New York CNN —JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is raising the specter of the war on inflation getting worse before it gets better. The comments added to ongoing nervousness on Wall Street, which has been fueled in large part by concerns about the Fed keeping interest rates high for longer. Since early last year, the Fed has rapidly raised interest rates from near zero to just over 5%. If they are going to have lower volumes and higher rates, there will be stress in the system,” Dimon said. Last week, Fed officials released projections that pencil in just one more interest rate hike this year before rate cuts next year.

Slideshow ( 2 images )NEW YORK (Reuters) -JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon blasted stricter capital rules proposed by U.S. regulators, telling investors on Monday that they could prompt lenders to pull back and stymie economic growth. “I wouldn’t be a big buyer of a bank,” Dimon said at a conference in New York, drawing laughter from the audience. “All I want is fairness, transparency, openness,” Dimon said. Dimon said he believes that the Chinese market is no longer as lucrative as it was. Dimon has earlier warned about uncertainty in the Chinese economy hurting investor confidence and also suggested that the U.S. and China need “real engagement” on security and trade issues.

Investors, worried about the economic atmosphere and the recent regional banking collapse, breathed a sigh of relief at the results. Jamie Dimon, head of JPMorgan Chase, commented on the bank’s Friday earnings call that non-bank financial rivals were “dancing in the streets” as regulators get ready to increase bank capital requirements. “This is great news for hedge funds, private equity, private credit, Apollo, Blackstone,” Dimon said of the proposed regulations. The change, they say, will increase the financial system’s resilience following the failures of three regional banks earlier this year. “The capital in the industry is sufficient,” said Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan on his company’s earnings call Tuesday morning.

New York CNN —Bulls and bears have always engaged in battle on Wall Street. Before the Bell: Why is there a growing division between bulls and bears? If a rally continues, the bulls will say that the bears missed it. If it moves in the other direction, in a swift fashion, then the bears will say that the bulls were overly optimistic. “I don’t know if it’s going to lead to a soft landing, a mild recession or a hard recession,” Dimon said during the call.

New York CNN —Jamie Dimon isn’t sold on “Bidenomics.”“I’d be careful about that,” said Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, in reference to president Joe Biden’s economic theory that rejects “trickle-down” policies in favor of focusing on the middle class. In an interview with The Economist released Tuesday, Dimon classified Bidenomics largely as industrial policy – a strategy that specifically encourages or subsidizes particular industries, such as manufacturing. He said he’s in favor of some industrial policy lately, for the first time in his life, but only as it relates to national security and competitiveness. Although Dimon said he’s worried about a possible second Donald Trump presidential term, he said he doesn’t intend to run for office. At least for now, though, the “big storm clouds” Dimon warned about last year only “partially hit,” he said.

JPMorgan fails Jeffrey Epstein stress test

At least, that’s the impression left by Jamie Dimon’s answers to recent questioning in relation to Jeffrey Epstein, the dead sex-trafficker who was a JPMorgan (JPM.N) client for 15 years. Taken altogether, the case is a sign that the bank is simply too big for one person to manage. Epstein was a JPMorgan client from 1998 until 2013. Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Litigation related to Epstein is still pending between the U.S. Virgin Islands and JPMorgan, as are claims by JPMorgan against its former head of investment banking, Jes Staley.

New York CNN Business —During a closed-door meeting with business leaders on Thursday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stressed that the United States wants to work with China on urgent global challenges, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. The huddle with CEOs took place in Washington, where Yellen met with the board of the US-China Business Council, a group that promotes trade between the world’s two largest economies. Yellen’s meeting with the US-China Business Council comes amid high tensions between the United States and China in the wake of the Chinese spy balloon incident. During a speech in April, Yellen said the United States and China “can and need to find a way to live together” despite their differences. “A growing China that plays by international rules is good for the United States and the world,” Yellen said.

