WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Defense Department, Pete Hegseth, is in peril as Senate Republicans grow increasingly concerned over allegations of drinking and reports about his treatment of women. Given Republicans' slim Senate majority in the next Congress, Hegseth, a former Fox News host, can afford to lose only three GOP votes, assuming all Democrats vote against him. Hegseth did not respond when he was asked for comment on those allegations Tuesday evening at the Capitol. Another Trump pick to fill out his Cabinet dropped out of contention last month amid opposition from Senate Republicans. Several Republican senators have continued to downplay the allegations, saying they support Trump’s prerogative to pick his own Cabinet.

A search and rescue effort was underway in Pennsylvania on Tuesday after a grandmother searching for her cat appears to have plunged into a sinkhole that authorities said was at least 30 feet deep. After lowering rover and pole cameras into the former coal mine, authorities heard no sounds but saw what seemed to be a shoe, Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Company Chief John Bacha told reporters. Rescue efforts continue for a 64-year-old woman who may have fallen into a sinkhole while looking for her missing cat in Unity Township, Westmoreland County. Pennsylvania State Police“It’s a modern shoe — not something you’d find in a coal mine in Marguerite in 1940,” Bacha said, noting the area where the sinkhole was discovered. One of the troopers searching for Pollard nearly fell into the sinkhole, which Limani said was roughly 15 to 20 feet from Pollard's car.

Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, drank in ways that concerned his colleagues at Fox News, according to 10 current and former Fox employees who spoke with NBC News. "Everyone would be talking about it behind the scenes before he went on the air,” one of the former Fox employees said. On Sunday night, the New Yorker detailed concerns about Hegseth’s drinking at two jobs he held at veterans’ nonprofits before joining Fox. “For the sake of national security, I really hope he has stopped drinking,” one of the former Fox employees said. Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston has been a highlight machine since taking over the starting job on Oct. 27 — both good and bad. That was never more true than Monday night, when Winston threw for 497 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-32 loss to the Denver Broncos. That would have been a great stat line, except Winston also threw three interceptions — including two pick-sixes. In true Winston fashion, immediately following Bonitto’s score, he led an 11-play drive in under 90 seconds for a touchdown. But one play after converting a 3rd-and-12, Ja'Quan McMillan intercepted Winston for a 44-yard score that gave Denver a 41-32 lead.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers made the midseason decision to switch starting quarterbacks, the move wasn’t exactly celebrated. Releasing Wilson cost the Broncos $85 million combined against their salary cap this season and next — the biggest cap penalty ever. The Broncos still had to pay Wilson $39 million this year after they cut him, minus whatever salary he made if he signed with another team. That allowed Pittsburgh to scoop him for a bargain one-year, $1.21 million contract, with Wilson getting $37.79 million more from the Broncos. In 2024, the polls conducted in the last two weeks understated his support by 2.4 points on average. First, it’s possible that the polls — once again — failed to capture enough new voters or voters who changed their votes from backing Biden in 2020 to backing Trump in 2024. This is a statistical correction that pollster used this cycle to address the previous undercount of Trump voters. Properly understood, pre-election polls can play an important role in democracy by providing a sense of what outcomes seem possible. The United States on Monday launched its third crackdown in three years on China’s semiconductor industry, curbing exports to 140 companies, including chip equipment maker Naura Technology Group, among other moves. Chinese companies facing new restrictions include nearly two dozen semiconductor companies, two investment companies and over 100 chipmaking tool makers. The companies include Swaysure Technology Co., Si’En Qingdao and Shenzhen Pensun Technology Co., which work with China’s Huawei Technologies.
