But after decades by the water in Florida, Meaders said Florida "is definitely not paradise anymore." Meaders wanted to be closer to her son and grandson, and the couple wanted a small-town feel. Meaders and Dunne met in Brevard County after Dunne moved back. They've found the hospitality of everyone in their community much improved, noting that many people in her small Missouri city recently moved from California.

In the U.S., Tesla may be at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, but abroad, the carmaker has some serious competition. In the fourth quarter of 2023, BYD dethroned Tesla as the world's top EV maker, selling more battery-powered vehicles than its U.S. rival. "BYD has grown into this powerhouse in the new energy vehicle industry," CNBC's Beijing correspondent Evelyn Cheng said. By 2003, the company had pivoted to autos and has since become the top car brand in China, as well as a major producer of EV batteries. Originally designed before America's entry into the Second World War, the YB-49 flying wing was intended to be America's first intercontinental bomber. US Air ForceThe flying wingThe YB-49 was the final iteration of a flying wing bomber concept created by legendary aircraft designer Jack Northrop, founder of the Northrop Corporation. A larger test aircraft, the N-1M, was tested in July of 1940, proving the potential of the flying wing design. The problems with aerial instability could now be solved by computers utilizing fly-by-wire technology and differential thrust, and so a flying wing design was submitted. In order to maintain a powerful bomber force and to keep up with technological innovation, the Air Force launched the Long Range Strike Bomber program in 2011.

This CEO wants to kill the résumé

Sundaram, now CEO at Applied, is making it her mission to kill the résumé — or at least diminish its role in hiring. Sundaram wants other leaders to follow suit because our work bios — and even job experience — aren't always good predictors of who will succeed in a role. The company might use only five or six questions per test to help identify suitable job candidates. When employers do want to see a résumé, Applied can use AI to strip away information about gender and ethnicity. For her part, Sundaram expects AI will change how so many people work that job candidates' employment histories might often reflect a smorgasbord of experiences.

How China Built BYD, Its Tesla Killer
  + stars: | 2024-02-12 | by ( Keith Bradsher | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
China’s BYD was a battery manufacturer trying its hand at building cars when it showed off its newest model in 2007. “They were the laughingstock of the industry,” said Michael Dunne, a China auto industry analyst. BYD is building assembly lines in Brazil, Hungary, Thailand and Uzbekistan and preparing to do so in Indonesia and Mexico. And the company is on the cusp of passing Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi, as the market leader in China. The last automaker to accomplish that in even one year in the American market was General Motors — and that was in 1946, after G.M.

However, the White House has, for the moment, rightly stopped short of concluding that a major escalation is inevitable. While this risks escalation, it might be necessary — and a lack of resolve is also a risk in the face of ongoing attacks. There is a history here that goes beyond the fact that the US is allied with and supporting Israel in its war on Hamas. There has been much speculation about whether, given these well-documented ties, Iran ordered the Hamas operation in southern Israel. Miscalculations — whether by Iran, Israel, Hezbollah or even the US — could rapidly lead to a multifront regional war with casualties easily numbering in the tens of thousands.

"The UK has been one of the real leaders in climate diplomacy and in their own emissions reductions," Ireland’s climate minister Eamon Ryan told Reuters. But according to the Climate Change Committee’s June 2023 progress report to parliament, to hit mid-way climate targets, Britain must quadruple its annual emissions reductions outside the electricity supply sector by 2030. He said he was changing the policy because previous governments had moved too quickly to set net zero targets, without securing the support of the public. Delaying net zero transition investments could prove politically popular, analysts observed, if an election was on the horizon. But "this framing only works if you think climate policy is a burden", said Bob Ward, a climate policy researcher at the London School of Economics and Political Science, adding that avoiding short-term costs was likely to lead to a greater bill for taxpayers down the road.

Meanwhile, failed uprisings in Bahrain and eastern Saudi Arabia were followed by years-long crackdowns and a continuing civil war in Syria. “What we’re beginning to see in Saudi Arabia right now is the emergence of a new social contract. Yellow filed for bankruptcy on Sunday with a loan offer for that amount from private equity firm Apollo, a senior lender to the company before its bankruptcy. The trucking company said earlier this week it was seeking alternative financing from MFN Partners, an investment firm that owns 41% of Yellow's stock, and Estes Express Lines, a rival in freight trucking. Yellow intends to use its bankruptcy to sell all of its assets, including 12,000 trucks and over 300 shipping service centers. The union, which represents about 22,000 laid-off Yellow employees, said the Nashville, Tennessee-based company "mismanaged" its way to bankruptcy. Yellow owes the U.S. Treasury over $700 million on a pandemic bailout loan approved by former President Donald Trump's administration in 2020.

UK councils call for ban on disposable vapes by 2024

LONDON, July 15 (Reuters) - Councils in England and Wales have called on the UK government to ban the sale of single use vapes by 2024 on both environmental and health grounds. The LGA said 1.3 million disposable vapes were thrown away every week. The LGA said councils were also concerned about the impact vaping was having upon children and young people. "Disposable vapes are fundamentally flawed in their design and inherently unsustainable products, meaning an outright ban will prove more effective than attempts to recycle more vapes," David Fothergill, Chairman of the LGA's Community Wellbeing Board, said. The UK Vaping Industry Association defended disposable vapes.

SummaryLaw Firms FTX founder allegedly misappropriated customer funds for European acquisitionFTX failed to find a buyer for the company in bankruptcy saleNEW YORK, July 13 (Reuters) - Bankrupt crypto exchange FTX sued insiders at FTX Europe AG late Wednesday, seeking to recover $323 million that FTX had invested in an ill-fated expansion into European crypto markets. After FTX filed for bankruptcy in November, it sought to sell FTX Europe, only to conclude that no buyer would offer meaningful value for the company, according to FTX. FTX acquired Digital Assets for nearly $400 million in three transactions in 2020 and 2021, hoping to obtain regulatory approvals and expand into European markets. FTX filed for bankruptcy protection in November, saying it was unable to completely repay customers who had deposited funds on its exchange. Prosecutors have charged Bankman-Fried, 31, with stealing billions of dollars in FTX customer funds to cover losses at its affiliated hedge fund Alameda Research.
