The airstrikes “should be the end of this direct exchange of fire between Israel and Iran,” a senior US administration official said after the attacks. After reports emerged of explosions heard in Tehran, Israel in a statement said it launched what it described as “precise strikes on military targets in Iran” early Saturday. One of the last Navajo Code Talkers, who helped secure an Allied victory in World War II by sending crucial messages in a code based on the Navajo language, has died. “On behalf of the entire Navajo Nation, our Navajo veterans and service men and women, First Lady Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren and me, we extend our sincerest condolences and prayers to the family of Mr. Kinsel,” Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said announced on social media. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has reached a historic $880 million settlement over hundreds of child sex abuse claims. The agreement in principle announced Wednesday settles 1,354 child sexual abuse claims, the plaintiffs’ attorney said in a news release. It is the largest single child sex abuse settlement with a Catholic archdiocese. In 2007, the archdiocese settled child sex abuse lawsuits with 500 victims for $660 million. No designated donations to parishes or schools will be used to finance the settlement, the archdiocese said in a statement issued after the settlement announcement.

By contrast, the modern day Democrats’ historic success at winning the popular vote hasn’t translated into nearly as much governing power for them. Over this record run of popular vote success, Democrats have already twice lost the Electoral College – and thus the White House – while winning more votes. Amazingly, Republicans won unified control of government in two elections when Democrats won a plurality of the national presidential vote: 2000 and 2016. The Democrats’ popular vote winning stretch began in 1992 with Clinton’s victory over George H.W. The highest share of the popular vote Democrats have won over this period is the 52.9% that Obama garnered in 2008.
