Jacob Wackerhausen | Istock | Getty ImagesWhat to know about the 10-year ruleBefore the Secure Act of 2019, heirs could "stretch" inherited IRA withdrawals over their lifetime, which helped reduce yearly taxes. But certain accounts inherited since 2020 are subject to the "10-year rule," meaning IRAs must be empty by the 10th year following the original account owner's death. The rule applies to heirs who are not a spouse, minor child, disabled, chronically ill or certain trusts. Since then, there's been confusion about whether the heirs subject to the 10-year rule needed to take yearly withdrawals, known as required minimum distributions, or RMDs. After years of waived penalties, the IRS in July confirmed certain heirs will need to begin yearly RMDs from inherited accounts starting in 2025.

But starting in 2025, workers aged 60 to 63 can boost annual 401(k) catch-up contributions to $10,000 — or 150% of the catch-up limit — whichever is greater. An estimated 15% of eligible workers made catch-up contributions in 2023, according to Vanguard's 2024 How America Saves report. Roth catch-up contributionsAnother Secure 2.0 change will remove the upfront tax break on catch-up contributions for higher earners by only allowing the deposits in after-tax Roth accounts. U.S. interest rate cuts are unlikely to move at an aggressive pace, say market watchers. The Fed kicked off its easing cycle with a jumbo 50 basis-point rate cut in September — but subsequent ones will be milder, they said. They highlighted the better-than-expected September jobs report, renewed worries around inflation, rising yields and an economy that's still relatively strong. How to position In that scenario — and with inflation expected to continue being sticky, it's important that investors still have exposure to commodities, said Landsberg. Christopher of Wells Fargo said if interest rates moderate and earnings are stronger than expected, market performance will broaden out further.

As the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, investors should review their bond portfolio, which could see a boost from dovish Fed policy. However, the Fed policy shift could be good for parts of the bond market, experts say. Typically, bond prices and market interest rates move in opposite directions. "This is a fantastic time to revisit bonds again," said certified financial planner Scott Ward, senior vice president of Compound Planning in Birmingham, Alabama. While it may be tempting to cling to cash, it will become "less attractive, less productive as interest rates fall," Ward said.

Men have been steadily dropping out of the workforce, especially men ages 25 to 54, who are considered to be in their prime working years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for prime-age working men was 3.4% in August 2024. But about 10.5% of men in their prime working years, or roughly 6.8 million men nationwide, are neither working nor looking for employment, compared with just 2.5% in 1954. It's a luggage maker best known for one product, a grooved aluminum suitcase with a rabid fan base. Despite this, the suitcase company (along with cashmere maker Loro Piana) continued their "excellent momentum," LVMH said. It's "another step in the fashion space," Bonnet-Masimbert said, and a hint of how the company hopes to progress in the coming years. For a company so synonymous with luggage, it was an "interesting challenge," the CEO said — one that took three years to develop. "We feel we are very legitimate in that space, and that opens a lot of future product offerings," Bonnet-Masimbert said.
