W. James Antle III Courtesy W. James Antle IIIHaley had steadfastly maintained that she wouldn’t budge if South Carolina Republicans opted for Trump over her. Polling in Michigan and many of the Super Tuesday states suggests the results will get increasingly worse for Haley from here. And given the deep commitment so many delegates have to Trump, Haley stretching out a long negative primary does not make her a likely Trump emergency replacement. In the coming days, Haley will hear from many Republicans who don’t want the Republican primary to end any time soon. But past primaries have gone on longer because other candidates have kept winning; Haley has no wins on the horizon.

What to watch in South Carolina’s Republican primary

CNN —Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign has for weeks been looking ahead to the Republican primary in South Carolina, her home state where she was twice elected governor. The primary in South Carolina is open, meaning Democrats and independents can cast ballots in the GOP race. The former president does not need to open a larger tent in order to win in South Carolina. It’s obviously not insurmountable, and with 50 at stake in South Carolina, Haley could theoretically jump into the lead. South Carolina awards 29 of its delegates to the statewide winner and three apiece to the leader in each of its seven congressional districts.

Despite another stinging defeat, this time on her home turf in South Carolina, Nikki Haley said on Saturday that she would forge ahead in the Republican primary race regardless of the daunting road ahead. She argued that Mr. Trump would be a losing candidate in November and that the nation could not afford four more years of his turbulence or what she described as Mr. Biden’s failures. “I’m an accountant. I know that 40 percent is not 50 percent,” she said to some laughs, nodding to her share of the vote around the time she spoke. “But I also know 40 percent is not some tiny group.”

South Carolina voters on Saturday are casting their ballots, deciding between former President Donald Trump or their former governor, Nikki Haley. Trump is holding a watch party in South Carolina where he is also likely to speak. "We have the resources to go the distance," a spokesperson for Haley's campaign told CNBC on Tuesday. Along with holding a polling lead, Trump has the endorsements of local South Carolina GOP chapters, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace and other lawmakers in the state. According to the February USA Today/Suffolk University poll, 42% of likely South Carolina GOP voters view immigration as the most important issue, while 26% prioritize the economy.

Indeed, on Monday, the local GOP came out and endorsed Trump days ahead of the state's Republican primary. "The Republicans of Lexington County made it clear that they support President Trump in the First in the South Primary and wanted to make their voices heard," Lexington County GOP Chair Mark Weber said in a statement. In 2016, Trump won his primary bid in Lexington County by about 6 points over Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, in a more crowded field. It's become a county to watch on primary nights — doubly so this time around, with its close ties to Haley. In addition to how Lexington County votes, here are some other things to watch on primary night:

While we’re waiting, here are takeaways from the GOP’s 2024 South Carolina presidential primary. She’d need to win New Hampshire, with its much more moderate electorate built in part on a slew of independents participating in the state’s GOP primary. And that potentially game-changing stretch of the Republican primary race is over. “I said earlier this week that no matter what happens in South Carolina, I would continue to run for president. “South Carolina is Trump country,” Scott declared from stage Saturday night after Trump asked him to speak.

The electorate for the South Carolina Republican primary looked much more like the one for January’s Iowa caucuses than for the New Hampshire primary, the early exit poll found. As in Iowa, well over 4 in 10 South Carolina primary voters describe themselves as affiliated with the MAGA movement. Exit polls are a valuable tool to help understand primary voters’ demographic profile and political views. The exit poll for South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary was conducted by Edison Research on behalf of the National Election Pool. It includes 1,990 interviews with Republican primary voters across 40 different polling places on Election Day.

As Nikki Haley stepped to the podium Saturday night, the bravado she had embodied after losing in New Hampshire a month earlier was gone. Her expression was somber and, for a moment, she appeared to be edging toward withdrawing from the race for the Republican nomination. We need to beat Joe Biden in November,” she said, as her audience held its breath. Finally, she pivoted: “I don’t believe Donald Trump can beat Joe Biden.”It was a remarkable corrective from Jan. 23, when she spun her 43 percent of New Hampshire’s vote from defeat into a kind of victory and vowed to beat Mr. Trump in her home state of South Carolina. And though Ms. Haley similarly resolved to stay in the race on Saturday, her fortitude now looked more like stubborn grit and determination than upbeat confidence.

