"But if it [a hostile takeover] is unavoidable, we think that two-thirds of jobs will disappear, that there will be another significant cut in the branches," he said, according to a translation. The three people who lost their lives in Alaska are just a few of those who have died on trips to see the world’s fast-disappearing glaciers. But there’s also another motivation increasingly present — the desire to see the glaciers before they disappear. In Alaska, Sheldon used to be able to find a good area for ice climbing for the whole summer. Many are convinced danger is manageable, he told CNN, but “if you’re honest about it, that might often be a rather naive understanding.”As well the safety issues glaciers pose tourists, tourists are also a huge risk to the glaciers themselves. As the glaciers shift, so too will glacier tourism, something that’s starkly clear to Sheldon.

President Vladimir Putin has warned Russia would be “at war” with the United States and its allies if they lift restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range Western weapons. “We are not talking about allowing or not allowing the Ukrainian regime to strike Russia with these weapons,” Putin said Thursday in comments to propagandist Pavel Zarubin. Stefan Rousseau / WPA Pool via Getty Images"This will mean that NATO countries, the U.S. and European countries are at war with Russia," Putin said. Putin added that the Ukrainian army does not have the ability to program long-range missiles or the satellite data necessary for their targeting, relying on NATO military personnel for those tasks. It’s been pleading for that policy to change so it can strike military assets deeper inside Russia that are used to launch attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Now, a team of engineers and geologists brings a new theory to the table — a hydraulic lift device that would have floated the heavy stones up through the middle of Egypt’s oldest pyramid using stored water. Water from ancient streams flowed into a system of trenches and tunnels that surrounded the Step Pyramid, according to the study team. The shaft within the Step Pyramid is connected to a 200-meter-long (656-foot-long) underground tunnel that connects to another vertical shaft outside the pyramid. Conversely, a moderate-sized hydraulic lift can raise 50 to 100 tons. “It doesn’t mean (the hydraulic lift device) wasn’t used,” she added.

CNN —A vital system of Atlantic Ocean currents that influences weather across the world could collapse as soon as the late 2030s, scientists have suggested in a new study — a planetary-scale disaster that would transform weather and climate. This research suggests it’s more likely than not to collapse by 2050. The impacts of an AMOC collapse would leave parts of the world unrecognizable. The emphasis in ocean research on the timing of the collapse is a relatively new development, said Rahmstorf. This research gap means the predictions could underestimate how soon or fast a collapse would happen, Rahmstof said.

What Kane really needs for his legacy, for his place in the public mind, is a moment. CNN —Ollie Watkins’ brilliant last-gasp winner earned England a 2-1 win over the Netherlands and a place in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final. Awaiting England in Sunday’s final is the formidable foe of Spain, which has been unequivocally the best team of Euro 2024 so far. After only seven minutes, Simons – named after Barcelona great Xavi Hernández – dispossessed Declan Rice in midfield and stormed towards the England penalty area, before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Jordan Pickford and into the top corner. Foden, who was having by far his best game of the tournament, then hit the woodwork himself as the post denied the Manchester City forward a stunning curled effort. England has known little more than disappointment and heartbreak since winning the World Cup in 1966, Southgate more than most.

A late winner from England substitute Ollie Watkins against Netherlands put Gareth Southgate’s team into the final of Euro 2024, where they will face Spain. It is their second consecutive European Championship final, and the first time England have reached a major tournament final abroad. Denzel Dumfries catching Kane was deemed a penalty, despite the Netherlands defender having little choice but to attempt a block. London CNN —British voters have handed the Labour Party its first election victory in almost two decades, hoping that a new center-left government will revive Britain’s ailing economy and fix collapsing public services. The win is a triumph for Keir Starmer, a former chief prosecutor who only entered parliament in 2015 and will become prime minister later Friday. “It feels good, I have to be honest.”But Labour’s jubilation may soon give way to trepidation given the economic challenges ahead. Making these problems even harder to solve: stubbornly low economic growth. To some extent, the government is likely hoping economic growth will be stronger than forecast and help with both goals.
