The average age of homebuyers in the U.S. has risen by six years since July 2023 — another sign that younger Americans are being priced out of the market due to escalating ownership costs. The average age of homebuyers is now 56, up from 49 in 2023, according to the National Association of Realtors' annual state-of-the-market report released Monday. That's a historic high, up from an average age in the low-to-mid 40s in the early 2010s. The median age of first-time buyers also rose from 35 to 38, while the share of first-timers dropped from 32% to 24% of all buyers for the year ending July 2024. The median U.S. home price is now $435,000, per NAR — up 39% since 2020 — while the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate has more than doubled to over 6% in that time.

Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese said he would cut student debt by 20% next year. The debt relief is designed to promote "intergenerational equity," Albanese told Australian Broadcasting Radio on Monday, according to Bloomberg. Biden's Education Department is continuing to work on debt relief proposals; if finalized, the latest one would benefit 8 million borrowers facing hardship.

Arizona law enforcement alleges that an 18-year-old killed his mother and tried to report her as kidnapped to cover up her death. Less than 10 minutes later, the son of Mary Collier, 38, called 911 to report her supposed kidnapping. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies quickly confirmed that the body was Collier’s. Her son who made the call was identified as the suspect in her death, the sheriff’s office said. Lt. Neither former President Trump nor VP Kamala Harris would be able to act on them imminently. Despite its inability to provide broad cancellation, Biden's Education Department has issued targeted relief that has given nearly 5 million borrowers debt cancellation to date. Constance, 65, has nearly $200,000 in student debt, an amount that's ballooned since she graduated from law school in 1994. "I would expect continued improvements and limited expansions of debt relief where legally possible under a Harris-Walz administration," Partridge said. Regardless of who wins the election, legal challenges to debt relief will keep borrowers in limbo.

That changed Friday, when tens of thousands of DACA recipients became able to sign up for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act for the first time. Bortolleto said she plans to sign up government-funded health insurance as early as Friday. The limited options, she said, mean many DACA recipients can’t get quality health insurance, resulting in high uninsured rates. The lawsuit says that expanding coverage to DACA recipients will create additional “resource burdens” and harm to taxpayers. She and other DACA recipients have asked the court to allow them to join the Kansas case, siding with the defense.

Currently, the jobless in North Carolina can only receive up to 12 weeks of state unemployment benefits, among the skimpiest in the nation. (Applicants must first exhaust their state unemployment benefits.) Plus, disaster jobless benefits are available to many types of workers who don’t qualify for state unemployment insurance, such as gig workers, farmers and the self-employed. Still, it can be difficult for the newly jobless to secure either state or disaster unemployment benefits, particularly those whose homes and businesses have been heavily damaged or destroyed by storms.
