Since joining the Fed last year, Cook said she's worked with her colleagues to combat high inflation and if she is confirmed for more time at the Fed, Cook said that's how she will continue to work. Cook attended the hearing with Philip Jefferson, a Fed governor nominated to become vice chair, and Adriana Kugler, the U.S. executive director to the World Bank who has been nominated to fill a governor slot. Kugler is prospectively the first-ever Latina to serve on the Fed in its just over a century long history. "I spent my childhood in Colombia, where in the late 1970s and early 80s inflation was very high, hovering about 25%. The three nominees did not offer any guidance about what they think the Fed should do with monetary policy beyond affirming the importance of bringing inflation back to the 2% target.

WASHINGTON — Members of the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday will consider a bill that would aim to hold banking executives accountable in the wake of the collapse of several big banks. The Recovering Executive Compensation from Unaccountable Practices Act, known as the RECOUP Act, would give regulators power to claw back compensation for executives of failed banks, institute penalties for misconduct and direct banks to beef up corporate governance, according to the committee. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, chairman of the committee, and ranking member Tim Scott, R-S.C., announced an agreement on the legislation last week. Brown is up for reelection next year, and Scott is running for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

I suppose it must be good news for the Nats at some level, but the Mets weren’t really their problem. Books by candidatesI previously mentioned that I don’t read books by aspiring presidential candidates. Of course, someone is unlikely to read a book by a candidate unless they are somewhat interested in that person. — Angie BoyterWhen I wrote that I don’t read a presidential candidate’s book, I was mainly thinking about the genre of political books written by someone just about to run for president. They largely go unread, but they offer an excuse for TV producers to book a presidential hopeful on their shows.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s support appears to have softened following his indictment and arrest on federal charges, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. Most Americans approve of Trump’s indictment stemming from his alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office, even as 71% say politics played a role in that charging decision. Overall, 47% of Republicans and Republican-leaning registered voters say Trump is their first choice for the party’s nomination for president, down from 53% in a May CNN poll. A 54% majority of Republican and Republican-leaning voters say that Trump’s conduct doesn’t matter much to them as they consider his candidacy, because a president’s effectiveness matters more. Most Republican and Republican-leaning voters who support Trump for the nomination say he did nothing wrong in this case (58%) and just 3% that he acted illegally.

Washington CNN —Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie said Sunday it was a “useless idea” to force 2024 GOP contenders to sign a pledge to back the party’s ultimate nominee in order to participate in primary debates. “It’s only in the era of Donald Trump that you need somebody to sign something on a pledge. Trump, as a candidate in 2015, did not rule out an independent run for president at a debate in Cleveland. He ultimately signed a pledge to support the party’s eventual nominee and to not run as a third-party candidate if he did not win the GOP nomination. The RNC announced earlier this month that the first presidential primary debate will take place on August 23 in Milwaukee.

WASHINGTON, June 16 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate Banking Committee will consider a bill Wednesday that would allow regulators to claw back compensation for executives at failed banks. The bill, which also would require banks to include in their bylaws standards around responsible bank management, comes in response to the abrupt failures of Silicon Valley Bank and other banks in recent months, which set off broader turmoil in the banking sector. "Americans have watched executives take their money, run banks into the ground, and get away with it too many times before. It’s time for CEOs to face consequences for their actions, just like everyone else," said Brown in a statement. Former US President Donald Trump arrives to deliver remarks at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster, New Jersey, on June 13, 2023. That sort of comment is further than where many of Trump's rivals for the GOP presidential nomination will go publicly. Still, even out in the open, there are indications that they believe this federal indictment is far more serious than the last one. But the Trump indictment took over, with participants expressing deep concern about backlash and the party's fracturing beyond repair. On one hand, if Trump's GOP rivals blast him, they risk further alienating his committed GOP supporters.

US consumer watchdog defends credit card 'junk fee' proposal

June 13 (Reuters) - The top U.S. consumer watchdog on Tuesday defended a proposal to limit late fees charged on credit card balances, a move that has faced fierce opposition from the banking industry. In testimony before the Senate, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra rejected arguments by banks that capping late fees would force them recover the lost revenue by charging higher interest rates or cutting access to credit for some. "They are fully allowed to capture their costs," Chopra said under questioning from Senator Tim Scott, the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, who recently announced his 2024 presidential bid. "One of the things that our issuers tell us is that they don't want to profit off of late fees. The CFPB in February rolled out a regulatory proposal that would cap late fees at $8, far lower than the current $30-$41, unless credit card issuers could justify charging more, part of the Biden administration's attack on what it calls consumer "junk fees."

The only notable Congressional Republican to really condemn Trump was Senator Mitt Romney of Utah. With vanishingly few exceptions, Republicans are unwilling either to discipline Trump, withdraw their support for his political leadership or even just criticize him for his actions. The most we’ve seen, Romney aside, is a nod to the fact that these are serious charges. The first concerns something that exists wherever there is a relationship between an individual and an institution. Loyalty makes it less likely that a dissenter just ups and walks away, especially when there isn’t a plausible alternative.

CNN —Next year will mark 50 years since President Richard Nixon resigned as a result of the Watergate scandal. The fact is that almost all of the serious Republican contenders were complicit in helping Trump at one point or another. The most important factor remains the intense partisanship that we see within the Republican Party. This intense partisanship also gave rise to an extreme theory of presidential power that has taken hold since Ronald Reagan was president. All of these factors have converged to allow Trump to remain the most powerful Republican in the room.
