LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Friends” star Matthew Perry, the Emmy-nominated actor whose sarcastic, but lovable Chandler Bing was among television’s most famous and most quotable characters, has died at 54. “Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family,” the company said in a statement. As Chandler, he played the quick-witted, insecure and neurotic roommate of LeBlanc's Joey and a close friend of Schwimmer's Ross. I ‘was’ Chandler.”Unknown at the time was the struggle Perry had with addiction and an intense desire to please audiences. But I could sometimes say a line and the audience wouldn’t laugh and I would sweat and sometimes go into convulsions,” Perry wrote.

Rep. Jim Jordan again fell short on Wednesday in his bid to become speaker, his prospects growing dimmer as time wore on. Twenty-two House Republicans voted against the Ohio Republican, as his opposition grew from a day prior, spelling trouble for his path forward in the chamber. Adding to Jordan’s troubles was a pledge by lawmakers to support Jordan in the first round as a good-faith show of support to their party’s speaker nominee – but not necessarily beyond. “This is the fight – which Jim Jordan represents – to end the status quo, and it ain’t easy,” Perry said. A group of Republicans on Wednesday were reportedly eyeing moving forward with a motion to empower Rep. Patrick McHenry, who was designated speaker pro tempore when former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted.

CNN —Conservative Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is bringing the House back to the floor Tuesday to vote on whether he will succeed ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy and finally end the chamber’s prolonged paralysis amid deep GOP divisions. But it’s not clear whether Jordan can be the one who unifies the fractured House Republican conference, with some lawmakers still opposed. Jordan can now only lose three votes, instead of four, but this is a temporary drop until the Florida congressman returns. “We need to get a speaker tomorrow,” Jordan said Monday after leaving a closed-door GOP conference meeting. Several Republicans – including from districts won by President Joe Biden – declined to say Monday evening whether they would vote for Jordan on the floor.

CNN —House Republicans are still struggling to reach consensus on a plan to fund the government, with lawmakers going back-and-forth over the issue and leadership forced to delay a planned procedural vote as they work to find agreement within their ranks. House GOP leaders canceled a procedural rule vote on the proposal originally slated for Tuesday morning amid that opposition from hardliners. Amid the impasse in the House GOP conference, there are discussions underway among some Republicans and Democrats about teaming up on a so-called discharge petition to fund the government if the House Republican-brokered plan fails on the floor this week. Five Republicans – most of them from the right flank House Freedom Caucus – voted against the rule, denying House GOP leadership of the 218 votes it needed for passage. Half a century ago, the Supreme Court ruled in the United States v. Nixon that executive privilege is not absolute. In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court in 1974 rejected Nixon’s argument – a ruling that marked the end of his presidency. But would the Supreme Court half a century later say the same? “It wouldn't shock me to find that the Supreme Court tries to avoid a showdown,” Geyh says. “One could see certain issues developing through the course of litigation that do present the type of constitutional question that the Supreme Court would take,” Geyh says.

CNN —Former Energy Secretary Rick Perry on Sunday teased a possible 2024 presidential run while declining to support Donald Trump’s campaign, becoming the latest onetime Trump appointee to distance himself from the former president’s third White House bid. “It’s early in the process, I think, for any of us to sit back and say, ‘I’m for this person or that person,’” Perry said. Perry is the longest-serving Texas governor in history, assuming the role in 2000, when Gov. Other texts between Perry and Meadows discussing how to overturn the election, signed by the former governor, also found the light of day during the investigation. We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Writing for CNN Opinion, Rep. Justin Pearson noted, “This should be a chastening moment for revanchist forces in Tennessee’s legislature and across the country. Over the long haul, the undemocratic machinations employed to oust us from office are destined to fail. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once famously said that the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice. “As a Jewish historian,” Perry wrote, “I worry about the tension between preserving the memory of past hardships while not locking our entire history into a tale of oppression.
Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., pushed back Sunday when asked whether he would recuse himself from any House GOP investigation of federal probes into the events surrounding the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, despite being a subject of those investigations. Everybody in America is innocent until proven guilty,” Perry said in an interview on ABC's "This Week" with host George Stephanopoulos. Perry was pressed on whether any potential involvement in a new committee would pose a conflict of interest given that he was among those being investigated. “So, should everybody in Congress that disagrees with somebody be barred from doing the oversight and investigative powers that Congress has? Perry also came under scrutiny by the Jan. 6 committee, which referred him and three other House Republicans, including McCarthy, to the House Ethics Committee for defying the panel's subpoenas.

That led the Pennsylvania lawmaker to be in touch with powerful Trump backers, including Meadows, Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark and others who pushed false claims of election fraud. Perry previously said that the Justice Department told his attorneys he was not a target of the investigation. Perry sued the Justice Department days after the search, then quickly asked the court to put the public-facing lawsuit on hold. The Justice Department approached Perry’s phone seizure and other phone seizures from Trump allies in two parts, according to sources familiar with the investigation and public filings. A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.
The EPA in 2021 proposed re-listing the Salt Lake City area as in “attainment” for small particle pollution it had been failing to sufficiently control. But wildfires and dust storms off Great Salt Lake are erasing the progress that has been made. “I’ve received a number of emails from concerned citizens reconsidering living in Salt Lake City,” said Janice Brahney, an assistant professor at Utah State University’s watershed sciences department. Meanwhile, researchers found the highest levels of dust — and metals — in suburbs outside urban Salt Lake City. Researchers suspect suburban communities north of Salt Lake City could be receiving the majority of the dust that blows off the lake.
