CNN —The Israeli military on Wednesday said that a February strike on Khan Younis in southern Gaza may have led Hamas militants to execute six hostages. Speaking at a press briefing about an investigation into the hostages’ deaths, an IDF official said the Israeli military struck “a terror target” on February 14 in Khan Younis, but did not know that hostages were being held nearby. IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari later raised the possibility of the aftermath of the strike killing the hostages. Hamas said that it had executed them because it believed Israeli soldiers may have been closing in. In the messy patchwork of conflicts raging across the Middle East, one country has been absent from the spotlight: Syria. That he has survived was largely because of the intervention of Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, Iran’s Lebanon-based proxy. In all, the U.N. has documented more than 350,000 deaths but says this is “certainly an undercount.”Today, however, Russia, Iran and Lebanon are distracted and depleted. All of this “puts Assad in a much weaker position.”But “the Syrian regime, in coordination with the Russians and less so the Iranians, will hit them with everything they’ve got,” he added. “Much as I oppose the Assad regime, its atrocities and abuses, what is happening in Aleppo right now is terrifying.

China is closely monitoring the effects of Western sanctions on Russia in order to prepare for a possible invasion of Taiwan, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Alexander Gabuev, the director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, told the Journal that Russia is serving as a "sandbox" for China for how sanctions operate and how they should handle them. AdvertisementEven so, Russia's economy has been heavily impacted by the ongoing conflict and the Western sanctions imposed on it. Advertisement"Essentially, the experience of the last three years substantially reduced the fear of large authoritarian states with respect to Western sanctions, and this is very concerning," he said, adding that China-Russia economic cooperation would make any future Western sanctions against China less effective.

Stacia Alexander was 25 and pregnant when her OB-GYN first recommended a hysterectomy. It was 1996, and an ultrasound had revealed fibroids growing in the walls of her uterus. But she knew what the procedure had done to her mother: After her ovaries and uterus were removed in her 40s, her mother faded into a sad, irritable shadow of herself. So after giving birth, Dr. Alexander opted for surgery to prune back the fibroids. But by the time she was 45, the fibroids were back, and her doctor informed her that she was “too old” for another uterus-sparing surgery.

CNN —Researchers have discovered the residues of psychedelic drugs, bodily fluids and alcohol inside a 2,000-year-old mug, suggesting that ancient Egyptians imbibed hallucinogenic beverages during rituals. “Religion is one of the most fascinating and puzzling aspects of ancient civilizations,” Tanasi said in a statement. Researchers analyzed a 2,000-year-old Bes mug for chemical and DNA traces. Tanasi scanned the Bes mug to conduct a three-dimensonal study of the vessel. “Inebriation played an important ritual role in some ancient Egyptian festivals, especially festivals associated with the flooding of the Nile,” Barrett said.
