Morning Bid: Some payback, but bonds hug gains on oil
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
The oil price slide was helped by signs from Israel that it's open to pauses in the Gaza fighting. The typically hawkish Minneapolis Fed boss Neel Kashkari insisted it was still too early to take another rate hike off the table. Elsewhere, the Reserve Bank of Australia raised its policy interest rate again, as expected, by another quarter point to a 12-year high of 4.35%. Overall, the global stocks picture reflected some of the cooling of last week's rally and some of the China export numbers. The increases in credit card delinquency were the sharpest among borrowers in the range of 30 to 39 years old, according to the New York Fed. Newly delinquent auto loan balances continued to climb, as well, with transitions into serious delinquencies hitting 13-year highs, survey data showed. Still, thanks mostly to higher-quality mortgage loans, overall delinquencies remain below pre-pandemic levels, New York Fed researchers said. Credit card balances, which in the second quarter surpassed the trillion-dollar mark for the first time, continued to grow at historic rates. This year is on pace to have the lowest origination values since 2014, New York Fed data shows.

[1/3] A woman passes by The Federal Reserve Bank of New York in New York City, U.S., March 13, 2023. The New York Fed foray into the topic comes as the central bank has retreated from the climate issue after facing heat from some members of Congress. Meanwhile, the central bank formally joined in late 2020 with other major central banks in efforts to shore up the financial system against climate-related disruptions. Some in Congress have seen the Fed’s climate work as a sign of a politicized central bank. That said, the Fed has not ruled out thinking about how climate disruptions affect the full measure of the economy.

Fed on pause as policymakers parse mixed data

"I believe we can wait, watch and see how the economy evolves before making definitive moves on the path of the policy rate," Fed Governor Christopher Waller told the European Economics & Financial Center Seminar in London. It can't continue this way, he said, but it's too soon to know which way the data will break. Should the economy soften, he said, "we can hold the policy rate steady." Speaking at a separate event at Queens College, New York Fed President John Williams offered a similar perspective. Fed policymakers are weighing whether that level is high enough to get inflation on a path to their 2% goal.

Morning Bid: US growth topping China as megacaps report
  + stars: | 2023-10-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
A street sign for Wall Street hangs in front of the New York Stock Exchange May 8, 2013. The combination of high-pressure growth and U.S. crude oil prices back up to their highest in two weeks has re-ignited inflation concerns. And with a 20-year Treasury bond auction also due later in the day, bond markets are back running scared. Two-year Treasury yields hit their highest since 2006 on Tuesday at 5.24% and held most of those gains overnight - while 20-year yields are hovering around 5.2% as well. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., August 15, 2023. Biden leaves later on Tuesday for a high stakes visit to Israel and Jordan and Washington said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed to let humanitarian aid reach besieged Gazans. That reversed a pre-weekend 'safety bid' that emerged amid fears an Israeli ground invasion into Gaza could draw other regional countries and groups into the war. Before then, bond markets will have to negotiate tomorrow's 20-year Treasury auction. The relatively new 20-year tenor has often proved unpopular and will be watched closely after a poor reception for the latest 30-year bond last week.

Student debt relief activists participate in a rally at the US Supreme Court on June 30, 2023 in Washington, DC. “Of course, the lowest-earning households still collectively owe around $7 billion a year in student loan repayments. After the Supreme Court dashed any hopes of loan forgiveness, more Americans started making loan payments before the official repayment period, as well as interest, kicked in. “It’s just all the supplemental spending, a lot of that will disappear so that we can make room for the [student loan] payments,” he said. Minneapolis CNN —Buy Now, Pay Later installment payment offerings appear to be disproportionately used by people facing financial difficulties, raising concerns about the potential for greater money trouble, according to research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York released Tuesday. New York Fed researchers delved into recently collected consumer survey data to determine who is being offered BNPL options and who uses them. They drew on data collected as part of the June 2023 Survey of Consumer Expectations Credit Access Survey, which included a set of BNPL-specific questions. “The fact that a disproportionate share of BNPL users are already financially fragile raises questions about the resilience of BNPL lending and its performance following an adverse economic shock,” New York Fed researchers wrote. The New York Fed research substantiates previously raised concerns from critics that BNPL may attract — and could ultimately harm — financially fragile individuals.

