Kevin McCarthy is now openly discussing the possibility of impeaching Biden. In response, White House spokesperson Ian Sams blasted McCarthy for the "seemingly bottomless" desire of Republicans to punish the president despite a lack of concrete evidence. The House speaker's mention is more than just a shot across the bow at the White House. As Politico pointed out, McCarthy's mention hints that House Republicans may try to start an impeachment process as a way to potentially unlock greater legal power. While McCarthy has been more guarded when discussing impeachment, some of the more conservative House Republicans have pushed for impeaching the president since his inauguration.

Consumer goods giant Unilever has confirmed it will comply with legislation that could see its employees in Russia conscripted into the war in Ukraine. It has around 3,000 employees in Russia, working across four manufacturing sites and one head office. Ecclissato said in the letter that Unilever has faced three options for its Russia operations. One was closing all Russia operations, after which he said Unilever's business and brands in the country would be "appropriated — and then operated — by the Russian state." The third, which Unilever has adopted, was continuing to run the business with constraints that have been in place since March.

In 2012, three months after Eddie Scott became sheriff of Clay County, Miss., a claim by a woman he had helped put behind bars threatened to tarnish his earliest days in office. The woman said in an April court filing that, while chief deputy less than three years earlier, he had coerced her into a sexual relationship after she was arrested. She laid out her allegations in state circuit court in October 2012 and asked a judge to overturn her prison sentence. To back up her story, the 26-year-old showed suggestive letters with a return address of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and signed by then-Chief Deputy Scott, who was 47. “Hey Sexy,” he wrote to her in prison nine months before his election to the top job.

“Careful!” Gwyneth Paltrow called to her daughter, Apple Martin, who was walking in black Gucci heels down a stone path on the family’s property in Amagansett, N.Y. Fans of the Grateful Dead are saying goodbye to the band this weekend. The day Garcia died in 1995, the Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir gave a concert near Boston. One fan, Albie Cullen, recalled that the encore felt like an emotional send-off for Garcia and the band. It was another emotional send-off, but it wasn’t the end, either. During Dead & Company’s eight-year run, the band once again became a cultural touchstone.

The first time Albie Cullen said goodbye to the Grateful Dead was on Aug. 9, 1995. A co-worker told Cullen, an attorney for a Boston-area music label, that Jerry Garcia, the Dead’s iconic lead guitarist, had died that day. The Grateful Dead had replaced departed members before, but this was different. With his rootsy tenor, Santa-gone-gray beard and unmistakable plucking, Garcia had defined a touring juggernaut and its vibrant subculture, which had become synonymous with the ’60s. The band’s four surviving original members agreed they would never use the name “Grateful Dead” without Garcia.

Representative Kevin Kiley, Republican from California, asked Khan about the cases that the agency had lost. “We fight hard when we believe there was a law violation, and unfortunately things don’t always go our way,” responded Khan. The agency also lost a fight to stop Facebook parent Meta Platforms from buying VR content maker Within Unlimited. Democrats on the committee sought to defend Khan, occasionally joined by Republicans on the panel including Rep. Ken Buck. Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, a Republican, however, worried about investors in small businesses losing their exit strategies.

Mr. Bowers was found guilty on 63 counts, including hate crimes that carry a maximum sentence of death. The central question facing jurors over the last two and a half weeks was whether Mr. Bowers intended to kill his victims — one of the factors necessary for a death sentence. “The issue in this case is, what happens when your brain is broken?” said Michael Burt, a defense attorney, in his closing argument. “What happens when you don’t have the ability to know what is truth and what is not truth?”thanks. CNN —Leslie Van Houten, a former Charles Manson follower and convicted murderer, was released from a California prison on Tuesday, a prison spokesperson told CNN. Van Houten was released to parole supervision, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesperson Mary Xjimenez said. Van Houten will have a three-year maximum parole term with a parole discharge review occurring after one year, Xjimenez said. In 1994, Van Houten described her part in the killings in a prison interview with CNN’s Larry King. “I went in and Mrs. LaBianca was laying on the floor and I stabbed her,” said Van Houten, who was 19 at the time of the murders.

The United States and China, as the world's two largest economies, must work together to combat the "existential threat" of climate change, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told Chinese government officials and climate experts on Saturday. "Continued U.S.-China cooperation on climate finance is critical," Yellen said in a prepared text. She said financing for such initiatives should be coordinated efficiently and effectively, adding that Beijing's support for existing multilateral climate institutions like the Green Climate Fund and the Climate Investment Funds, alongside the Washington and others, could boost their impact. China is the largest market after Europe for climate funds, surpassing the U.S. as funds in China have more than doubled since 2021 to $46.7 billion, according to research firm Morningstar. That group had in recent years developed a roadmap for sustainable finance, held workshops on carbon pricing and non-pricing policy levers, developed a transition finance framework, and made a range of recommendations on climate finance, she said.

A police officer, Jerry Moravek, came racing down the sidewalk toward the same noise. Their paths crossed, footage from a police body camera shows, and Officer Moravek pivoted to begin chasing Mr. Cooper, convinced that he was holding a gun.