CNN —During a closed-door lunch on Tuesday, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told moderate House Democrats that Congress should abolish the debt ceiling, a person familiar with the matter tells CNN. “Get rid of it,” Dimon told lawmakers of the debt ceiling, according to the source. During the lunch, Dimon described the debt ceiling as an “unmitigated disaster” and urged lawmakers to reform it to prevent future crises, the source told CNN. “If I had my druthers, I would get rid of it one day,” Dimon told reporters in comments aired by CNBC. They are not a ten-foot giant,” Dimon told reporters after the lunch, speaking of China.

Dimon made the remarks in a deposition for lawsuits against the bank related to its alleged role in Epstein’s sex trafficking crimes. Dimon testified that he had never personally met or spoken over the phone with Epstein. Dimon testified that the bank’s general counsel would have had the final say to cut ties with a client like Epstein. According to Dimon, Staley and Erdoes could not have overridden the general counsel. “What has become clear is that Epstein could not have run his sex trafficking operation without the valuable assistance of JPMorgan, Chase.

New data out Wednesday showed that job openings and hiring both rose in April, while unemployment sits near 53-year lows. What’s happening: The number of available jobs in the United States rose unexpectedly in April after three months of declines. Job openings climbed to 10.1 million in April, according to data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has said that he wants to see more slack in the labor market. “I love what I do,” Dimon told Bloomberg, adding he’s “quite happy” in his current job.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon hints at future in politics

Dimon has built a banking empire at JPMorgan Chase and his advice is sought by presidents, prime ministers and central bankers. Now that he’s conquered the business world, Dimon is signaling an openness to at least explore an eventual second act in politics. “I love what I do,” Dimon told Bloomberg, adding he’s “quite happy” in his current job. Since becoming CEO in 2005, Dimon has vaulted to the top of the business world. Dimon steered JPMorgan through the 2008 financial crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic and now the banking crisis.

Could the Fed raise rates again in June?
  + stars: | 2023-05-21 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Traders saw a roughly 36% chance last Thursday that the Fed will raise rates by another quarter point in June, up from around 15.5% on May 12, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Traders pared down their expectations to about a 18.6% chance that the central bank will raise rates next month, as of Friday evening. Experts seem to agree that the Fed is unlikely to raise rates again in June. Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors, also expects the Fed to hold rates steady in June. Dimon said in the same Bloomberg interview that he’d “love to get rid of the debt ceiling thing” altogether.
A US recession is coming, they say, in the second half of 2023. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon warned on Thursday of great economic danger lurking just over the horizon. Things weren’t great last year: Inflation hit a 40-year peak, gas prices were elevated, consumer sentiment plunged and markets fell by 20%. “This has been the most predicted potential recession in memory,” said Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond President Tom Barkin way back in January. Historically, recession typically coincides with that peak, said Barry Gilbert, asset allocation strategist for LPL Financial.
Every family should be concerned,” Rohit Chopra, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, told CNN in an interview on Thursday. If Congress fails to address the debt ceiling, the federal government could run out of money as soon as June 1, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. “A lot of things we assume are part of our financial fabric would get ripped away,” Chopra told CNN. The debt ceiling is very likely to be a focus next week when Yellen is scheduled to meet with leading bank CEOs in Washington at a trade association meeting. Moody’s Analytics on Wednesday increased its probability of a breach of the debt ceiling to 10%, up from 5% previously.
And as the bank swells in size, so does the potential risk it poses to the nation’s financial system. Some experts say they’re concerned that JPMorgan’s continued intervention during times of crisis has broader implications for the banking sector, the US financial system and its regulation. And with every failed bank that JPMorgan snaps up, the conundrum becomes clearer: JPMorgan is essentially the biggest risk to the financial system — and every time it expands to uphold the sector’s stability, so does its risk to the financial system. It has “that ability once again, to signal to the world that JPMorgan is a fortress, JPMorgan is the ultimate. But recent failures and the missteps that led to them indicate that deep flaws underline the financial system.
Washington, DC CNN —JPMorgan Chase has once again come to the rescue of the banking system by acquiring a doomed bank. By blessing JPMorgan’s takeover of First Republic Bank, Warren fears federal regulators just made the” Too Big to Fail” problem even worse. My view on this is it’s important to look at the effect on competition and to try to keep a more diversified banking system,” Warren said. For his part, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon is hopeful his bank’s takeover of First Republic eases the stress in the banking system. Clawing back banker payIn the wake of the bank failures, Warren is calling for accountability — both of bank executives and regulators.
New York CNN —The collapse of First Republic Bank is unlikely to worsen the US economic outlook, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said Monday. Dimon told CNN’s Poppy Harlow early last month that the stress in the banking system had increased the odds of a US recession. The bank had $100 billion in those deposits withdrawn from the bank during the first quarter, it reported last week. “The American banking system is extraordinarily sound,” he said. But he agreed with Dimon that the seizure of First Republic, however, does not shift those forecasts, he told CNN Monday.
New York CNN —After a six-week spiral, First Republic bank finally collapsed in the wee hours of Monday morning. Everyone on Wall Street appears to be drinking from the same punch bowl as Jamie Dimon, who framed the sale as a bookend to the crisis. To his mind, the sale just makes JPMorgan, already the nation’s largest bank, even bigger, and the power of the biggest Wall Street banks more concentrated. That idea got an extra boost on Monday, when the FDIC itself released a report advocating for an increase in the deposit insurance limit for business payment accounts. “You can think of federal deposit insurance as being a bit like nuclear weapons,” he said.
The problem now, as I wrote in early March when Silicon Valley Bank was taken over by regulators, is that the math has gone bad for them. They’re losing their cheap funding and they’re still stuck with low-yielding investments that they acquired when interest rates were historically low. Market forces have already brought down Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank and First Republic Bank, the slowest antelopes in the herd. In terms of assets, not adjusted for inflation, those are three of the four biggest bank failures in U.S. history. The SPDR S&P Regional Bank exchange-traded fund, which tracks the stocks of the regional banks, has fallen 28 percent since the start of the year.
JPMorgan Chase reports record revenue

