O nouă variantă a virusului care provoacă Covid-19 a fost confirmată în cercetările coordonate de biochimistul Matthew McCallum și publicate în revista Science. Această variantă a fost prima dată identificată în California, Statele Unite, prezintă trei mutații și este rezistentă atât la anticorpii generați de vaccinurile ARN mesager (Pfizer și Moderna), cât și la cei produşi de infecția cu virusul SARS-COV-2. Rezistența la vaccinaruri a fost confirmată după analizarea plasmei colectate de la 15 persoane vaccinate cu două doze de Moderna, de la 33 vaccinate cu două doze de Pfizer/BioNtech și de la 9 persoane care au fost infectate cu SARS-COV-2.
