The "Wicked" movie is a revelation — and it's full of references to "The Wizard of Oz" and the original "Wicked" Broadway show that came before it. His death was confirmed by his husband, Craig Curtis, who is his only survivor. While never a household name, Mr. Holliman was a seemingly ubiquitous presence on both the big and small screen, collecting nearly 100 credits over a career that spanned almost five decades. Among his many notable films were “The Bridges at Toko-Ri” (1954), starring William Holden and Grace Kelly; “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” (1957), starring Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas; “The Sons of Katie Elder” (1965), with John Wayne and Dean Martin; and “Sharky’s Machine,” the 1981 Burt Reynolds detective thriller. Over the years, he also popped up in many television series, including “Gunsmoke,” “CHiPs” and “Murder, She Wrote.”

In September 1983, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fell ill on a flight to Rapid City, S.D. By dint of his famous name, Mr. Kennedy, then 29 and fresh out of law school, was taken to a V.I.P. By his own account, Mr. Kennedy, who later pleaded guilty to a felony charge of possessing heroin, had become addicted to the drug in his teens, as he struggled to cope with the assassination of his father. Two days after the airplane episode, he checked himself into a New Jersey drug treatment center. Now Mr. Kennedy is President-elect Donald J. Trump’s pick to be health secretary, a nomination he landed after a renegade presidential campaign in which he cast his life as a redemption story.

It uses genetic data … to see if having certain genes linked to depression also makes people more likely to have menstrual pain. The findings help expand the important, and often overlooked, discussion around mental health and period pain. Below, experts elaborate on newfound and known associations between period pain and depression, why a genetic cause can’t be inferred from a genetic connection, and ways you can manage depressive symptoms and painful periods. On the other hand, experts noted that the opposite relationship — period pain or reproductive shifts preceding depression — has occurred in both human and animal research and in clinical practice. Additionally, methods experts know to be effective in treating period pain can also improve depression, Amies Oelschlager said — such as exercise, yoga, stress-reduction techniques, dietary changes and good sleep quality and quantity.

When they aren’t roasting millennials’ outfits or scrolling on TikTok, how are Gen Z-ers spending their time? Most are either working or attending school. Some are doing both. But a significant slice of young people around the world — about 20 percent of 15- to 24-year-olds — is doing neither, according to a 2024 report on employment trends from the International Labor Organization, or the I.L.O. They are what economists call NEETs, an acronym for young people “not in education, employment or training.”

The astronauts aboard the International Space Station are ready to break bread for a Thanksgiving Day in orbit. NASA astronaut Suni Williams said she and her fellow crew members will have the day off to celebrate. She and fellow NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore arrived at the orbiting outpost in early June, as test pilots on the first crewed flight of Boeing’s Starliner space capsule. The beleaguered Starliner mission was a dramatic, monthslong saga for NASA and Boeing. Williams said it would have been nice to see the Starliner mission through to completion.

These attacks ranged from bomb threats to ‘swatting,’" transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Three senior law enforcement officials briefed on the swatting incident involving multiple Trump allies told NBC News that these were not credible threats. President-elect Donald Trump said he intends to nominate Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford University professor known for his criticism of Covid lockdowns, to serve as the next director of the National Institutes of Health. In a statement Tuesday, Trump said, "Dr. Bhattacharya will work in cooperation with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to direct the Nation's Medical Research, and to make important discoveries that will improve Health and save lives." Bhattacharya gained national attention in October 2020, when he co-wrote the "Great Barrington Declaration," an open letter calling on public health officials to roll back Covid lockdowns. Several days after the Great Barrington Declaration came out, 80 researchers from the fields of public health, epidemiology and more published a joint letter in the medical journal The Lancet, calling the idea "a dangerous fallacy." Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, called the proposal unethical.

Abortion providers, meanwhile, got an influx of funding that enabled them to set up new clinics and extend hours in states where abortion is still legal. Abortion pills are a target for anti-abortion activists, who hope the incoming administration might revoke provisions that allow the medications to be prescribed via telehealth and mailed nationwide. In 1999, Gomperts founded an organization that transported women from places with restrictions to a ship in international waters to obtain abortions. In 2016, the agency enabled mifepristone — one of the two pills used in medication abortions — to be used up to 10 weeks’ gestation instead of seven. By last year, medication abortions accounted for 63% of abortions nationwide, up from 53% in 2020, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

A Republican senator is blocking the promotion of Lt. Gen. Christopher T. Donahue, the commander of U.S. troops in the final days of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, in what could be the first salvo in a Trump administration war against America’s generals. Senator Markwayne Mullin, Republican of Oklahoma, put a hold on General Donahue’s promotion to four stars, or general, after his nomination was sent to the Armed Services Committee last week, officials said. Sabrina Singh, a spokeswoman for the Pentagon, told reporters on Monday that the Defense Department was “aware” of the hold. General Donahue was the last American service member to depart Afghanistan as Taliban fighters took control on Aug. 31, 2021. A decorated former Delta Force commander, Army Ranger and paratrooper with multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, he was recently selected to lead the U.S. Army’s Europe Command as the war in Ukraine heads into its fourth year.

Furniture waste is a growing concern as consumers and companies seek to reduce carbon emissions. Apparel companies like Poshmark, Dpop and Thredup are thriving in online thrifting, but furniture thrifting is a lot more complicated, simply due to the size of the items. The New York-based startup is an online marketplace for buying and selling used furniture that provides pick-up and delivery for items. It also works with major retailers, like West Elm and Pottery Barn, to sell floor models or resell items that have been returned. For big furniture retailers, there is big waste in returns and the reverse logistics involved — from the costs to the transportation emissions.

Opinion | Would Bernie Sanders Have Won?
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( Ezra Klein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As the Democratic Party debates where to go after its 2024 drubbing, we’re going to spend the next two episodes of the show featuring two very different perspectives on the way forward. After Trump won the election, Bernie Sanders released a blistering statement saying, “It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them.”And Bernie’s advisers and allies have been making their own versions of this argument and jockeying for the positions that would help them rebuild the Democratic Party around this vision. Some have floated Bernie’s 2020 campaign manager, Faiz Shakir, to be the next chair of the Democratic National Committee. And the fact that they refuse to see it says something very telling about the party. At the same time, I’ve heard from a lot of Democrats who are annoyed, to say the least, about this attack from Sanders’s world: Democrats abandoned the working class?
