Coleman missed out on the podium at the World Championships in Budapest but broke the tape in a blistering 9.83 seconds as fellow American Lyles finished second in 9.85. Coleman, the 2018 Diamond League champion, exploded off the blocks and Lyles was unable to overcome a slower start. Jamaican Jackson finished second at the World Championships behind American Sha'Carri Richardson but took the lead in the last half of the women's 100 metres before breaking the tape in 10.70. World champion Warholm was strong favourite after claiming three Diamond League wins this year but Benjamin finished strongly to clock 46.39 seconds, the year's best time and fourth-fastest ever.

World champion Lyles to take 'victory lap' in Eugene, Oregon

Lyles earlier this month said he was ending his season after becoming the first male athlete since Jamaican Usain Bolt to win gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. "Every meet that happens after world championships I see almost as a victory lap," Lyles told reporters ahead of the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League final, where he will compete in the 100m on Saturday. "A lot of people will get tired and they don't really want to go to track meets and I'm like, it doesn't matter if you win or lose now because you already won world championships. "We've got to treat this like our victory parade, like when other teams go back to their city and they celebrate. The Prefontaine Classic runs Sept. 16-17 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Sept 9 (Reuters) - American surfer Caroline Marks powered her way to her first world title on Saturday, while Brazil's Filipe Toledo went back-to-back to claim his second championship with a hard-fought win over surprise finalist Ethan Ewing from Australia. Toledo, however, showed once again his mastery of his adopted home break, combining his own searing turns with high-risk aerials to edge Ewing 2-0 and retain his title. Marks, already a five-year world tour veteran at 21, overcame Hawaii's five-time world champion and Olympic gold medallist Carissa Moore in the women's final. Everyone from Florida and from San Clemente has been supporting me, I just can't believe it," Marks said after her win. The win breaks the stranglehold that Moore, Wright and Australia's Steph Gilmore have had on the world title since 2007, and confirms Marks' place alongside Moore in the U.S. surfing team for the Paris Olympics in Tahiti next year.

With the win, sixth seed Gauff became the first American to win a U.S. Open singles title since Sloane Stephens in 2017. The crowd urged on Gauff, the first American teenager to reach the U.S. Open singles final since Serena Williams in 2001. But Sabalenka blocked out the noise and used her mighty forehand to convert on a break point chance in the fifth game. The Belarusian was helped to another break in the seventh as Gauff double faulted and made two more costly forehand mistakes. Gauff produced an overhead smash to break in the opening game of the third set and converted another in the third game.
