This week Senator Joe Manchin, independent from West Virginia, called a committee vote on a bill to speed up approval of energy projects that puts environmentalists in a tough spot. The bill boosts solar and wind by making it easier to build transmission lines to carry green power from where it’s generated to where it’s needed. But it also boosts fossil fuels by opening public lands and waters to oil and gas leasing, and makes it easier to export liquefied natural gas. The fight against climate change depends on the choices that humans make, and this vote was one of the more important choices of the year. On the other hand, from what I know of the legislation, I think I would have been a “nay.” It’s far too friendly to fossil fuels.

CNN —The Marquesas are a beautiful, remote stretch of islands in the South Pacific. And, as of last weekend, they are also a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to data from the Institute of Statistics for French Polynesia (ISFP), 10,995 tourists visited the Marquesas in 2023. The Marquesas’ tourism industry is also managed out of Tahiti. Marquesan wood carving, dance and music form part of the islands’ heritage.

Self-managed abortions happen outside of the formal health-care system and without the formal supervision of a doctor or nurse. The new study suggests that self-managing an abortion with abortion pills has become more common, rising from about 18% of attempts pre-Dobbs to 24% post-Dobbs. Other research has found that abortions within the formal health care system have increased in the US post-Dobbs, driven by a spike in medication abortions, especially those provided through telehealth. “As barriers to facility-based abortion grow, (self-managed abortion) may increasingly become an individual’s only or preferred option to end a pregnancy,” the researchers wrote. “These findings suggest the need to expand access to alternative models of safe and effective abortion care and ensure those seeking health care post-(self-managed abortion) do not face legal risks.”

Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. Days 9 and 10 43 miles, through the original heart of Switzerland and the turquoise lakes of the canton of Glarus. This is the heart of Switzerland — the original cantons that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy, the precursor to the modern-day country.

Thanks to de-aging technology, De Niro portrayed Sheeran throughout his life, the lines on his face digitally smoothed. There are a few ways to make actors appear younger on screen using technology, each with advantages and disadvantages. In 2019’s “Gemini Man," the younger version of Will Smith’s character Henry Brogan has a fully CGI head. There’s an excruciating bit in “The Irishman” when a supposedly young Sheeran kicks another character out of his shop. This, really, is why de-aging megastars always feels a bit icky.

CNN —A person made an unsettling discovery on social media in February 2023 – the woman she’d been seeing for online therapy sessions wasn’t actually a therapist. CNN tracked down an online obituary for 58-year-old Tammy Heath-Randolph that lists Peggy Randolph as the deceased’s wife. Randolph “denies knowing” Heath-Randolph had been conducting therapy sessions using her Brightside Health Therapist Portal log-in credentials, the settlement agreement states. Brightside Health took “swift and decisive action” once it learned of the breach, a statement provided to CNN. The impacted patients were fully reimbursed, Brightside Health said.

“The Trolley Song,” a second-act standout from the 1944 movie musical “Meet Me in St. Louis,” was sung by Judy Garland in striking Technicolor. And yet it has found new life online nearly 80 years later as an unlikely anthem for LGBTQ Pride. “Happy pride month (sic) to Judy Garland in the trolley song. Kelleher likened it to Cher’s 1998 autotune fantasia “Believe” but “somehow even more gay.”Like Cher’s hit, “The Trolley Song” is dripping in artifice. “The Trolley Song” has been adopted by LGBTQ people since Garland first started singing it in concert.

Please keep reading even if you don’t give a bogey about golf, because I’m going explain how the strategies that make someone a better golfer can help in other parts of life, such as personal finances. My main source for today’s newsletter is Mark Broadie, who has dual credentials that are more related to each other than you might expect. He’s both an expert on golf strategy and a professor at Columbia Business School specializing in security pricing, computational finance and programming for business research. Ten years ago, Broadie wrote a book, “Every Shot Counts: Using the Revolutionary Strokes Gained Approach to Improve Your Golf Performance and Strategy.” It’s not about how to square your shoulders or adjust your grip on the club. It’s insight gained from dynamic programming, which is a tool that’s extensively used by economists, for example in calculating the optimal saving rate.

“I believe he’ll be a pro-life president in the future also.”Many senior Trump administration alumni and allies are now mapping out and drafting policy options for a second Trump term. A second Trump term would also put back in place and expand restrictions on Title X grants – federal funds for public and nonprofit groups that provide family planning. Resurrecting these actions in a second Trump would almost entirely be up to the discretion of whomever he appoints to lead the relevant federal agencies. With Roe v. Wade’s protections erased, anti-abortion activists would like a second Trump administration to push harder than it did before – especially in restricting access to mifepristone. Abortion rights advocates worry he could play an outsize role shaping abortion restrictions in a potential second Trump administration.

That is how we should understand Trump’s ranting in the wake of his 34 felony convictions last week. And as if to underline Biden’s refusal to interfere in Justice Department decisions, the federal prosecution of the president’s son Hunter Biden begins this week. In spinning this fantasy about Biden, Trump is telegraphing that, should he return to the White House, he will try to use the Justice Department in exactly the way he’s pretending it was used against him. In his telling, he never called for Hillary Clinton to be imprisoned, and magnanimously resisted the entreaties of others to punish her. “According to Sessions, the President asked him to reverse his recusal so that Sessions could direct the Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute Hillary Clinton,” the Mueller report said.
