New York CNN —It’s easy to dismiss many presidential candidates’ campaign promises as empty, because Congress would need to approve them. Alex Durante, an economist at the Tax Foundation, a right-leaning think tank, told CNN that 100% tariffs would threaten the economy. It’s possible he is floating 100% tariffs as just a threat designed to change the behavior of other countries. ‘No question it’s inflationary’The Trump campaign did not provide an explanation to CNN about how Trump would implement 100% tariffs nor what the trigger would be. He said Trump’s tariff plan, if enacted, would risk setting off a market panic like former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss did in 2022.

Geologic hydrogen — sometimes known as white, gold or natural hydrogen — refers to hydrogen gas that is found in its natural form beneath Earth's surface. Pete Johnson, CEO and co-founder of Koloma, told CNBC that geologic hydrogen is fundamentally an exploration and production business. A primary energy source, such as coal, oil, wind or solar, refers to a natural energy source that has not been altered or converted. It's within this context that momentum has been growing over the potential of geologic hydrogen. Ellis said that just a small percentage of geologic hydrogen recovery might well be enough to supply all the projected demand for 200 years.

“This will mean that NATO countries – the United States and European countries – are at war with Russia,” Putin told reporters on Thursday. US officials have expressed concerns that allowing Ukraine to strike deep inside Russia could escalate the conflict and cause Russia to further accuse the US of being part of the war. Blinken said he discussed the restrictions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and would report back to President Biden. On Tuesday, the bipartisan congressional Ukraine caucus called on Biden to allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with the long-range weapons. New York CNN —The Republican nominee for president went on live TV and presented an unhinged, debunked Facebook rumor as fact. Scrolling on Facebook or X, it’s hard not to see some of that chaos creeping into the mainstream. Just a few weeks ago, the former president posted an AI-generated image on his Truth Social platform that suggested Taylor Swift had endorsed him. Of course, it was a fake image — the same kind of obvious AI slop that has overrun Facebook and X. Either Trump didn’t know the image was fake, or he didn’t mind lying to his followers and perpetuating the fake endorsement.

Deutsche Bank on what stocks to buy if Kamala Harris wins

Deutsche Bank has some ideas on which stocks investors will want to hold if Kamala Harris comes out on top in November's presidential election. Following Tuesday night's debate , analyst Nicole DeBlase sent a note to clients looking at the themes and individual companies that stand to benefit from another four years of Democrats in the White House. Here's what she likes in this scenario: Residential construction suppliers, which can benefit from more housing support: Lennox International , Stanley Black & Decker , Carrier Global , Trane Technologies and Pentair Stocks tied to a "more cooperative and less protectionist world order": Stanley Black & Decker, Zurn Elkay Water Solutions Electric product and system makers, assuming an intact Inflation Reduction Act: Eaton , Hubbell , Vertiv HVAC stocks, for the same reason: Lennox International, Carrier Global, Trane Technologies, Johnson Controls International Regulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl contaminants, known as PFAS: Xylem "From a high level, [a] Harris victory would likely bring more support for lower-income households (via housing subsidies/tax breaks) but higher corporate tax rates, less overt protectionism and legislation that limits/reverses climate change," DeBlase told clients. The election is almost universally expected to be close. One measure of economic "misery " appears to favor Harris, using data analysis from research firm Strategas — but only by a narrow margin.

The Japanese star is now just two away from equaling the Dodgers franchise record of 49 homers hit by Shawn Green in 2001. “For him to hit the ball 118 mph at that degree, it’s usually a double,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, according to MLB.com. But the Dodgers roared back in the bottom of the first with five runs, immediately turning the game on its head. After two outs, Tommy Edman continued his impressive form with a two-run homer to left field to give the Dodgers the lead. Ohtani now has 16 regular-season games remaining to find the required three home runs and two stolen bases, starting on Friday at the Braves.

Electric truck maker Rivian's $5 billion deal with Volkswagen Group nets Rivian some much-needed cash. But it also gives Volkswagen a path to a future in the auto industry it has struggled to gain on its own. As of the second quarter, Rivian was losing somewhere around $1.5 billion per quarter — or about $30,000 to $43,000 on every truck it sold in the past five quarters. Financial strain and instability in the EV market and the broader economy have led to multiple rounds of layoffs at Rivian. But there are still challenges: Automotive history is littered with failed partnerships, Rivian and VW are still competitors, and the EV transition has proven rockier than many forecasters had expected.

However, Hidalgo announced in the French media Aug. 31 that the rings would stay on the Eiffel Tower, until at least 2028 and perhaps beyond. Trump responded with his own attack about Harris' rallies, but his demeanor also took a noticeable turn for the remainder of the debate. And while the two candidates basically don't agree on anything, Harris took one page out of Trump's book. The vice president had some noticeable facial expressions during the debate , something the former president has been known for. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesA landmark ruling from the European Union's top court means Ireland will receive 13 billion euros ($14.4 billion) in unpaid taxes from Apple — a windfall that Dublin had spent several years fighting to avoid. In a decision the European Court of Justice (ECJ) said was final, the EU's top court on Tuesday ruled that Apple must pay Ireland billions of euros in back taxes. For years, Ireland consistently argued that the iPhone maker should not have to repay unpaid taxes to the country. The decision comes at a time when Ireland is in the unusual position of running a budget surplus of several billion euros, partly due to the strength of corporate tax receipts.