But in the state where Haley once served as governor, she has trailed Trump by sizable margins in most polling. AdvertisementFormer President Donald Trump waves to supporters after a rally in North Charleston, S.C., on February 14, 2024. A Suffolk University/USA TODAY poll among likely GOP voters had Trump leading Haley 63%-35%, a 28-point spread. For many GOP voters, Trump is who they know best. And as the South Carolina primary ends Saturday night, that sentiment is Haley's biggest impediment to a victory.

South Carolina voters head to the polls on Saturday to cast ballots in a Republican presidential primary that could well determine the political fate of the state’s former governor, Nikki Haley, in her long-shot bid to derail former President Donald J. Trump’s march to the Republican nomination. Here is what to watch in the Palmetto State as votes are tallied Saturday night. Iowa was called for Mr. Trump before the caucuses had even ended. Polls in South Carolina will close at 7 p.m., and Ms. Haley is expected to speak in Charleston once the winner is declared. The Trump campaign will hold a “watch party” in the state capital of Columbia, where the former president is expected to speak.

CNN —The South Carolina Republican presidential primary is usually the most important contest of the nominating season. Since 1980, the only Republican to win the nomination without winning South Carolina was Mitt Romney in 2012. While Haley is unlikely to take South Carolina, she is definitely outperforming her national baseline. Both counties have relatively high levels of college graduates, who have been most hostile to the former president in GOP primaries historically. Trump winning college graduates in the South Carolina primary would match what we’re seeing in national polling of the Republican electorate.

When Nikki Haley ran for governor of South Carolina in 2010, one of her early campaign stops was the Aiken, S.C., living room of Claude and Sunny O’Donovan. “We fell in love with her,” Mr. O’Donovan, 85, said. “She was a dynamite gal.”A digital picture frame in the O’Donovans’ home still displays a photograph of Ms. Haley at the meeting. But on Feb. 24, when Ms. Haley faces Donald J. Trump in South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary, both of the O’Donovans plan to vote for Mr. Trump. “I think he has the values of the Tea Party,” Mrs. O’Donovan, 84, said.

“Christians, they can’t afford to sit on the sidelines in this fight,” Mr. Trump said. During his third run for office, Mr. Trump has often cast himself as a staunch defender of the Christian right. Mr. Trump has often appeared uncomfortable or unwilling to discuss abortion at length on the campaign trail. Evangelical voters have remained loyal to Mr. Trump. Gavin Newsom joked Friday that Nikki Haley — the onetime South Carolina governor and the last remaining major rival to Donald Trump in the GOP presidential primary — is a strong surrogate for Democrats. “So I hope she stays in, hope she does well tomorrow,” Newsom said, referring to Saturday’s first-in-the-South Republican primary in South Carolina. Haley, at a campaign stop in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, on Friday made the case that she is the better alternative to Trump. Newsom seized on the issue Friday, criticizing Republicans who argue that the ruling protects rights. “That’s on the Republican Party, that’s on (House) Speaker (Mike) Johnson, that’s on Donald Trump,” Newsom said.

Here’s what to know:Who is running in the South Carolina Republican primary? South Carolina’s primaries are open, which means any registered voter can take part in either the Republican primary or the Democratic primary, but not both. When Trump won the South Carolina primary with more than 32% of the vote in 2016, just about 1% of the GOP primary voters were Black. Only once since 1980 have South Carolina Republican primary voters not supported the ultimate nominee. The only recent election in which South Carolina did not pick the ultimate Democratic nominee was in 2004, when then-Sen. John Edwards, who was born in South Carolina and represented North Carolina in the Senate, beat then-Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

Trump says he supports IVF in response to Alabama ruling

CNN —Former President Donald Trump responded Friday to the Alabama Supreme Court’s in vitro fertilization ruling last week by saying he supports the “availability of IVF” and calling on the Alabama legislature to “act quickly to find an immediate solution” to preserve its availability in the state. “We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder! That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every State in America,” the former president said on his Truth Social platform. The controversial decision has enraged abortion rights activists and thrown into doubt the ability of women in Alabama to undergo IVF to become pregnant, as fertility clinics now weigh new and potentially onerous legal liabilities. Republican candidates and lawmakers, including Trump presidential rival Nikki Haley, have scrambled for coherent responses to the ruling over the past week.

