PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan speaks during a press conference prior to the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club on August 24, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said Wednesday that the organization is talking to several potential investors as a deadline to clinch a deal with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund rapidly approaches. LIV and the PGA Tour were engaged in an antitrust legal battle dating back to last year. The deal had the PGA Tour retaining control in the face of an existential threat, he added. The PIF and "likely another co-investor with significant experience in business and sports will help the PGA Tour take share from other sports and be even more competitive."

Phase Two, or Free Agency, involves those TOP 24 players who opted to become free agents and those who finished 25th to 44th whose contracts have expired. They can be re-signed by their previous team or negotiate with a team with an open roster spot. Cleeks GC have two open roster spots with both Bernd Wiesberger and Graeme McDowell finishing outside the Top 24, and Ripper GC also have two spots with Jediah Morgan relegated, although they have the option to re-sign Matt Jones. Fireballs GC, captained by Sergio Garcia, have one open spot as Carlos Ortiz declined a contract extension and opted for free agency, and Phil Mickelson's HyFlyers GC have an open spot after James Piot's relegation. Fenway Sports Group Chairman Tom Werner on Monday acknowledged that the company has held talks with the PGA Tour as the golf organization's framework agreement with Saudi-backed LIV Golf faces new doubts. Werner, who spoke alongside PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy, said that the players "will decide the direction the tour goes." McIlroy had been outspoken in his disdain for LIV Golf, saying in July that if LIV Golf was "the last place to play golf on earth, I would retire." LIV lured PGA Tour players, like Phil Mickelson, to with deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars. McIlroy sounded a friendlier note Monday, when asked about the potential for a renewed rivalry between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

LIV Golf is playing only for cash, not world ranking points, after the Official World Golf Ranking board determined it could not fairly measure the 48-man league with the other 24 tours around the world. LIV Golf made its debut in June 2022, and the lack of world ranking points has taken an enormous toll. Among those no longer in the top 100 are Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Talor Gooch, who has three LIV Golf victories this year. LIV Golf can reapply to be part of the OWGR system, though the board made it clear that turnover, objective access to LIV Golf and relegating players who don't perform remain key points in getting ranking points. There's also the matter of the PGA Tour, European tour and Saudi backers of LIV Golf (Public Investment Fund) working out a commercial partnership announced in June.

The idea behind the Ryder Cup task force that was formed after the 2014 matches was to build some continuity among the U.S. teams. He had been an assistant four times in the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. The key is to see whom Furyk, the 2018 Ryder Cup captain and now the Presidents Cup captain for 2024 in Montreal, selects as his assistants for next year. Saudi Arabia is pouring billions into sports in a bid to transform its economy. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has made the sector a key part of his Vision 2030 plan. But the reality is that the crown prince has a grander ambition: to level up Saudi Arabia's economic growth. "But Saudi Arabia is piling into other sports too, because they want to achieve a lot in a short period of time." Opinion | When Being Good Is Just a Matter of Being Lucky
  + stars: | 2023-09-20 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Indeed, one resolution of the “moral luck” paradox is that free will does not truly exist, Kristin Mickelson, a philosophy lecturer at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has written. The first drives drunk and kills a person. The second drives drunk and loses control of her car, but by luck doesn’t kill anyone. “Being blameworthy for an event is about being accountable for what you have done in the world,” Hartman wrote. There’s no excluding luck from our calculations, because luck “saturates” who we are, what we do and the consequences of what we do, Hartman wrote.

CNN —Phil Mickelson has opened up about his gambling addiction, saying on Monday that it was like a “hurricane” which “caused a lot of damage” in his life. Mickelson, who has previously talked about his struggles with sports gambling, posted on X – formerly known as Twitter – about his journey with his addiction in reference to the beginning of the NFL season. “Most of you will enjoy this football season with moderation while having lots of fun and entertainment,” the six-time major winner wrote. It’s like a hurricane is going on outside and I’m isolated in a shelter oblivious to what was happening. Mickelson went on to give his advice to others that might be struggling with gambling problems.

