WASHINGTON (AP) — Supporters of Israel rallied by the thousands on the National Mall under heavy security Tuesday, voicing solidarity in the fight against Hamas and crying “never again." The Homeland Security Department designated the march a “level 1” security event, the highest classification in its system and one usually used for the Super Bowl and other major events, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. The designation means the event required substantial law enforcement assistance from federal agencies, the officials said. The officials were not authorized to discuss details of the law enforcement bulletin publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Many of the demonstrators at the “March for Israel” wore Israeli flags wrapped around their shoulders, flowing behind them, or held small Israeli flags in their hands.

REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 6 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden's administration has informed the U.S. Congress that it is planning a $320 million transfer of precision bombs for Israel, a source familiar with the plan said on Monday. The Wall Street Journal first reported that the administration sent formal notification on Oct. 31 to congressional leaders of the planned transfer of Spice Family Gliding Bomb Assemblies, a type of precision guided weapon fired by warplanes. Citing correspondence it viewed, the Journal said weapons manufacturer Rafael USA would transfer the bombs to its Israeli parent company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems for use by the Israeli defense ministry. Earlier on Monday, the United Nations said Gaza is becoming a "graveyard for children," amplifying demands for a ceasefire as Palestinian health authorities said the death toll from Israel strikes had exceeded 10,000. Some Republican contenders for their party's 2024 presidential nomination have turned to a blunt policy proposal to tamp down on crime: killing criminals. Crime, meanwhile, is a greater concern for voters than it has been in previous elections, even as crime trends are mixed. The former president has reiterated previous calls for drug dealers to receive the death penalty, despite legal scholars questioning its constitutionality. For instance, the U.S. Supreme Court holds that the application of the death penalty for crimes that do not result in the death of the victim is generally unconstitutional. In 2008, the court left open the possibility of the death penalty for "drug kingpin activity," though it has never been applied.

The U.N. Brokered a Deal to Bring Aid Into Gaza
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The U.N. has brokered an agreement that lays the groundwork for humanitarian aid to enter Gaza from Egypt, officials said. Hopes are high that aid trucks will be able to cross into Gaza tomorrow, however details of how and when the desperately needed food and medicine will be delivered have yet to be disclosed. Under the agreement, the U.N. flag would be raised at the Rafah crossing along Gaza’s border with Egypt to protect against attacks, and international observers would inspect aid trucks before they entered the territory to ensure they are not carrying weapons. International pressure to secure an aid route has been growing, and previous reports of imminent agreements to ease the backup at Gaza’s border with Egypt — both for people and aid — have failed to materialize. Nearly half the population has been displaced.

On one side of the border crossing between Egypt and Gaza sit more than 100 trucks packed with desperately needed food, water and medical supplies. On the other wait more than 2 million Gazans now scraping by on dwindling stocks of basic human necessities. Officials and aid workers on Thursday were hammering out the logistics of opening the gates, saying that a U.N.-led deal had laid the groundwork to allow trucks carrying humanitarian aid to enter Gaza from Egypt, offering the renewed promise of relief to the besieged enclave. Aid organizations were told that the crossing would open on Friday morning, according to an aid official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The deal, officials said, includes the U.N. flag being raised at the crossing and international observers inspecting aid trucks before they enter Gaza.

On Monday, LA28 organisers formally asked that flag football for both the men's and women's competitions as well as four other sports be added to the event. It would mark the Olympic debut for flag football, a game that looks similar to tackle football, with passing and receiving, but requires little protective equipment, with play stopping when a defender pulls a cloth flag from the waist of an opponent. "But I will tell you that through this process a number of great young stars of the league have said how great it would be to represent their country and play flag." O'Reilly said one appeal of flag football is that it is low cost and that almost anyone can play it. "The Olympics in LA would be a tremendous boost to flag football around the world and in this country."

Some Palestinians have protested against Israel's entry into the program, saying Israel for decades has discriminated against Arab Americans and harassed them at its borders. They also must treat all U.S. travelers equally, so Israel must allow free passage for Palestinian Americans at Ben Gurion airport. In a pilot period since July 20, Israel has eased access for Palestinian Americans through its borders and the Israeli-occupied West Bank. According to Israel's Interior Ministry, more than 130,000 Americans entered Israel since the pilot began, including 6,070 Palestinian Americans. Between 45,000 and 60,000 Palestinian Americans live in the West Bank, a U.S. official estimated.

Elliott, which holds a 10% stake in the tire company, had also pushed Goodyear for an operational review and sale of its stores. The Ohio-based firm forecast total pre-tax charges of between $210 million and $230 million by 2025 due to the restructuring. Arm's stock market launch is expected to bring back to life a lackluster IPO market, which has over the last year seen several high-profile startups postpone their listing plans due to market volatility. Arm said that more than 50% of its royalty revenue for the most recent fiscal year came from smartphones and consumer electronics. The company, whose chip technology powers most smartphones including iPhones, did not reveal the number of shares it is planning to sell and the valuation it will seek. Arm makes money from upfront licensing fees for technology and then a royalty paid on each chip sold by Arm's customers. Arm's chip designs dominate the smartphone industry, but they are also used in laptops made by Apple (AAPL.O) and some Windows machines.