Ms. Haley’s reception has been mixed, hosting fewer attendees at events in some of the more conservative strongholds crucial to a victory on Saturday. She has seen larger, enthusiastic crowds at stops near the coast and around Charleston. She pulls in people from across the political spectrum: At an early voting location in Charleston on Thursday night, one couple said they would definitely vote for President Biden if the general election is a Biden-Trump rematch. Another woman said she would reluctantly vote for Mr. Trump in November, and a man said he would consider a third party. But they’re all backing Ms. Haley in the primary.

CNN —A cargo ship that was struck by a Houthi ballistic missile on Monday has created an 18-mile long oil slick in the Red Sea as it continues to take on water, two US officials said Friday. It appeared to be the first time a crew has been forced to evacuate a ship after it was hit by the Houthis. The Houthis’ attacks have been ongoing for months, and despite several rounds of strikes by the US and UK on their capabilities, US officials told CNN it’s unclear how much weaponry the militia group still has. The Houthis’ attacks have increased in recent days; Singh said Thursday there has “certainly” been “an increase in attacks from the Houthis” over the last 72 hours. One other ship hit by the Houthis on Monday — the M/V Sea Champion, a US-owned, Greek-flagged bulk carrier — was carrying grain to Yemen.

CNN —US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday declared that any expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank would be inconsistent with international law - reversing a Trump era position that broke with longstanding US policy. “They’re also inconsistent with international law. The Trump administration had reversed US policy to declare that settlements did not violate international law. The top US diplomat said he was “disappointed” by reports that Israel would expand the settlements in the occupied West Bank. “It’s been a longstanding US policy, under both Republican and Democratic administrations, that new settlements are counterproductive to the cause of peace– frankly, they’re also inconsistent with international law, and this administration maintains this firm opposition to settlement expansion,” he said.

Stefanik has often explained it herself: She saw Trump’s popularity in her upstate New York district and got on board. That first impeachment proceeding made her a “Republican star,” as Trump himself said at the time. When there was a nationwide baby formula shortage in 2022, Stefanik blamed the “White House, House Dems, & usual pedo grifters” on social media. One upset donor told CNN in 2023 that he gave to Santos “because of Elise Stefanik’s endorsement.” Stefanik frequently denied any previous knowledge of his Santos’ history. “The American people stand with President Trump,” Stefanik wrote, “against the unethical, unconstitutional, and unprecedented weaponization of the judicial system.”CNN’s Alayna Treene contributed to this story.

US President Biden arrives to board Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on December 20, 2023, as he departs for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. President Joe Biden's $140 million campaign war chest has been bolstered by a group of loyal advisers and fundraisers that some party strategists call a "dream team" effort to defeat the likely Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump. "They have kind of put together a dream team in fundraising," said Jim Messina, who served as former President Barack Obama's campaign manager for his successful 2012 reelection campaign. Katzenberg has been speaking with donors to Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley and trying to recruit them to support Biden. But Katzenberg pointed to Haley's support in places like New Hampshire, where she won 43% of the Republican primary vote, saying that suggests there is a slice of the Republican party ready to move on from Trump.

At one point, Mr. DeSantis lacerated Mr. Trump’s record as president, saying he had failed to deliver on many campaign promises. “I was in Congress the first two years when Trump was president,” Mr. DeSantis said. One supporter asked Mr. DeSantis if he was afraid of being marginalized by Mr. Trump. Mr. DeSantis urged caution on such news reports but appeared to address years-old bad blood between him and one of Mr. Trump’s top aides, Susie Wiles, who had once worked for Mr. DeSantis.
