Amazon's Rufus AI chatbot answers questions about products and recommends items. The new chatbot illustrates Amazon's complicated relationship with copycat items: The company forbids selling counterfeit or illegally replicated products on its platform. Amazon has warehouses full of products that don't have brand names that people would immediately recognize but might be similar to those brands' products. In theory, Rufus should be able to help — AI should help people compare similar items and answer questions about them. For now, Amazon's Rufus probably won't.

(photo by John Keeble/Getty Images)British sportswear retailer JD Sports Fashion is confident it will meet annual profit forecasts after its multi-brand strategy boosted half-year results even as Nike, which accounts for 45% of its sales, struggles. Nike on Tuesday posted disappointing quarterly sales growth and warned its holiday season would likely be filled with discounts. Worries over Nike hit shares in JD Sports in early deals. In the 26 weeks to Aug. 3, JD posted adjusted pretax profit of 405.6 million pounds ($538.8 million), beating analysts' expectations of 384 million pounds. For the full financial year, JD reiterated its guidance for profit of between 955 million pounds and 1.035 billion pounds, up from 917.2 million pounds in 2023/24.

The Northeast is the ancestral home of footwear manufacturing in the US, where New Balance still assembles more than 4 million pairs of sneakers each year. But that could soon change with a plan for a $125 million development campus called Made in Old Town. However, the trend is ruffling more than a few feathers, due to the airport security line being one of the top places in the world where it’s imperative to avoid dilly-dallying. Let’s also not forget that with all those shoes passing through security trays, you may as well be laying your items straight out on the floor. In 2018, a European study found that airport trays are the least hygienic part of the airport, carrying more germs than toilets. So while hand sanitizer doesn’t typically feature in these airport tray photos and videos, it should probably play a key part in the aftercare. “As long as the staged glamor photos are not causing delays or issues with other passengers in the checkpoint, there are no issues.

The supermodel Bella Hadid said on Monday that she was “shocked” by the “lack of sensitivity” that went into an Adidas ad campaign that she starred in, inspired by the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. The sportswear brand’s ad was met with swift backlash from people online and pro-Israel groups when it came out this month. Ms. Hadid, who modeled the sneaker in the ad, is of Palestinian descent and became a focal point of the scrutiny. Adidas apologized in a statement on July 19, saying that it had made an “unintentional mistake,” and pulled the ad. “In advance of the campaign’s release, I had no knowledge of the historical connection to the atrocious events in 1972.”

Model Bella Hadid issued a statement after starring in a controversial Adidas campaign that the sportswear company said had an "unintentional" connection to a bloody terrorist attack. The ad campaign for Adidas' new retro trainers, called the SL72s, was a nod to the 1972 Munich Olympics. Released earlier in July, the advertisement featured Hadid holding a bouquet of flowers while wearing the shoes, which originally debuted in 1972 for the Munich Olympics. Hadid said she was not aware of the connection to the historical events of the 1972 Munich Olympics, and that she would not have taken part in the campaign had she known. "Adidas should have known and I should have done more research so that I too would have known and understood, and spoken up."
