One proposal to Mr. Zuckerberg for 45 new staff members was declined. It was rejected and he returned to Mr. Zuckerberg in November with a scaled-down proposal for 32 new hires. It is unclear what Mr. Zuckerberg decided. At the hearing, Mr. Zuckerberg plans to suggest that Apple bear the responsibility for verifying ages via its App Store, according to his prepared remarks. Mr. Zuckerberg has long positioned Meta — and the internet writ large — as a place for both good and ill.

Zuckerberg is expected to tout the company’s more than 30 safety controls, according to prepared testimony released ahead of the hearing. In recent weeks, Meta has also begun hiding more “age-inappropriate” content in teens’ feeds and restricting teens from receiving direct messages from people they don’t follow. Ideally, Clegg said, Zuckerberg would authorize as many as 124 new hires, but acknowledged that financial pressures could make it difficult. After months of radio silence from Zuckerberg, Clegg tried to follow up, this time with a slimmed-down proposal that envisioned either 25 new hires or, if even that was infeasible, just seven. “This would be the bare minimum needed to meet basic policymaker inquiries,” Clegg wrote to Zuckerberg on Nov. 10, 2021.

But in 2024, there's a new idea taking hold that overtly rejects the urge to overspend and promotes speaking up about saving money — welcome to the era of "loud budgeting." What is loud budgeting? TikTok's loud budgeting trend encourages consumers to take control of their finances and be vocal about making money-conscious decisions, rather than modeling purchase decisions after celebrities and their bottomless pockets — and financial experts love it. In that way, loud budgeting is "it's almost more chic, more stylish, more of a flex." How to jump on the loud budgeting trend

WASHINGTON — Social media researcher Joan Donovan says she knows the exact moment her career began to go off the rails. "I got called into the principal's office and was questioned about why I'm talking about Facebook," Donovan said. In a statement to CNBC, Harvard Kennedy School Director of Public Affairs James Smith disputed Donovan's account of her departure. "The narrative is full of inaccuracies and baseless insinuations, particularly the suggestion that Harvard Kennedy School allowed Facebook to dictate its approach to research." Smith told CNBC that Harvard University and the Kennedy School continue to carry out misinformation and social media research to this day.

CNN —Editor’s Note: This story contains graphic and disturbing accounts of sexual violence. Sheryl Sandberg, a longtime advocate for women and girls’ rights, spoke out against Hamas’ use of sexual violence as a war tactic, saying at the United Nations Monday: “Rape should never be used as an act of war.”“Silence is complicity,” Sandberg said. Witnesses to the aftermath of the attacks say women and girls were sexually assaulted, tortured and killed. In an op-ed published by CNN last month, Sandberg called on the global community to put aside political differences and speak out. “The silence on these war crimes is deafening,” Sandberg added.

AdvertisementFor a few weeks in July, an uncanny phrase permeated the air that mildly pained some who typed it: "Hot Zuck Summer." And although "Hot Zuck Summer" might have been a lighthearted take on Zuckerberg, the latest scandal is anything but. Those accounts were then recommended Reels for adult sexual content and sexualized child content, the Journal reported. "Hot Zuck Summer" has turned into "Instagram Nightmare Fall."

Opinion: The big question about the Israel-Hamas truce
  + stars: | 2023-11-26 | by ( Richard Galant | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +16 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. And then it was back to war — a conflict in which some 8.5 million soldiers from all sides would ultimately die. The timing of the Israel-Hamas truce that took effect Friday had nothing to do with a holiday. But there is also the possibility that this truce won’t last much longer than the one in 1914. “The deal arguably strengthens Hamas, allowing it to claim credit, catch its breath and regroup,” wrote Frida Ghitis.

Israeli authorities are building cases against Hamas militants accused of rape and sexual assault. "The silence on these war crimes is deafening," Sheryl Sandberg wrote in an opinion essay. Rape and sexual violence have long been tragic elements of war and conflict throughout history, from World War II to the Rwandan genocide and Sierra Leonean Civil War of the 1990s. "In many contexts, sexual violence is not merely the action of rogue soldiers, but a deliberate tactic of warfare. "We can each 'be a witness' and together call out this unacceptable horror and unimaginable suffering," Sandberg wrote in her op-ed.

Washington CNN —Meta’s top executives, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, ignored warnings for years about harms to teens on its platforms such as Instagram, a company whistleblower told a Senate subcommittee on Tuesday. Meanwhile, both parties have united behind blaming Meta for contributing to a nationwide mental health crisis. Bejar’s research “is basically a smoking gun,” Haugen told CNN in an interview Tuesday. “Every day countless people inside and outside of Meta are working on how to help keep young people safe online,” said Meta spokesman Andy Stone in a statement. He said everyday Americans understand “the harm being done” and compared it to harms from smoking.

A second Meta whistleblower testified before a Senate subcommittee on Tuesday, this time describing his fruitless efforts to flag the extent of harmful effects its platforms could have on teens to top leadership at the company. Meta leadership was aware of prevalent harms to its youngest users but declined to take adequate action to address it, Bejar told lawmakers on Tuesday. "When I returned in 2019, I thought they didn't know," Bejar testified. Part of the issue, according to Bejar, is that Meta directs resources toward tackling a "very narrow definition of harm." If one user restricts a second user, only the second user will be able to see their own comments on user one's posts.

A general view of an exterior of the Ericsson headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, January 24, 2020. The Swedish telecom equipment maker's shares fell 9% in early trade to lows last seen in 2017, when the company was going through another downturn. Gear makers such as Ericsson and Nokia (NOKIA.HE) have been hit by a slowdown in spending by telecoms companies. Mellander said the company had increased its previously announced 2023 cost saving target of 11 billion Swedish crowns ($1.01 billion), including the laying off 8,500 employees, to 12 billion crowns. India has been a rare growth area with sales quadrupling to about 10 billion crowns, but that is expected to slow down next year.

But numerically the biggest problem ... is the broken rungs," Lean In founder Sheryl Sandberg tells CNBC. The key issue: for every 100 men promoted from entry-level to manager, 87 women, and only 73 women of color, are promoted. And while the promotion rate for Black women to manager rose in 2020 and 2021, last year that rate fell back to 2019 levels. The report debunks four key myths – including that the glass ceiling is the biggest factor holding women back, when it's really the broken rung. "Our data is super, super clear that women are more ambitious, or as ambitious as men, more ambitious than they were before Covid," says Sandberg.

Gen Z are abandoning the girlboss lifestyle to enter the new "snail girl era" taking off on TikTok. The term "snail girl" was coined by Sienna Ludbey in an article for Fashion Journal in September titled "'Snail girl era': Why I'm slowing down and choosing to be happy rather than busy." "'Hot take for the week, my inner girlboss is dead and my 'snail girl' era has begun,'" Ludbey wrote. Its features editor Maggie Zhou said in the video: "the girlboss is rolling over in her grave, welcome to the snail girl era." Although choosing the snail girl lifestyle may be more gratifying, it could result in financial or other consequences further down the road.