Both are determined by inflation-adjusted interest rates, which are represented by the variable r in economic models. The interest rate that causes demand for savings to equal demand for investing, is typically denoted as R*. To tame inflation that hit a four-decade high last year, the Fed has been raising interest rates. At the same time, if central bank officials continue to hike rates to get inflation down, they run the risk of overshooting. None of that would be the case at the neutral interest rate.

The gauge has never flashed a false positive - and it's likely saying the Fed made a big mistake, Harvey said. The curve officially inverted on October 26 last year, Fed data shows, meaning the recession signal is just a few days shy of the 11-month milestone. So it's way too early to say this is a false signal. Maybe it does turn out to be a false signal, but you can't say it's a false signal when you're not even at the average," Harvey said. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 13 basis points on Thursday to 4.478%, the highest level since 2007.

The results were part of the New York Fed's Survey of Consumer Expectations for August. Fears of credit access have been rising steadily since early 2022, around the same time that the Fed began raising interest rates. While the Fed worries over higher prices, the inflation outlook was mixed. Expectations for inflation one year and five years out rose just 0.1 percentage point on the month, taking them respectively to 3.6% and 3%. That comes with an unemployment rate of just 3.8%, or 0.1 percentage point above its year-ago level.

ORLANDO, Florida, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Investors are hoping policymakers gathering at the Kansas City Fed's annual Jackson Hole Symposium later this month will shed light on one of the murkiest - yet fundamentally most important - tenets of monetary policy: R-star. Even the New York Fed's two most renowned R-star indicators, the Laubach-Williams model and the Holston-Laubach-Williams model, are, metaphorically speaking, miles apart. Martínez-García's estimate of short-term R-star is negative, while the New York Fed staffers' models suggest it has "increased considerably over the past year". The Fed is near the end of its tightening cycle having raised interest rates by 525 basis points to the highest since 2007. Longer-dated real bond yields have shot up to their highest level since 2009 even as market expectations for inflation and Fed rates have held steady.

Minneapolis CNN —Americans’ credit card debt levels have just notched a new, but undesirable, milestone: For the first time ever, they’ve surpassed $1 trillion, according to data released Tuesday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. During the second quarter, credit card balances shot up by $45 billion, or nearly 4.6%, to land at $1.03 trillion, according to the New York Fed’s latest Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit. Rising credit card debt and auto loan balances helped to drive overall household debt levels up to $17.06 trillion for the quarter, the report showed. “Unfortunately, [credit card debt] is only going to go up from here,” Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst for LendingTree, told CNN. The number of people who made a hardship withdrawal during the second quarter surged from the first three months of the year to 15,950, an increase of 36% from the second quarter of 2022.

Household debt ticked up 0.1% to $17.06 trillion, as mortgage balances - the biggest portion, and typically the biggest driver, of overall household debt - were largely unchanged. But the quarter-to-quarter trend appeared less alarming, with New York Fed researchers noting a leveling out near pre-pandemic levels in the most recent two quarters. New York Fed researchers attributed the decline to the timing of the academic year, as well as to some small forgiveness programs kicking in. Overall mortgage balances ticked down to $12.01 trillion, from $12.04 trillion in the prior quarter, reflecting some changes in credit reporting that are expected to reverse next quarter, New York Fed researchers said. Originations rose about 11% to $179 billion, reflecting the sharp rise in car prices; the number of newly opened loans remains below pre-pandemic levels, the report said.

Officials were still worried about inflation and flagged a still strong job market, while a minority of policymakers expressed interest in raising rates at the June meeting. Logan also said that she doesn’t see anything tied to the Fed’s balance sheet drawdown affecting the Fed’s rate choices right now, and said the Treasury’s work to rebuild its cash account is unlikely to hit bank reserves, with the cash instead drawn from the Fed's reverse repo facility. REUTERS/Kaylee Greenlee BealNEW YORK, June 6 (Reuters) - Supply chain pressures cooled again in May, New York Fed data showed, in a development that further eased what had been one of the key factors that had helped drive surging inflation pressures around the work. The New York Fed said on Tuesday that its latest Global Supply Chain Pressure Index stood at -1.71, from the revised -1.35 for April. The report said supply chain pressures were below average in all regions of the world considered in the index. After peaking in December 2021 at a reading of 4.31, the New York Fed index has been steadily retreating as supply chain kinks generated by the coronavirus pandemic have gotten worked out. Supply chain pressures had been a key factor in pushing up inflation, which in turn drove central banks like the Federal Reserve toward aggressive rate increases to bring price pressures back in line.
