the moving sidewalks can be “pretty sharp.” Gow has, Aleinikoff said, made a full recovery.

The Kremlin said Friday that its attack using a new ballistic missile was a warning to Ukraine's "reckless" Western allies, the culmination of a week of escalating threats from President Vladimir Putin. The latest round of saber rattling from Putin and Kim has come during a week in which the war in Ukraine passed 1,000 days and with Washington preparing for a change in leadership. Still, Western officials and many analysts have sought to play down what they said was a clear effort to intimidate Kyiv and its backers. And a top official in U.S. ally South Korea shone new light on what Kim may be getting out of his Putin partnership.