Phil Mickelson, the golf great whose issues with gambling have made headlines throughout the years, took to social media on Monday to share details about his addiction, and to offer a warning to potential bettors ahead of this year’s N.F.L. As the 2023-24 football season kicked off in earnest, Mickelson posted on X to say that he would not be gambling on any games. “I crossed the line of moderation and into addiction which isn’t any fun at all,” said Mickelson, who has won six major golf tournaments. The post went on to offer advice to anyone who might be struggling with similar issues: “If you ever cross the line of moderation and enter into addiction, hopefully you won’t confuse your enablers as friends like I did.”The post came on the heels of the autobiography “Gambler: Secrets From a Life at Risk,” published in August by Billy Walters, a well-known sports bettor who claimed to know about Mickelson’s gambling habits and asserted that the professional golfer’s sports bets totaled more than $1 billion in a span of about 30 years.

Phil Mickelson racked up $100 million worth of losses gambling, according to a new book by Billy Walters. The golf star also tried to bet $400,000 on Team USA at the 2012 Ryder Cup, Walters wrote. Phil Mickelson has bet over $1 billion over the past three decades, racked up $100 million worth of losses, and once considered placing a wager on Team USA winning the Ryder Cup, according to a new book. Walters adds that in September 2012, Mickelson asked him to place a $400,000 bet on Team USA to win the Ryder Cup – a tournament Mickelson was playing in — but he refused, asking the former World No. Mickleson denied ever betting on the Ryder Cup.

CNN —Phil Mickelson considered a $400,000 bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup – in which he was participating – according to a book that will be released later this month by professional gambler Billy Walters. “The only other person I know who surpassed that kind of volume,” Walters wrote, “is me.”In a Thursday post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mickelson denied betting on the 2012 Ryder Cup. Walters wrote he doesn’t know if Mickelson ever placed that bet. Walters suggested in the book, according to Golf Digest, that Mickelson was to blame for the prison sentence. A Lesson in Tender, Tangy Lemon Bars
  + stars: | 2023-07-24 | by ( Genevieve Ko | More About Genevieve Ko | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I had no idea what lemon bars were. My classmates said that my new school would turn my Chinese American self into a banana or a Twinkie — yellow on the outside, white within. Because the lemon bars didn’t taste like a loss of identity, but an expansion of it. But from-scratch treats from midcentury Americana were foreign to me — and lemon bars tasted especially mysterious, at once sour and sweet, rich and sharp. The next year, Betty Crocker’s “Cooky Book” included a recipe for Lemon Squares, which extended its popularity beyond local community cookbooks.

U.S. congressional lawmakers scrutinized PGA Tour officials on Tuesday this week about the group’s tie-up with a rival golf tournament owned by Saudi Arabia. Enter the Saudis, who launched an upstart golf tournament last year, LIV Golf, that competed with the U.S.-based PGA Tour and its European counterpart DTP. There are worries that Saudi Arabia, a regime viewed as hostile to women and LGBTQ groups, would have significant sway over golf’s culture. LIV Golf is owned by Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. CNN —With the Super Bowl heading to Las Vegas next year, could Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s unlikely golfing victory in Sin City be an auspicious sign for the Kansas City Chiefs? Mahomes and Kelce pulled off an upset 3 and 2 win against NBA stars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson in the eighth edition of “The Match” charity golf event, this year staged at Wynn Golf Club in Vegas. Quarterback Mahomes and tight end Kelce entered Thursday’s 12-hole game against their NBA counterparts as heavy underdogs, particularly given Curry’s prowess on the golf course. Mahomes and Kelce completed their victory on the next hole as the tight end – despite heckles from the side of the green – drained his close-range putt. The new entity will manage commercial assets for all of the tours, while the PGA Tour will manage competitions. The tentative merger agreement was signed by PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley and PIF's Yasir al-Rumayyan. The lawsuits came after multiple high-profile players including Phil Mickelson left the PGA Tour for LIV. The PGA Tour has said its executives would testify at the hearing, although it is unclear if Monahan will be present.
