CNN —Mexican lawmakers were forced to suspend debate on a controversial judicial reform after protesters broke down the doors of the Senate building and forced their way into the upper house’s session hall. But as the crowd broke into the upper house on Tuesday, Senate President Gerardo Fernandez Noroña asked his colleagues to evacuate the hall to avoid confrontations with the protesters. Demonstrators try to break down a door inside the Senate building as a highly contested judicial reform proposal is debated on September 10. Judicial workers protest the government's proposed judicial reform, which would make judges stand for election, on Tuesday. While job growth in the sector faces uncertainty after the election, industry watchers say the future of energy production and consumption is always changing. The IRA is projected to generate more than 300,000 jobs annually for new energy project construction and about 100,000 permanent jobs each year, according to EESI. The rate was more than double the growth for the rest of the energy sector and the overall U.S. economy, according to the newly released 2024 U.S. Energy and Employment Report. Recent data from the Department of Energy showed clean energy employment increased by 142,000 jobs last year, accounting for more than half of new energy sector jobs. One sector that faces particular uncertainty after the election is clean energy, which has received a boost from the Biden administration but faced skepticism from Trump.

While many investors have been distracted by the recent drop in leading technology shares, a traditionally overlooked part of the market is seeing a major boom: consumer staples. The S & P 500 consumer staples sector hit a record on Monday, putting it more than 8% higher over the past three months. On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said 142,000 jobs were created in August, well below the 161,000 expected by economists. Against this backdrop, we used the CNBC Pro Stock Screener tool to find consumer staple stocks that could outperform going forward. In 1970 there had been only 18,333 students enrolled at degree-granting for-profit schools, less than a quarter of a percent of the total number of college students. In 2010, Tom Harkin, chair of the Senate's education committee, began a two-year investigation into for-profit schools. But even more shocking, federal money flowing to for-profit schools accounted for 25% of all federal student aid and 47% of eventual loan defaults. Students' money enriched every corner of the for-profit industry except one: quality of instruction. In fact, these for-profit students were actually worse off than if they hadn't gone to school at all.

Median household income rose to $80,610 in 2023, essentially the same as it was in 2019, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. The typical household’s income rose 4% from 2022, driven primarily by an increase in workers’ earnings. There were widespread gains across the income ladder, though income inequality did not change significantly between 2022 and 2023. Changes in the poverty rateThe official poverty measure fell to 11.1% in 2023, down 0.4 percentage points from the year before. The supplemental poverty measure has been closely watched in recent years because it showed the impact of many federal Covid-19 pandemic relief programs.

CNN —Two telescopes have spotted the closest pair of supermassive black holes to date. Active galactic nuclei are supermassive black holes that release bright jets of material and high winds that can shape the very galaxies where they are found. Astronomers discovered these black holes dancing around one another at the center of a pair of colliding galaxies called MCG-03-34-64, which is 800 million light-years away. Astronomers serendipitously found the black holes when Hubble’s observations revealed three spikes of bright light within the glowing gas of a galaxy. Both supermassive black holes once served as the centers of their respective galaxies, but a galactic merger brought the two objects much closer together.

The Federal Reserve gets its last look this week at inflation readings before it will determine the size of a widely expected interest rate cut soon. On Wednesday, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its consumer price index report for August. With the issue virtually settled over whether the Fed is going to cut rates when it wraps up the next policy meeting Sept. 18, the only question is by how much. "Inflation data has taken a backseat to labor market data in terms of influence on Fed policy," Citigroup economist Veronica Clark said in a note. "But with markets — and likely Fed officials themselves – split on the appropriate size of the first rate cut on September 18, August CPI data could remain an important factor in the upcoming decision."

Covid lockdowns, such as school closures, canceled sports activities and stay-at-home orders, prematurely aged teen brains by as much as four years, researchers from the University of Washington found. Lead researcher Patricia Kuhl, co-director of I-LABS, said that after Covid lockdowns began in 2020, they couldn’t do brain scan follow-ups until 2021. Pandemic lockdowns resulted in unusually accelerated brain maturation in adolescents. The research doesn’t prove the lockdowns caused the brain changes — mental health disorders were rising among children even before Covid. Another brain scan study in 2022 from Stanford University showed similar changes in cortical thickness in teen brains during Covid restrictions.

Tropical Storm Francine is expected to strengthen to a hurricane by midweek when it reaches the U.S. Gulf Coast. The storm started as a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico and strengthened into a tropical storm Monday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had predicted above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year, forecasting 17 to 25 total named storms — which is defined as having winds of 39 mph or higher — with eight to 13 forecast to become hurricanes. The above-normal activity was forecast because of near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, La Niña conditions in the Pacific, reduced Atlantic trade winds and less wind shear.

The trial of the man accused of murdering four University of Idaho students will be moved out of the county where the killings took place in late 2022, a judge ruled in a decision released Monday. Latah County District Judge John Judge heard arguments last month about whether the trial of Bryan Kohberger, tentatively set for next June, should be moved to Ada County, about 300 miles south and home to Idaho’s capital, Boise. Judge did not immediately specify the new location in granting a different venue, which he said was based on “presumed prejudice” if the trial remains in Latah County. A new judge is expected to be brought onto the case once it moves, although it’s unclear when the Idaho Supreme Court could decide on the judge and venue.
