CNN —The government of China now possesses something that no other humans have ever encountered — rocks and soil from the far side of the moon. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson told CNN he’s “pleased to hear CNSA intends to share” the materials collected by the Chang’e-6 lunar probe last month. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, shown here during a pre-launch news conference on Boeing's first crewed spacecraft, the Boeing Starliner, on May 3, said he's "pleased" China intends to share the lunar far side samples. China opened those samples to international scientists for the first time last August, and Nelson has given NASA-funded researchers the green light to apply for access. TheUS government has not landed a robotic spacecraft on the moon since 1968, but NASA is currently funding the development of lunar landers by private companies through its Commercial Lunar Payload Services, or CLPS program.

CNN —A Chinese rocket crashed after being accidentally launched during a ground test Sunday, its company Space Pioneer said in a statement. The crash happened when the first stage of the Tianlong-3 rocket detached from its launch pad during a test, due to structural failure. “Due to the structural failure of the connection between the rocket body and the test platform, the first-stage rocket was separated from the launch pad,” Space Pioneer, also known as Beijing Tianbing Technology, said. Space Pioneer, a leading company in the commercial rocket sphere, specializes in liquid-propellant rockets. In April 2023, it successfully launched its Tianlong-2 rocket, making the company China’s first commercial launch operator to send a liquid carrier rocket into space and successfully enter orbit, according to state media.

Astronauts currently wear spacesuits — called Extravehicular Activity, or EVA, suits — designed more than 40 years ago when conducting spacewalks. Collins Aerospace’s Next-Gen spacesuit, intended for use at the International Space Station, is seen during the design process. NASA plans to retire the space station sometime within the next several years. But Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, has only guaranteed its participation through “at least 2028.”

CNN —Forecasters will soon be able to see real-time mapping of lightning activity on Earth and keep a closer eye on solar storms unleashed by the sun thanks to a new weather satellite. The weather satellite lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 5:26 p.m. What sets GOES-U apart from other satellites is that it’s carrying a new capability to keep an eye on space weather. The coronagraph will provide continuous observations of the solar corona, or the hot outer layer of the sun’s atmosphere, which is where space weather events originate, said Elsayed Talaat, director of NOAA’s Office of Space Weather Observations. The instrument’s capabilities will allow NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center to issue warnings and watches one to four days in advance and “mark a new chapter in space weather observatoions,” Talaat said.

New York CNN —Elon Musk told advertisers last year to “go f**k yourself.” This year, he is showcasing a much different attitude. The erratic billionaire, realizing that he very much needs major advertisers to power X, was in the South of France on Wednesday, attending Cannes Lions, the world’s largest advertising festival. Put together, it’s is no mystery why major brands have taken their advertising dollars elsewhere. Musk even said at the time that the damage to X’s bottom line was so great, it could eventually kill the company. Musk likely does not want to see the platform go the way of the woolly mammoth, which is why he is now trying to woo advertisers back.

It’s not uncommon for astronauts to unexpectedly extend their stay aboard the space station — for days, weeks or even months. But the situation makes for a moment of uncertainty and embarrassment that joins a long list of similar blunders by the Boeing Starliner program, which is already years behind schedule. The Starliner spacecraft on NASA's Boeing Crew Flight Test is pictured docked to the Harmony module's forward port on June 13 as the International Space Station orbited 262 miles above Egypt's Mediterranean coast. The first Starliner test mission, flown without crew in late 2019, was riddled with missteps.
