Wall Street's turbulent year has afforded investors plenty of opportunities to buy stocks on a pullback. While our Humana thesis hasn't been shaken, that doesn't mean we're really getting an opportunity to buy more shares. We think a move of that magnitude, in a volatile market replete with selling pressure, hardly qualifies as a pullback for a stock that's been such an outperformer. As much as we might like the stock for long-term fundamental reasons, sometimes the volatile day-to-day nature of the market has other plans. We are buying 40 shares of Estee Lauder (EL) at roughly $202.18 a share. Shares of this cosmetics giant have lagged in recent weeks for two reasons. This shift has allowed Estee Lauder to recapture some lost market share and improve its operating margin outlook. Over the last three years, Estee Lauder has expanded its operating margins by 220 basis points. Given this backdrop, we will continue to add to our Estee Lauder position using wide scales, a strategy we referenced in our explainer on how to buy a pullback.
Third-quarter results from the big Wall Street banks are now behind us, and they were … pretty good, all things considered? Goldman Sachs reported yesterday, and while it may not be the biggest nor the best bank (OK, No. Trading and dealmaking made the reputation of the 153-year-old Wall Street firm, but the spotlight lately has been on its struggling consumer banking unit, Marcus. The consumer business "doesn't make money at the moment," Solomon acknowledged, but he added: "The deposits are hugely valuable. From Wall Street darlings to prey.
The expected move at the BoC's next meeting would be the second consecutive reduction in the size of rate rises after a 100 basis point move in July and 75 basis points last month. Given more U.S. Federal Reserve rate rises are due in coming months, the BoC is likely to get the overnight rate, currently at 3.25%, even further above its 2-3% estimate of neutral, where the economy is neither stimulated nor restricted. So far the BoC has matched the 300 basis points of Fed rate rises since March. "We continue to assume the BoC will dial back the pace of rate hikes with a 50 basis point increase later this month," said Josh Nye, senior economist at RBC. Most economists forecast another slowdown in the size of rate rises to 25 basis points in December and January, taking the overnight rate to a peak of 4.25%.

Traders are back on Japanese yen intervention watch, while the U.S. earnings season and a congress of China's ruling Communist Party kick off. Growing expectations of a government u-turn on most of its unfunded tax cuts should end much of the pain. The carnage in British gilts has exposed vulnerabilities in the pensions sector, shining a light on financial stability risks. The IMF warns of "disorderly asset repricings" and "financial market contagion." A market slide has moderated stock valuations, but a downgrade in the earnings outlook could dampen equities' attractiveness.

REUTERS/Srdjan Zivulovic/File PhotoLONDON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Auto forecaster S&P Global Mobility warned on Tuesday that, under a worst case scenario, Europe's energy crisis could cut its car production by close to 40%, or more than 1 million vehicles, per quarter through the end of 2023. In a report titled 'Winter is Coming,' S&P Global Mobility said the auto industry's supply chain - already reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine - "may face extensive pressure" from soaring energy costs or even power cuts. Starting this quarter through the end of 2023, S&P Global Mobility had forecast quarterly production from European car assembly plants would be between 4 million and 4.5-million units. But "with potential utility restrictions" that could be cut to as little as 2.75 million to 3 million units per quarter. Edwin Pope, S&P Global Mobility principal analyst for materials and lightweighting, told Reuters the analysis was conducted before the likely sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines late last month.
Flu cases are already rising in parts of the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The convergence of viruses is hitting health care systems as they're forced to reckon with staffing shortages that worsened during the pandemic. Staffing deficits mean there is little wiggle room to accommodate any additional surges of patients, whether they're sick with Covid, flu or other illness. But as the cold weather sets in and people increasingly gather indoors, Covid cases are expected to rise. The vast majority of Covid cases circulating now are an omicron subvariant, BA.5.

Many of the most destructive and potentially deadly impacts of a hurricane — including storm surge, flooding and rainfall — are not accounted for in a storm's category number. "Hurricane Ian is a very large, slow-moving hurricane. "There have been several alternative scales proposed over the years and none have gained enough attention or traction by the National Hurricane Center," Collins said. "It is important to have such evidence before even proposing to the National Hurricane Center that this should be considered as a replacement." Kantha said the National Hurricane Center acts conservatively and carefully with changes, particularly those with legal implications.
