New York City will buy up millions of dollars of medical debt and erase it in a program that officials hope will ultimately help as many as 500,000 New Yorkers. Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday that the city would invest $18 million in a partnership with a nonprofit organization that buys up unpaid medical debt from hospitals at steep discounts and then erases it. Hospital systems and commercial debt buyers are often willing to sell medical debt at steep discounts, and the $18 million could wipe out over $2 billion in unpaid medical bills, city officials said. “Up to half a million New Yorkers will see their medical debt wiped thanks to this life-changing program — the largest municipal initiative of its kind in the country,” Mayor Adams said. Hospital visitors will also be able to shop at JWO-enabled stores using credit cards and debit cards, as well as mobile wallets. Amazon's JWO technology allows shoppers to enter a store by scanning an app and exit without needing to stand in a checkout line. Cameras and sensors track what items shoppers select and charge them when they leave. It also sells the technology to third-party retailers in airports, college campuses, stadiums and theme parks, among other venues.

These hospitals proliferated after federal tax rules about 50 years ago made it easier to qualify for tax exemptions. So why are nonprofit hospitals behaving in ways that seem to focus more on dollars than patients? This looming likelihood, plus financial challenges from the pandemic, a severe worker shortage, rising inflation and stock market volatility have put nonprofit hospitals in survival mode. And you would think that focusing on the mission would be the top priority, though boards aren’t doing this consistently.

Jerusalem CNN —An Israeli strike targeting a Hamas commander in the densely populated Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza has left catastrophic damage and killed a large number of people, according to eyewitnesses and medics in the enclave. The IDF also said “numerous other Hamas terrorists” were hit in the strike, and claimed the Central Jabalya Battalion had taken control of civilian buildings. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the strike as a “massacre,” referencing “chilling documented scenes” of children and women. Jordan’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the strike, saying it held Israel responsible for “this dangerous development,” in a statement released on X, previously known as Twitter. And Egypt accused Israel of breaking international law with what it said was the “inhuman” targeting of a residential area.
