Former President Donald Trump says that he wants to make in vitro fertilization treatments free of cost, either by requiring insurance companies to cover the procedure or federally funding it. "Because we want more babies, to put it very nicely," Trump said at a campaign rally in Michigan on Aug. 29. Since then, neither Trump nor his campaign has offered details on how such a plan might be paid for. But health care experts are skeptical that Trump could implement such a policy on his own. And winning support for free IVF among his fellow Republicans in Congress could prove exceptionally difficult.

New York CNN —As Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump take the stage Tuesday night in Philadelphia in their first face-to-face meeting, the spotlight will also shine on the host of the debate: ABC News. And Trump’s campaign had already accepted the debate rules as sent out by ABC News’ general counsel. But ABC executives remained confident both candidates would show up, and ultimately, the Harris campaign relented. In the days ahead of the debate, Trump has attacked the network, questioning its impartiality. Both Muir and Davis are experienced primary debate moderators, but neither has moderated a presidential debate between the Democratic and Republican candidates.

Pop superstar Taylor Swift endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president on Tuesday night, minutes after the Democratic nominee finished a contentious debate with Donald Trump. Swift wrote that she was recently "made aware that AI of 'me' falsely endorsing Donald Trump's presidential run was posted to his site." But the singer had endorsed President Joe Biden and his then-running mate Harris in the 2020 election. Trump told reporters "I have no idea" when asked about Swift's endorsement of Harris on Tuesday. "I've done my research, and I've made my choice," Swift wrote.

Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s name must be removed from North Carolina's November ballot, the state's Supreme Court ordered. The 4-3 decision by North Carolina's high court came hours after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that Kennedy's name had to stay on that state's ballot over his objections. In all three states, Trump polls better in a two-candidate race than he does in a six-candidate race. The state Supreme Court ruling acknowledged "that expediting the process of printing new ballots will require considerable time and effort by our election officials and significant expense to the State." "But our election officials are professionals, and I have no doubt we will rise to the challenge," Bell said.

Median household income rose to $80,610 in 2023, essentially the same as it was in 2019, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. The typical household’s income rose 4% from 2022, driven primarily by an increase in workers’ earnings. There were widespread gains across the income ladder, though income inequality did not change significantly between 2022 and 2023. Changes in the poverty rateThe official poverty measure fell to 11.1% in 2023, down 0.4 percentage points from the year before. The supplemental poverty measure has been closely watched in recent years because it showed the impact of many federal Covid-19 pandemic relief programs.

Business Insider's Brent D. Griffiths has a rundown on everything you need to know heading into tonight . A newly released Times/Siena poll shows Trump holding just a one-point advantage over Harris among likely voters. For Trump, the focus will likely be the economy, which is a high priority for voters and also a sore spot for Harris. The latest Times poll showed Trump (55%) held a big advantage over Harris (42%) regarding who would be better equipped to handle the economy. Trump will also likely target Harris' biggest vulnerabilities , which may include trying to define her shifting views as disingenuous flip-flops, Brent writes.

CNN —Kamala Harris’ joyful campaign will Tuesday be hit by the blunt force of reality — a debate with Donald Trump — the most menacing political foe of modern times. The vice president transformed the 2024 election after President Joe Biden’s abject debate showing against Trump on CNN in June led him to end his reelection bid. Haris will be ‘fully prepared’But to succeed in the debate, the vice president faces three difficult tasks. The conceit, however, allowed the Trump campaign to argue she’d return to her original stance if she won power. “I believe the vice president will be fully prepared to do that.”

Federal Reserve Board Vice Chair for Supervision Michael S. Barr testifies at a Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee hearing on "Recent Bank Failures and the Federal Regulatory Response" on Capitol Hill in Washington, March 28, 2023. Introduced in July 2023, the regulatory overhaul known as the Basel Endgame would've boosted capital requirements for the world's largest banks by roughly 19%. The change comes after banks, business groups, lawmakers and others weighed in on the possible impact of the original proposal, Barr told an audience at the Brookings Institution. "There are benefits and costs to increasing capital requirements. That would likely boost capital requirements by 3% to 4% over time, Barr said.

Former first lady Melania Trump questioned the official account of the attempted assassination this summer of her husband, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Speaking in a dramatically produced 30-second video, posted to social media Tuesday to promote her new memoir, Trump argues there is "definitely more to the story." She refers specifically to the failure of law enforcement to arrest the shooter Thomas Crooks before the near-fatal shooting of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in western Pennsylvania. "There is definitely more to this story, and we need to uncover the truth." The video ends with an image of her new book, "Melania," and a link to buy copies of it.
