CNN —Less than 10 days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, the state is bracing for another potentially devastating blow from a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm Milton formed in the western Gulf on Saturday morning just hours after it became a tropical depression, the National Hurricane Center said in a special alert. Milton is forecast to strengthen and bring life-threatening impacts to portions of the west coast of Florida next week. Hurricane watches, as well as storm surge watches, will likely be issued for portions of the Florida coast on Sunday – a dangerous storm surge is expected for some areas that were just affected by Helene. There is also an increasing risk of storm surge for the western Florida Peninsula as early as late Tuesday or Wednesday.

Milwaukee and Boston, for example, have municipal intercity bus terminals located next to train stations. WASHINGTON — Protesters in some U.S. cities demonstrated on Tuesday against American military support for Israel as risks have risen of a full-fledged conflict in the Middle East, with anti-war activists demanding an arms embargo against the U.S. ally. The United States has maintained support for its ally during this war despite domestic and international criticism. Fatih Aktas / Anadolu via Getty ImagesIn May, Biden said U.S. support for Israel was “ironclad”, while also calling for an immediate ceasefire. The situation has raised concerns of a widened regional war that could destabilize the Middle East. The phrase "financially comfortable" doesn't have a strict definition. In San Francisco, the net worth you'd need to feel "comfortable" is $1.5 million, according to a survey sample of 750 residents in that city — the highest amount cited among 12 major U.S. cities surveyed. Much of the difference in net worth thresholds between cities is due to shelter costs, especially in cities with severe housing shortages, like San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City. While feeling "financially comfortable" is a subjective term, the survey makes a distinction between that and feeling "wealthy." For cities, it ranges from $4.4 million in San Francisco to $2.2 million in Dallas.

Many experts say short-term rentals, including Airbnbs, are part of the problem, restricting local housing supply and driving up prices. We took a look at three European hubs — Lisbon, Florence, and Amsterdam — that have imposed relatively strict regulations on short-term rentals. Cities have been worried about the impact of short-term rentals on housing costs for years. Instead of a blanket ban, Amsterdam caps the number of nights hosts can rent out their homes at 30 a year. In an increasingly tight housing market, the dominance of short-term rentals acts as an "amplifier," he said.

There’s a buzz of energy in downtown San Francisco from a source that has been missing for years: occupied storefronts. One of those shops is Paper Son Coffee, a roaster with flavors popular among Latin and Asian American communities that has been operating in the South of Market neighborhood since June. “People who work or live in the neighborhood stop in and are like, ‘Wow, there is something here!’” said Alexander Pong, an owner of Paper Son. “They’re excited.”Paper Son is part of an initiative to help San Francisco return to the days before it became a devastating example of what could go wrong with U.S. cities during the pandemic. Downtown San Francisco has the highest concentration of vacant storefronts in the city.

To the Editor:Re “Traffic Stops Fell in Pandemic, and Didn’t Return” (The Upshot, front page, Aug. 1):Thank you for highlighting the public health crisis that is the rise in traffic deaths across the United States. I advise children to wear a seatbelt, look both ways before crossing a road and wear a helmet when cycling. We need an evidence-based approach to this public health crisis. We need to invest in Vision Zero programs to fund structural changes, including speed cameras and physical barriers between cyclists and drivers. Cities need to invest in public transit systems.

Home affordability is particularly bad in many of the largest U.S. cities, but there are still some relative bargains to be found for urban homebuyers on a tighter budget. DON'T MISS: Achieve Financial Wellness: Be Happier, Wealthier & More Financially SecureHomes in these 11 major cities all offer median prices below $300,000 — much less than the national median of $412,300, according to U.S. Census data. The trade-off is that these places may offer fewer high-paying job opportunities due to more modest local economies. Here's a look at the 11 major U.S. cities where households earning $75,000 can still afford a home, according to HSH.

Homeownership in the largest U.S. cities has been put further out of reach for all but the richest residents, according to a recent analysis by mortgage analytics firm HSH. A household needs to earn $463,887 to afford a median-priced home in San Jose, California, making it the most expensive of the 50 largest U.S. cities. The estimate assumes no more than 28% of gross income spent on housing costs and a down payment of 20%, plus an average mortgage rate of 7.16% for borrowers with a good or excellent credit score. A longstanding shortage of homes is another factor that's particularly acute in California, which helps explain why median home prices in some of the state's cities, such as San Jose, are twice the national median of $412,300, per U.S. Census data. Here's a look at the 15 most expensive cities to afford a home, based on the income needed to buy a median-priced property in that market.

A few years ago, the organizers of one of the largest U.S. exercise programs for people with Parkinson’s disease realized they had a problem: Most of the students were white. But people who run Parkinson’s exercise programs in a handful of U.S. cities describe great difficulty in recruiting Black people. Johnson said his Chicago-area initiative offered a free six-month exercise program for Parkinson’s patients and increased marketing in the Black community but got little traction. When a white person shows up at the doctor’s office with such symptoms, a doctor would likely recognize them as signs of Parkinson’s, said Bernard Coley, an advocate for people with Parkinson’s disease, especially those in underengaged communities. After his less-than-successful efforts to recruit Black Parkinson’s patients into his exercise program in Chicago, Johnson concluded that the fact that he’s not Black is an “important factor.”Leventhal, who runs the Parkinson’s exercise program in New York, has come to the same conclusion.
