The man accused of killing Laken Riley earlier this year "went out hunting for females" on the day the nursing student in Georgia was slain, prosecutors told a judge Friday on the first day of Jose Antonio Ibarra's trial. "When Laken Riley refused to be his rape victim, he bashed her skull in with a rock repeatedly," prosecutor Sheila Ross said in her opening statement. Amazon is phasing out its free-to-watch streaming service Freevee as insiders speculate about potential layoffs in the tech giant's entertainment arm. The phaseout comes as three Amazon insiders told BI they believe MGM Studios could soon be hit by layoffs as the company looks to cut costs. Amazon already cut hundreds of jobs across Prime Video and MGM Studios teams earlier this year. It stopped greenlighting new Freevee originals and had been moving some Freevee employees to other parts of MGM Studios. It also competed for resources with Prime Video and created brand confusion with some viewers.

CNN —Qatar is suspending its role as a mediator in talks between Israel and Hamas after concluding that the two sides are no longer negotiating in good faith, two sources familiar with the situation tell CNN. Qatar, which has long hosted Hamas’ political office in Doha, has alongside Egypt served as an intermediary for the two sides, which do not officially maintain direct contact. During a temporary ceasefire mediated by Qatar and Egypt last November, Hamas released 105 hostages and Israel released 240 Palestinian prisoners. “As a consequence, the Hamas political office no longer serves its purpose.”Hamas has insisted that any agreement with Israel must lead to a permanent end to the war in Gaza. In July he effectively spiked a draft hostage and ceasefire deal by introducing a raft of new, 11th-hour demands.

CNN —Ancient DNA has revealed surprises about the identities of some people who perished in the ancient Roman town of Pompeii after a volcanic eruption, overturning misconceptions about their genetic relationships, ancestry and sex. Ash and volcanic rock called pumice then covered Pompeii and its residents, preserving scenes of the victims of the city’s destruction like an eerie time capsule. While the Greeks, Etruscans and Samnites attempted to conquer it, Pompeii became a Roman colony, the study authors noted. In 2015, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii began efforts to restore 86 of the 104 casts originally made by Fiorelli. Together, park scientists and the study authors are working on a larger project to better understand the genetic diversity present in Pompeii during the Roman Empire.

On Monday, a Randall County Judge ruled in a separate case that he can keep his parental rights over his 1-year-old child with Torres. However, on Monday, Judge James W. New York CNN —Striking workers at embattled plane maker Boeing voted Monday to accept the company’s most recent offer, ending the costliest strike in the United States in more than 25 years. The International Association of Machinists (IAM) said rank-and-file members voted by 59% to approve the deal. But the deal did not restore the traditional pension plan they lost in 2014 from their previous labor deal. But despite the deep financial problems, Boeing had little choice but to settle the strike and get the workers back on the job. CNN —More severe weather is expected in the South and the Southern Plains Monday, including in Oklahoma, where residents are surveying the destruction from tornado-spawning storms that injured at least 11 people and leveled homes over the weekend. Tornado sirens rang out Monday morning in Oklahoma City, where residents are still surrounded by the destruction and debris caused by the weekend’s severe storms, after the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning. There were no confirmed tornadoes or reports of damage from Monday morning’s storms. A level 2 of 5 threat of severe thunderstorms spans from central and eastern Texas to the Illinois-Missouri border – including Dallas, threatening damaging wind gusts, large hail and tornadoes, according to the SPC. Nearly 40 structures were destroyed in the Oklahoma City area, the Oklahoma City Fire Department said in a Facebook post.
