Investors should brace themselves for another big move next year, according to an analysis of historical data from Bank of America. The S & P 500 is up 24.7% in 2024 and on track for its second straight year with a gain of more than 20%. After rising 31% and 38% in 1927 and 1928, respectively, the S & P 500 lost 12% in 1929 and another 28% in 1930, Hartnett said. The last time the S & P 500 posted back-to-back 20% annual gains was in the 1990s, soaring 34% in 1995 and 20% in 1996. Hartnett noted that the "secret sauce" for the S & P 500 to avoid some of the sharp reversals seen before is a decline in Treasury yields.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City's casinos saw their operating profits decline by nearly 14% in the third quarter of this year, figures released Friday by New Jersey gambling regulators show. The state Division of Gaming Enforcement issued statistics showing that the nine casinos had a collective gross operating profit of $236.5 million in the third quarter. “Consumer demand may have been an issue for Atlantic City’s casino operators in summer 2024,” said Jane Bokunewicz, director of the Lloyd Levenson Institute at Stockton University, which studies the Atlantic City gambling industry. Revenue from things other than gambling also underperformed in the third quarter at $511.6 million, down 5% from a year earlier. Among internet-only entities, Caesars Interactive NJ earned $4.8 million, down 7.8%, and Resorts Digital, the former online arm of Resorts casino, earned $1.5 million, down 4.8%.

The use of what Vladimir Putin said was a ballistic missile with multiple warheads in offensive combat is a clear departure from decades of the Cold War doctrine of deterrence. A missing Kansas woman who disappeared this year and was found in a freezer buried in a cow pasture in the Oklahoma panhandle was killed in a stabbing attack that left her with dozens of wounds, according to a medical examiner’s report. Veronica Butler, 27, died from sharp force trauma and had 30 wounds, 10 of which were consistent with her trying to defend herself, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Oklahoma said in its report. About 167,000 pounds of both fresh and frozen ground beef products have been recalled over possible E. coli contamination, according to the the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Fifteen people were reported sick as of Nov. 20, with symptoms beginning between Nov. 2 and Nov. 10. That same day, the FSIS said in a press release, the Minnesota Department tested a ground beef sample from Wolverine Packing Co. and found that it contained a strain of harmful bacteria called E. coli O157:H7. The FSIS provided a list of all affected products and images of every product label that is part of the recall. E. coli O157:H7 is the same strain of bacteria linked to onions in some McDonald’s Quarter Pounders in October.

Colin Gray, the father of alleged Georgia school shooter Colt Gray, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges related to the mass shooting in September at Apalachee High School that killed four people. Attorneys for Colin Gray appeared in court Thursday morning and entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. Barrow County District Attorney Brad Smith said Colin Gray’s charges marked the first time in state history that a parent of a suspect in a school shooting was charged. His son was indicted separately on 55 counts, including four counts of malice murder and four counts of felony murder, in the Sept. 4 shooting at the Winder high school. A volcano near Iceland’s capital erupted late on Wednesday for the seventh time in a year, spewing fountains of lava and smoke, the country’s meteorological office said, but there were no disruptions to air traffic or infrastructure. The eruption started with little warning at 11:14 p.m. local time Wednesday and created a fissure just under two miles long. The activity is estimated to be considerably smaller than the previous eruption in August, Iceland’s meteorological office that monitors seismic activity said. SYDNEY, Australia — Australia’s center-left government on Thursday introduced a bill in Parliament that aims to ban social media for children under 16 and proposed fines of up to $32 million for social media platforms for systemic breaches. Australia plans to trial an age-verification system that may include biometrics or government identification to enforce a social media age cut-off, some of the toughest controls imposed by any country to date. France last year proposed a ban on social media for those under 15, but users were able to avoid the ban with parental consent. The law would force social media platforms, and not parents or young people, to take reasonable steps to ensure the age-verification protections are in place. “Social media has a social responsibility ... that’s why we are making big changes to hold platforms to account for user safety,” she said.
