There's a reason that it's impossible to buy in and that Bill Hader lives on our street. We stayed at our friend's house until they lost power, then checked into the Beverly Hilton. It was like all of West Los Angeles had descended upon the hotel — it took 40 minutes just to pull into the driveway. On Tuesday afternoon, she and her significant other evacuated to her parents' home in another part of Los Angeles. My close friend Alisa lives up the street, so I called to check on her and her family.

To the Editor:Re “Liberals on Their High Horse About ‘Rich Men,’” by Nicholas Kristof (column, Aug. 31):Thank you, Mr. Kristof, for once again opening eyes with your column about Oliver Anthony’s song “Rich Men North of Richmond.”I will admit to being one of those “liberals” ready to dismiss the song without listening to it. After reading the column I did listen to it, and I recognize it as continuing the tradition of protest songs that many in my generation embraced wholeheartedly in the ’60s, expressing the frustration of the working class in its struggle for the dignity and respect we all crave. It is time that those of us who have had the privilege of higher education and rewarding career paths put ourselves in the shoes of those who have had neither. We need to recognize the resulting widespread anguish and despair as a failing of our society, and embrace our own responsibility to proactively work toward healing these widening cracks in our democracy before it is too late. Barbara WilsonAltadena, Calif. To the Editor:Nicholas Kristof writes, “Liberals are properly attentive to racial injustice but have a blind spot about class, driven in part by unfair stereotypes that members of the white working class are invariably bigots.”

The prize goes up to an estimated $650 million and the wait for a winner goes on as there were no PowerBall jackpot winners in Saturday's draw. The cash option for Monday's draw will be an estimated $328.3 million, Powerball said in a news release, adding that it "ranks as the ninth largest Powerball jackpot on record," and the second largest this year. Three tickets, sold in California, Illinois and Colorado, matched the first five numbers for a prize of $1 million each, Powerball said. A player in Washington also won $754.6 million in February and the following month a player scooped $162.6 million. His winning ticket was sold at Joe's Service Center in Altadena, about 15 miles outside downtown Los Angeles.

The $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot finally found a winner on Tuesday morning, after technical difficulties delayed the drawing that had been scheduled to take place on Monday. The massive prize marked the fifth time in the past five years that a lottery jackpot has crossed the billion-dollar threshold — and this one was a world record. That one was also a Powerball drawing that reached $1.586 billion and was split between three winning tickets. $1.59 billion (Powerball)This Powerball drawing from Jan. 13, 2016, for which three winning tickets were sold, held the record as history's biggest lottery prize for more than six years, until this week's Powerball drawing dropped it down a spot. $1.34 billion (Mega Millions)The first billion-dollar jackpot of 2022 topped $1.3 billion before it found a winner in July.
Los Angeles CNN Business —The owner of Joe’s Service Center in Altadena, California, who came to the United States from Syria in 1980 with $14,000 in his pocket, is now a millionaire after selling the sole winning Powerball lottery ticket. California Lottery officials presented the check to Joe Chahayed and his sons Joe Jr. and Danny on a rainy election day outside of their gas station. Business owner Joe Chahayed smiles as he holds a check with his sons, Joe Chahayed, Jr., left, and Daniel Chahayed, right, outside his service center in Altadena, Calif. Damian Dovarganes/APChahayed said lottery officials were waiting for him before he opened his shop this morning. Chahayed hopes the winner is from the neighborhood, and is glad a portion of the lottery money will go towards California schools. “Somebody is holding on to a very important piece of paper this morning worth $2.04 billion, that’s two billion forty million dollars,” said Carolyn Becker, California Lottery spokesperson.
In fact, lottery winners are more likely to declare bankruptcy within three to five years than the average American, according to 2011 academic study.
