Since Otto Schott invented specialty glass in 1884, the simple material has become a cornerstone of modern technology, and driving innovation. From semiconductors to clean energy, home tech, and electric vehicles, glass is the silent enabler of progress. Specially engineered laser glass helped researchers achieve what was once thought impossible: creating more energy from a reaction than was put into it. The light, amplified by active laser glass and focused through precisely crafted optical glass, delivered significant energy to a tiny fuel pellet, triggering a fusion reaction that produced a net energy gain. The fusion reaction generated 3.15 megajoules of energy, exceeding the 2.05 megajoules of laser energy delivered to the target.

Both companies see massive potential for the technology, with a grand vision for AR glasses to usurp smartphones as the next generation of computing. Microsoft has also invested in AR technology for well over a decade, launching its HoloLens headset for enterprise in 2016. While Snap and Meta have debuted AR prototypes, they're still years away from selling those devices to consumers. Snap similarly plans to invest in building out its ecosystem, renting its AR glasses to developers who commit to paying $99 a month for a year for the Spectacles. Zuckerberg's reveal of Orion late last month has triggered a level of enthusiasm that's unfamiliar in the metaverse. He showed off the gadget — a pair of black, thick-framed AR glasses — to the live audience before placing it on his face. In the meantime, Meta is looking to build on the success of its second-generation Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The smart glasses went viral on TikTok during the holiday shopping season, and sales exceeded both companies' expectations. Meta is also opening a pop-up shop to showcase the smart glasses and to get them in front of more consumers.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has surpassed Jeff Bezos as the world’s second richest person, reports CNBC. Zuckerberg’s net worth reached $206.2 billion on Thursday, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, topping the $205.1 billion net worth of the former Amazon CEO and president. The Facebook co-founder now trails Tesla chief Elon Musk by roughly $50 billion, the index showed.
