Emergency SOS via satellite allows users to text emergency services even if they are outside of an area with Wi-Fi or cell coverage. The free trial of Emergency SOS via satellite applies to iPhone 14 users who activated their device in an eligible country or region before Nov. 15, Apple said. The service is also available to users who purchased one of Apple's iPhone 15 devices, which was announced in September. The feature is free to iPhone 15 users for two years.

CNN —Nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards were revealed on Friday morning and SZA slayed. The “Kill Bill” singer and songwriter leads in total nominations with nine nods. Other top nominees among a list that highlighted the contributions of young women in music include Phoebe Bridgers, R&B star Victoria Monét, indie group boygenius, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. Nov 10 (Reuters) - Versatile recording artist SZA led this year's Grammy Award nominations with nine, coming in ahead of industry heavyweights Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish, in a year made for women artists and the movie blockbuster "Barbie." Victoria Monét followed closely behind SZA with seven nominations including best new artist and record of the year and best R&B song for "On My Mama." Rodrigo took six nominations, with her hit "vampire" getting nominated for record of the year, song of the year and best pop solo performance. Consistent with the girl power theme of this year's nominations, the motion picture "Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig, captured four of the five nominations for best song written for visual media category. She is also tied with her husband, rapper Jay-Z, with the most career nominations with 88.

☆ Iridium, Qualcomm end satellite-to-phone partnership

U.S. semiconductor giant Qualcomm ended its partnership with satellite communications company Iridium to provide satellite-to-phone services, Iridium announced on Thursday. A number of smartphone makers, service providers and satellite companies have partnered on projects including Apple , Iridium, SpaceX, AT&T , T-Mobile , AST SpaceMobile and more. Qualcomm said in a statement smartphone makers have "indicated a preference towards standards-based solutions" for satellite-to-phone connectivity. Iridium noted in its release that the end of its agreement with Qualcomm allows it to re-engage with others who are working on satellite-to-cell projects. Iridium said the end of the agreements does not affect its full-year 2023 financial guidance.

Tokyo-based Sony Corp.’s quarterly profit totaled 200 billion yen ($1.3 billion), down from 282 billion yen a year earlier. Quarterly sales rose 11% to 2.7 trillion yen ($18 billion), with gains in video games, image sensor and music operations and weakness in its financial and entertainment technology services. A deal was reached late Wednesday, ending the longest strike ever for film and television actors. Sony raised its full year profit forecast to 880 billion yen ($5.8 billion) from an earlier projection for an 860 billion yen ($5.7) profit. That’s lower than the profit recorded the previous year at 1 trillion yen.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Adidas said it might have to write off the remaining 300 million euros ($320 million) worth of Yeezy shoes left unsold after it cut ties with rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. The company included the possible write-off of the remaining Yeezy inventory in its outlook Wednesday for its earnings this year, narrowing its expected loss to 100 million euros from an earlier prediction of 450 million euros, thanks in part to the earlier two releases of Yeezy shoes. CEO Bjorn Gulden, who took over after the Yeezy breakup, is leading an effort to recover from the loss of the profitable Yeezy business. He declined to say what the company would do with the shoes if they remain unsold. The breakup with Ye left the company, based in Herzogenaurach, Germany, with 1.2 billion euros worth of unsold Yeezys and searching for a responsible way to dispose of them.
