The jobless rate for 16-to-24-year olds in China, excluding students, fell to 17.6% in September from 18.8% a month prior, official data showed on Tuesday, offering officials relief after youth unemployment hit fresh highs for two straight months. Youth unemployment hit a record high of 21.3% in June last year, prompting China to halt publication of the closely watched benchmark until that change was made. But a separate official survey on factory owners' confidence for September showed that firms continued to hold off on hiring last month. The rate last month for 25-to-29-year olds was 6.7%, and also excluded college students, and 3.9% for people between 30 and 59 years of age.

Oil prices ended down 7% last week and are lower this year-to-date, despite Middle East tensions. Oil prices have been depressed this year because China — the world's largest oil importer — is in a prolonged economic downturn. Last year, they each accounted for 11% of the world's oil supply. This means that Saudi Arabia is looking to corner a larger market share instead of targeting higher profit margins by restricting output. Advertisement"But the problem is when oil prices spike, it sends oil companies searching for temporarily profitable oil," he added, referring to the US shale boom as the most recent example.

First openly transgender lawyer to argue at Supreme Court

An American Civil Liberties Union lawyer will make history in December as the first openly transgender attorney to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, opposing Tennessee’s Republican-backed law banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that the argument time for the ban’s challengers be divided between the Justice Department and attorneys representing the original plaintiffs who sued the state. Several plaintiffs — including two transgender boys, a transgender girl and their parents — sued in Tennessee to defend the treatments they have said improved their happiness and wellbeing. The Supreme Court has confronted several cases in the past decade implicating LGBTQ rights. In 2020, it ruled that a landmark federal law forbidding workplace discrimination protects gay and transgender employees.

Elon Musk’s daily $1 million lottery for registered swing state voters who sign his super PAC’s petition falls into a legal gray area and could potentially violate election law, three experts told NBC News. Paying someone to vote or to register to vote is explicitly illegal under federal law. “This is at best very questionable legally,” said Michael Morse, an assistant professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. But none of the experts who spoke with NBC News believed law enforcement is likely to stop the lottery or fine Musk before the election. “You can only register to vote in Pennsylvania until today.

No matter the poll, voters consistently say that the cost of living is their top concern, usually followed by threats to democracy, immigration and the economy in general. Female voters are backing Harris by 14 points, while Trump is winning men by 16 points, according to the latest NBC News poll. The October NBC News poll showed Harris leading Trump by 5 points, 45% to 40%, on who better represents change. Yet he isn’t all that impressed with Obama, the nation’s first Black president, nor Harris, who would be the second. “He’s only gaining support with Black men.”Democrats have been unnerved by recent polls that show Harris’ numbers sagging among Black voters, particularly young Black men.

Planning the local stops now can be as labor-intensive for campaign staff as putting on a full event, the sources said. The limitations on local stops is the new reality as both candidates race across battleground states in what polling has shown to be a contest that hangs within the margin of error. “In order to maintain operational security, the U.S. Secret Service does not discuss the specific means and methods used to conduct its protective operations. Elon Musk, his car company Tesla and Warner Brothers Discovery were sued Monday over their alleged artificial intelligence-fueled copyright infringement of images from the film “Blade Runner 2049” to promote Tesla’s robotaxi concept. The Cybercab is Tesla’s concept of a “dedicated robotaxi” that the company says it wants to produce by 2027, and sell for under $30,000. “Alcon refused all permissions “and adamantly objected to Defendants suggesting any affiliation between BR2049 and Tesla, Musk or any Musk-owned company,” the civil suit in Los Angeles federal court alleges. Musk has promised Tesla shareholders a robotaxi for more than a decade. However, Tesla has never produced a vehicle that is safe to use without a human ready to steer or brake at any time.

New York Magazine announced Monday that it is parting ways with star political reporter Olivia Nuzzi, whose previously undisclosed personal relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. led to an investigation into her work during the 2024 campaign. This investigation, conducted by the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine, “reached the same conclusion as the magazine’s initial internal review of her published work, finding no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias,” New York Magazine said in a statement on its website. Kennedy’s spokesperson, meanwhile, wrote that the former presidential candidate “only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece.”Nuzzi wrote a profile on Kennedy in November 2023, headlined: “The Mind-Bending Politics of RFK Jr.’s Spoiler Campaign.” Its subheading read: “He’s a conservative. And he could turn the presidential race upside down.”Kennedy dropped out of the race in late August and endorsed Donald Trump. He is the son of the late Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and is married to “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star actress Cheryl Hines.

Since an 0-2 start Baltimore has had the best month of any team in the NFL. On Monday, they face a Tampa Bay team that has shown last season’s playoff berth was no fluke. Baltimore’s 35.5 points per game over its last three games is third-best in the NFL behind only Detroit and, yes, Tampa Bay (38.0). Henry is averaging 5.4 yards per carry on the road, where quarterback Lamar Jackson is averaging 6.2 yards, too. It sets up a strength vs. strength matchup, given the Buccaneers’ defense ranks among the league leaders in stopping the run by allowing 113 rushing yards per game.

The parent company of TikTok says it has dismissed an intern that it found to have "maliciously interfered" with its artificial intelligence technology effort. In a statement in Chinese released Monday, the parent company, ByteDance, said the intern in question had committed a "serious violation" against its commercial technology team's "research project." In particular, the intern's actions affected ByteDance's AI training program, the company said. In the AI world, companies attempt to program an AI application by "training" it on vast amounts of data to recognize patterns, understand context, and make decisions — in other words, "learn." It is not clear what aspect of the AI model the intern is accused of interfering with.

"I know all the headlines will be 'Reeve cries foul' ... bring it on, because this s--- was stolen from us," Reeve said. She criticized officials for failing to call multiple fouls to the detriment of the Liberty team. "If we're getting hit, that's a foul," Brondello said. A highly anticipated legislative hearing began Monday but without its key witness: a Texas inmate whose execution for his daughter's "shaken baby" death was narrowly averted last week. The high court, however, said Sunday it would not rule on the manner in which Roberson must testify. Roberson, 57, has maintained his innocence in the 2002 death of his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki, based on "shaken baby syndrome." But hours later, Roberson said, he woke up and realized Nikki was not breathing and her lips looked blue. Wharton, the lead detective in the case, has also voiced his support for Roberson, telling House committee members at a hearing last week: "This is an innocent man, beyond question."
