San Francisco’s long relationship with X is nearly over — and city officials are far from heartbroken. But city officials are not lamenting the exit. X bears little resemblance to the company that San Francisco wooed with a tax break more than a decade ago, when it was Twitter, to help anchor a budding tech hub in a downtrodden neighborhood near City Hall known as Mid-Market. The pandemic, and Mr. Musk’s 2022 acquisition of the company and subsequent gutting of its work force, reduced the headquarters to a ghost town. “I share the perspective that most San Franciscans have, which is good riddance,” said City Attorney David Chiu, who as a member of the city’s Board of Supervisors backed the tax break that lured Twitter to Mid-Market in 2012.

Tulsa Creates Commission on Reparations for Race Massacre
  + stars: | 2024-08-03 | by ( Kate Selig | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
City officials, historians and the courts acknowledge that the massacre has led to generations of racial inequity in Tulsa. Calls for reparations in Tulsa are longstanding and have resulted in apologies, a scholarship program and other actions, but not direct financial redress. The last two known survivors of the massacre, now centenarians, have pursued reparations through the courts, but the Oklahoma Supreme Court dismissed their case in June. Two reports — one from a commission created by the State Legislature in 2001 and one by a group of Tulsa residents in 2023 — recommended reparations, including financial compensation. The commission announced Thursday, named the Beyond Apology Commission, follows the 2023 report’s calls for the city to create a group to examine and carry out a reparations program.

More specifically, they're taking aim at a widespread rule that requires almost every new apartment building in the US to include at least two separate stairwells. This part of local codes, they say, is an outdated safety measure that really just makes apartment units smaller, more expensive, and darker (yes, darker). City planners there sometimes call these single-stair buildings "Seattle Specials" — they simply wouldn't be possible in pretty much any other city. Almost all of Europe, as well as Asia, Mexico and South America, allows single-stair buildings of six stories or higher. Germany allows single-stair buildings to stretch to about 20 stories, while Switzerland has no such limit.

A 19-year-old man, Thuong Oo, stood in the middle of the group, shouting into a megaphone. The police had killed Mr. Oo’s 13-year-old brother, Nyah Mway, two days earlier and he was angry. Late on June 28, an officer shot Nyah after the boy had been seen with what turned out to be a pellet gun and was tackled to the ground. “I went to the hospital and they said they had a shootout with my brother,” Mr. Oo told the crowd. “But I watched the video and it said different things, so it doesn’t make any sense.”Many of those encircling Mr. Oo were members of the Karen, a refugee ethnic group from Myanmar, and almost all them were young.

The French government has put thousands of homeless immigrants on buses and sent them out of Paris ahead of the Olympics. The immigrants said they were promised housing elsewhere, only to end up living on unfamiliar streets far from home or flagged for deportation. President Emmanuel Macron of France has promised that the Olympic Games will showcase the country’s grandeur. But the Olympic Village was built in one of Paris’s poorest suburbs, where thousands of people live in street encampments, shelters or abandoned buildings. City officials encourage them to board buses to cities like Lyon or Marseille.

New York CNN —New York City officials have agreed to restore more than $111 million in funding to libraries and cultural institutions, the City Council announced Thursday. “We are proud to announce a full restoration of funds to both our libraries and cultural institutions in the upcoming budget,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a statement Thursday. More than 174,000 people sent letters to City Hall in support of the “No Cuts to Libraries!” campaign since the cuts were announced in November. “This funding will allow us to resume seven-day service, a priority for many New Yorkers,” the libraries said in a statement shared with CNN. “We are running a library system today on a pre-pandemic funding level that has not kept pace with inflation,” Linda Johnson, president and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library said at the time.

Since May 2022, homeownership costs have grown twice as fast as incomes, putting the dream of owning property out of reach for many Americans. During that time, median mortgage payments rose from $2,319 to $2,835, per data provided by Redfin. To get a better sense of how rising prices have affected different markets, Redfin compared mortgage payments for 50 of the largest U.S. cities in May 2022 with May 2024. The city has a rich cultural history and is near Boston and New York, making it a popular market for second homes. Monthly payments increased in places like Ohio and Wisconsin, but are still well below the 2024 national median of $2,835.

Doing business in Hong Kong increasingly comes with a new risk: the political cost of upsetting Beijing. A former Wall Street banker was muzzled for writing a “Hong Kong is dead” column. In all areas of life, Hong Kong is hewing closer to mainland China, blurring distinctions that once cemented the city’s status as mostly free from the politics of Beijing. Legal rulings echo the courts in mainland China. The city’s transformation is being driven by a national security law imposed by Beijing in 2020 and additional legislation passed by Hong Kong lawmakers in March.

Manchester City are the 2023-24 Premier League champions — the first time in 135 years of top-flight football that a club has won the English league title four seasons in a row. At 15:59, the situation was simple: Arsenal needed to win, and required City to drop points against West Ham. After West Ham pulled one back, and Arsenal levelled at Everton, it was extremely nervy at the Etihad until Rodri made it 3-1. After decades of painful decline, Detroit’s population grew in 2023, according to new estimates released on Thursday by the Census Bureau. The increase — to 633,218 from 631,366 residents — was slight, lifting Detroit to slightly below levels of 2021. City leaders have long promised to reverse Detroit’s long decline in residents brought on by the shrinking of the auto industry, flight to the suburbs and municipal bankruptcy. The new census estimates showed similar, moderate population rebounds for many big cities in the Midwest and Northeast after previous pandemic-era declines. In the Midwest, cities of that size grew 0.1 percent in 2023 after declining an average of 0.2 percent the year before.

There is, after all, still the intriguing possibility that the championship is decided on goal difference for just the second time in the Premier League era. So, for example, if Arsenal beat Everton a single goal, City would need to win by four. Such a close finish would be unprecedented in the Premier League era. If City defeat Spurs but then draw with West Ham, and Arsenal win against Everton, then we are back in goal-difference territory again. Following City’s victory over Fulham on Saturday, Arsenal knew they realistically had to win both their games to have a chance at securing their first Premier League title since the 2003-04 season.
