New York CNN —Lyft and Uber threatened to stop doing business in Minneapolis after the city council adopted a new rule Thursday that would set a minimum wage for rideshare drivers. In a 7-5 vote, the Minneapolis City Council passed an ordinance that includes a number of rideshare worker protections, including a minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers. Minneapolis is debating the minimum wage as gig workers across the country are advocating for fair wages and job benefits. Uber sent an email to its drivers on Monday, urging them to contact the Mayor and City Council to ask them to oppose the move. Uber said its drivers sent over 700 emails on Thursday, but did not specify what was in those emails.

CNN —Smoke from more than 1,000 wildfires burning across Canada has wafted over the northern US, bringing poor air quality and pollution that threaten residents’ health to northern US cities including Chicago, Illinois, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The bulk of the country’s wildfires are burning in British Columbia, where more than 460 fires are ongoing, the agency reports. The EPA in Illinois has declared an “Air Pollution Action Day” through Tuesday due to the “persistent” wildfire smoke causing elevated air pollution in the region. Wildfire smoke is packed with tiny pollutants – known as particulate matter – that can infiltrate the lungs and blood stream if inhaled. Hundreds of British Columbia’s fires have been ignited by lightning strikes from thunderstorms, according to the British Columbia Wildfire Service.

Washington, DC CNN —Florida is America’s inflation hotspot, thanks to a persistent problem with sky-high housing costs. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area has the highest inflation rate of metro areas with more than 2.5 million residents, with a 9% inflation rate for the 12 months ended in April. Urban Hawaii had the second lowest inflation rate at 2% — mirroring the Federal Reserve’s target for its preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures index. A vexing inflation problem in the Sunshine StateIn Florida, the state’s growing population has been pushing up inflation — particularly via housing costs. Even though the Twin Cities’ inflation rate is currently the lowest among major cities, it might not feel that way to residents, Schipper said.

Why cities want to ban new drive-thrus
  + stars: | 2023-06-24 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Magnets of traffic and congestion, drive-thrus discourage walking, public transit use and visits to neighboring businesses. A host of cities and regions want the sprawl to stop: Atlanta lawmakers will vote this summer on whether to ban new drive-thrus in the popular Beltline area. Minneapolis; Fair Haven, New Jersey; Creve Coeur, Missouri; Orchard Park, New York, and other cities have banned new drive-thrus in recent years. Experts say pedestrian safety can be improved by tightly managing access along arterial roads and locating drive-thrus away from them. Cities push backAtlanta City Councilman Jason Dozier proposed a bill this year to block new drive-thrus around the Atlanta Beltline, a pedestrian trail along a 22-mile railroad corridor.

“It’s kind of like the old saying, when everything’s a priority, nothing’s a priority,” said Jason Johnson, who was a deputy police chief in Baltimore overseeing compliance with the city’s consent decree. Even so, believers point out that consent decrees may be far cheaper than unconstitutional policing. “What we’re talking about is broad institutional reform,” said David Douglass, the deputy monitor of the New Orleans consent decree and founder of a nonprofit group called Effective Law Enforcement for All, which helps communities develop voluntary reforms. In Baltimore, Michael Harrison, who was brought in as commissioner because of his success in implementing New Orleans’s police overhaul, just resigned, but the consent decree remains. Experience running a department with a consent decree has become a plum line on a chief’s résumé.

SummarySummary Companies Futures up: Dow 0.22%, S&P 0.31%, Nasdaq 0.50%March 1 (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures rose on Wednesday, putting Wall Street on course for a positive start to March, as strong Chinese manufacturing data outweighed concerns that the Federal Reserve's policies will remain restrictive for longer. Traders are pricing in expectations that the Fed will raise rates in coming months to a 5.25%-5.50% range, from the current 4.50%-4.75% range. That's slightly higher than where Fed policymakers in December signaled they would need to take the policy rate. ET, Dow e-minis were up 71 points, or 0.22%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 12.25 points, or 0.31%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 60 points, or 0.5%. MUMBAI, Feb 9 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee is expected to decline against the U.S. dollar on Thursday, weighed by hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials and higher oil prices. The non-deliverable forwards indicated the rupee would open around 82.60-82.62 per dollar, compared with the 82.4925 closing in the previous session. Fed officials on Wednesday said more interest rate rises are on the cards in the central bank's efforts to bring down inflation. Moving to a rate of between 5.00% and 5.25% "seems a very reasonable view," New York Fed President John Williams said. Fed fund futures are pricing in rate cuts of about 30 to 35 basis points after peaking at around 5.12% in July.
AI's been in use for years, of course, helping companies improve products, efficiency and their business models. Media conglomerate Comcast (the parent of CNBC) is harnessing AI to improve expenses and innovate within high-speed broadband, while Stanley Black & Decker mentioned it's using AI to help customers better measure the hardening of concrete. Here's how some of the biggest companies outside of technology are utilizing AI to improve their businesses: Healthcare companies bet on AI One of the biggest beneficiaries of the latest AI trends might be healthcare companies. Some health companies also view machine learning and AI as tools to assist in areas with doctor shortages or fewer resources. Minneapolis-based utility Xcel Energy said it's using AI technology to improve efficiency at its plants and move from "reactive to proactive maintenance," said Brian Van Abel, Xcel's chief financial officer.

The Federal Reserve's December minutes confirmed interest rates won't be cut in 2023. It noted that as long as inflation is well above 2%, continued interest rate hikes will be necessary. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve released its minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) December meeting, when it announced it would be raising interest rates by 50 basis points. "No participants anticipated that it would be appropriate to begin reducing the federal funds rate target in 2023," the minutes said. This means that while the Fed might lower the pace at which it raises interest rates throughout the year, taking on loans to buy a house, car, or mortgage will keep getting more expensive.
In addition to recession-planning, some companies are expanding their credit lines in response to higher input and inventory costs, corporate bankers said. Term loans are also funded at the outset, unlike credit lines. Photo: Xcel EnergyThe company increased its revolving credit lines primarily because it is expanding and also confronting higher commodity costs, Mr. Johnson said. Xcel doesn’t typically allow its commercial-paper balances to exceed 40% of its total borrowing capacity under its revolving credit lines, Mr. Johnson said. Bombardier in the third quarter closed on a new $300 million, five-year revolving credit facility.

Defining that point, or at least its parameters, will be the subject of intense discussion at this week's Federal Open Market Committee meeting. Reuters GraphicsAnd during that time, Fed policymakers, with the notable exception of Powell, have offered a range of views on where they stand on a possible slowdown or even pause to rate hikes. Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, for instance, said she'll look for signs that inflation is moving down before she would want to reduce the pace of rate hikes. Reuters Graphics'NEED TO BE CONVINCED'Bets in futures markets weigh heavily in favor of a slowdown in rate hikes starting in December, but ultimately a top Fed policy rate of 4.75%-5.00%, slightly higher than policymakers themselves have flagged, by early next year. Fed policymakers, Reinhart said, are also well aware that monetary policy typically goes too far.
US treasury yields touched their highest levels since the Great Recession on Thursday. The rise is fueled by expectations of big rate hikes at the next two Fed policy meetings. Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari warned the terminal fed funds rate could be even higher than expected this week, putting investors on edge. Fed officials will convene on November 1-2 at the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting, where they are widely expected to issue another 75 basis point rate hike. That would be the fourth jumbo increase this year, and would bring the fed funds rate to a range of 3.75%-4.00%.

S & P 500 earnings are expected to grow by 3.6% for the third quarter, based on actual reports and estimates, according to Refinitiv.
