But extreme weather events have always been with us. Can we prove that climate change caused any particular disaster? But the burgeoning field of “extreme event attribution” comes close. Event attribution compares the odds of experiencing an extreme event given global warming with the odds that the same event would have happened without climate change. Which brings me back to the “politicization of the weather.” Worrying about the climate crisis shouldn’t be a partisan issue.

After our fill of scampering, we went to nearby Ponta da Ferraria to soak. A bubbling hot spring beneath the lava cliffs creates a heated cove right within the ocean. Joy is not a given in the natural world. The baby rabbit I watched cavorting in the pollinator garden was almost certainly born in the nest next to our backyard brush pile. I have seen no other survivor from that litter, and their mother is still the lone adult rabbit in the yard. I think the ever-present threat my wild neighbors live with must tell us something about the nature of joy. For some, Australia’s approach has been seen as a model, particularly in the United Kingdom, which wants to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda. As AI images, they’re powerful and controversial, not least due to fears they could be mistaken for real images in a world awash with false and misleading information. Amnesty International was recently called out for using AI images in a report to depict protesters in Colombia that critics said undermined its credibility as a news source. The refugee AI images were created partly because no “real” alternative existed – partly due to distance but also restrictions on media access and early bans on mobile phones. But the use of fake images to visualize accounts raises questions about when it’s acceptable to create AI images and how they should be presented.

The decision follows Major League Baseball’s announcement last week that teams would not put Pride logos on players’ uniforms and after a handful of NHL players refused to wear Pride sweaters or participate in their teams’ Pride Nights due to their personal beliefs. Hong Kong CNN —David Bellis first visited Hong Kong as a tourist in 1989. She spent more than three years in an internment camp in Stanley, now a tourist-friendly seaside area of Hong Kong. But little did she know, her wartime diary would lead to an unlikely friendship with another Hong Kong resident – Bellis. An avid history lover, Bellis collects old Hong Kong photos and shares his discoveries on his Gwulo website. But in her 90s, you know, she was still teaching us about old Hong Kong and she had (another) book published.

What do you think queer literature specifically has to say with its hybrid forms? Gay: I don’t think you can overlook nonfiction in talking about queer literature. Queer and trans people have, amazingly, taken that demand and subverted it, and that’s why those kinds of stories are so important. Also, Roxane, the point you were making about how some of the greatest truths of queer culture and activism have been done in nonfiction … Oddly enough, queer fiction writers have long hidden behind persona and character to write about queer culture and about themselves. I remember interviewing Galgut once and saying, “Your character Damon” — and he stopped me and said, “No, that’s not a character, that’s me.” I thought to myself, “I’m trying to protect you here,” which is a very quaint protectiveness on my part.