New York CNN —JPMorgan Chase (JPM) on Friday reported first-quarter profit and revenue that roundly beat expectations. That’s up from $8.3 billion, or $2.63 per share from the same period a year before, or 52%. With $3.67 trillion in assets, JPMorgan Chase is the largest bank in the United States and a bellwether for the US economy. Deposits rose to $2.38 trillion during the first quarter from $2.34 trillion in the quarter ended in December. “Financial conditions will likely tighten as lenders become more conservative, and we do not know if this will slow consumer spending,” Dimon said, adding that JPMorgan Chase is “confident that we can serve the needs of our customers and clients in all environments.”Shares of JPMorgan Chase climbed 6.1% in pre-market trading.
New York CNN —The war in Ukraine and US-China relations are two of JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon’s largest economic concerns, he said Monday. “The thing I worry the most about is Ukraine,” he told Bloomberg Television in an interview Monday morning. “This is the most serious geopolitical thing we’ve had to deal with since World War II,” Dimon said Monday, also highlighting the war’s impact on relations with China. Dimon said JPMorgan Chase is taking an active role in improving the relationship between the United States and China by advising and engaging with both governments on keeping cordial relations. Dimon added that he believes the war in Ukraine could continue for years to come.

Premarket stocks: Why investors aren't going green

ESG funds in September saw their largest outflow of investor cash since the March 2020 recession. These ESG and responsible investing funds saw assets under management peak above $8.5 trillion in late 2021. That’s because ESG ratings agencies tend to rate companies against others within their industry, so oil and gas companies are rated separately from automotive companies. A debate over how to regulate ESG funds is also adding to the noisy picture. But the hurdles facing ESG investing show that doing so is easier said than done.
Stocks weren’t doing much Monday morning but took a nasty – albeit brief – turn lower in the afternoon following stark comments from JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who warned that the United States is likely to enter a recession within the next six to nine months. “You can’t talk about the economy without talking about stuff in the future…and this is serious stuff,” Dimon said in the CNBC interview. He added that he thinks Europe is in a recession already and that the US is probably next. Shares of JPMorgan Chase (JPM), which is one of the 30 stocks in the Dow, were down nearly 1.5%. JPMorgan Chase (JPM) is one of several big banks that will report earnings on Friday.
