Electric truck maker Rivian's $5 billion deal with Volkswagen Group nets Rivian some much-needed cash. But it also gives Volkswagen a path to a future in the auto industry it has struggled to gain on its own. As of the second quarter, Rivian was losing somewhere around $1.5 billion per quarter — or about $30,000 to $43,000 on every truck it sold in the past five quarters. Financial strain and instability in the EV market and the broader economy have led to multiple rounds of layoffs at Rivian. But there are still challenges: Automotive history is littered with failed partnerships, Rivian and VW are still competitors, and the EV transition has proven rockier than many forecasters had expected.

Though the debate opened with a discussion about the economy, the conversation quickly devolved into platitudes, boasts, and personal jabs. Industry leaders told Business Insider that they hoped to hear the candidates discuss crypto guidelines, regulation, and key appointments on Tuesday night, but little was said about any of those topics. "What we really need is either a debate or a whole section of a debate devoted to economic issues," Tedeschi said. Tedeschi told Business Insider that we need clarity about Trump's proposed tariffs, which are the "most consequential and radical thing that he's proposed." Chris Larsen, the billionaire co-founder of blockchain payments company Ripple, told Business Insider that Harris was "spectacular."

Read previewVice President Kamala Harris says she has a plan for America's middle class— building an "Opportunity Economy" to help them succeed. "Vice President Harris grew up in a middle class home as the daughter of a working mom. She believes that when the middle class is strong, America is strong," the Harris campaign wrote in a section titled "Build an Opportunity Economy and Lower Costs for Families." But just what exactly is Harris looking to do when she says she's going to build up the middle class through her "Opportunity Economy" agenda? During the debate, Harris accused Trump of only wanting to offer tax breaks to the richest people, while Trump countered by saying Harris lacked a detailed plan.

Kai-Fu Lee, chairman and chief executive officer of Sinovation Ventures, speaks during the HICOOL Global Entrepreneur Summit on September 11, 2021 in Beijing, China. BEIJING — Chinese artificial intelligence models may be at least half a year behind those developed in the U.S., but Chinese AI apps will likely take off much faster, said Kai-Fu Lee, former head of Google China. The top Chinese companies' LLMs are about six to nine months behind their U.S. counterparts, while less advanced Chinese models may lag the U.S. by about 15 months, Lee said. Lee, author of "AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order,“ is a widely followed commentator on AI, and is the founder of startup 01.AI as well as venture capital firm Sinovation Ventures. "Apps, I would predict, by early next year will proliferate in China much faster than in the U.S.," Lee said, noting that the cost of training a good AI model has fallen significantly.

The filing further alleges that Richard witnessed Combs “brutally beat” his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, including instances where Richard claims to have seen Combs choke, strangle, slap, punch and strike Venture with objects. “On many occasions, Ms. Richard tried to intervene, offering Ms. Ventura support and encouragement to leave Mr. Combs,” the claim states. Combs was seen earlier this year in a 2016 video published by CNN grabbing, shoving, dragging and kicking Ventura. While working with Combs in this capacity, the claim alleges Richard witnessed multiple instances of Combs committing acts of physical violence against Ventura. Concerns about the use of cryptocurrencies for illegal activity resulted in an effective ban on crypto mining and transactions. After a massive public outcry at the end of 2021, mining companies in Kazakhstan were effectively cut off from the grid. Today, the US makes up about 40% of the global hashrate — up from 17% during China's 2021 peak — making America the biggest hub for bitcoin mining. However, in recent years, bitcoin mining has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of private companies. Given how much energy bitcoin mining consumes, it's worth questioning whether its presence in the US is really worth the trade-off.

CNN —Kamala Harris’ joyful campaign will Tuesday be hit by the blunt force of reality — a debate with Donald Trump — the most menacing political foe of modern times. The vice president transformed the 2024 election after President Joe Biden’s abject debate showing against Trump on CNN in June led him to end his reelection bid. Disney and DirecTV are not likely to reach a deal in time for "Monday Night Football" according to people familiar with the matter. As a result of the fight, DirecTV customers were unable to see the U.S. Open and the first full weekend of the college football season. DirecTV alerted customers on Friday to competitor alternatives for watching ESPN and also said it would provide a $30 credit to customers. However, Charter and Disney reached a deal hours ahead of "Monday Night Football" that allowed customers to tune in that night. The dispute between DirecTV and Disney has led to mudslinging between the two companies reminiscent of most carriage fights.

LONDON — Atomico, an early investor in top European technology firms from Stripe to Klarna, announced Monday the launch of two new funds worth $1.24 billion to back emerging and growth-stage startups in the sector. Venture funding for European tech startups nearly halved to $45 billion in 2023, compared to $82 billion in the previous year, according to a report penned last year by Atomico. This decline was a reversal to pre-pandemic years which saw a wild rise in tech valuations, Atomico said at the time. In 2022, Europe's tech sector saw $400 billion wiped off its overall market capitalization amid a sharp slide in tech valuations. The size of Atomico's new funds marks more than a 50% increase on the $820 million it raised for its last round of funds, Fund V, in 2020.

New York CNN —DirecTV wants its customers to stick with the service during an increasingly nasty dispute with Disney that threatens to black out tonight’s “Monday Night Football” game. So DirecTV developed an unusual strategy: It’s paying customers to subscribe to a rival. Affected customers of DirecTV, DirecTV Stream and U-Verse can get a free weeklong trial of Fubo for two of its packages that carry ESPN and Disney networks and an additional $30 off the first month of service. DirecTV is also giving its customers a $30 credit to sign up for Sling’s orange tier that includes ESPN channels. DirecTV said the deals are a “small way” to help customers while its fight over the expired distribution agreement with Disney stretches into a second week.

CNN —DirecTV filed a complaint Saturday with the Federal Communications Commission alleging Disney did not negotiate in good faith as the two sides remain at an impasse on a distribution deal. ESPN owns the broadcast rights to “Monday Night Football,” which will be blacked out for DirecTV subscribers unless a deal is reached. “We continue to negotiate with DirecTV to restore access to our content as quickly as possible,” a Disney spokesperson told CNN on Sunday. From the moment Paul Graham dropped his essay on "founder mode," people online analyzed it like a stone tablet found bearing the new commandment of startupdom. But there's one group that has been privately wrestling with "founder mode" since before it had a meme-able name: female founders. Four female founders told Business Insider that a stark double standard prevents them from operating their startups as their male counterparts do. Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd wrote on Instagram that she was "in founder mode for 10 years and got attacked for it every single day." But unlike female founders, he and Neumann, the WeWork founder, enjoy the luxury of being given second chances by investors.
