Read previewThere's a running gag that Jensen Huang is to AI fanboys what Taylor Swift is to Swifties. Nvidia's GTC event, starting on Monday, should answer that. AdvertisementMatt Bryson, an analyst at Wedbush, expects Nvidia to lift the lid on the B100, the next-generation version of its H100 GPU. Can AI models eventually reason? Of course, industry watchers will look for any sign that the Nvidia and AI mania might be about to slow down.

I think Jensen deserves one day a year when he can trace out a vision without a per share attached to it. Sure, plenty of people in line Saturday would, correctly I think, say to "own it, don't trade it." Sure, I was sweating "own it, don't trade it." And, can you imagine if you owned but didn't trade Intel from 1990 to 2000? (Don't tell current Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, who thinks it is still alive.)

A few years ago, the idea of deliberately blocking the sun to combat climate change was so taboo for scientists. The most discussed approach involves spraying tiny particles into the stratosphere to reflect sunlight and cool the planet. Other proposals include injecting sea salt into clouds to increase their reflectivity or using giant space parasols to block the sun. I’m increasingly convinced that we should do more research on solar geoengineering. The alternative is clandestine research controlled by corporations or autocratic regimes, lurching toward deployment without knowing — or knowing and not sharing — the true risks.

Why do phones need apps? At this year's Mobile World Congress, the future of the smartphone and how we connect were firmly under the microscope. Deutsche Telekom and Brain.ai demoed one such instance at MWC: a smartphone with no apps. It's just an idea for now, but it's prompting an interesting question: Why assume the smartphone of the future has apps at all? But the smartphone industry is slumping, and there's a "need to invigorate the upgrade cycle," Milanesi told BI.

Who will buy TikTok from ByteDance?

At $100 billion, there are few companies that could afford to buy TikTok outright. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal wrote that Kotick “floated the idea of partnering to buy TikTok to a table of people that included OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.”CNN couldn’t independently confirm the report. Its one go at the social media scene, the buggy and short-lived Ping, was one of Apple’s biggest flops. And any tech executive or private equity investor thinking of buying TikTok would need to be prepared to enter the social media quagmire. A key question in assessing the value of a TikTok deal is whether China would allow ByteDance to export its algorithm — the secret sauce that keeps TikTok users glued to their phones.

Here’s a look at the world's first comprehensive set of AI rules:HOW DOES THE AI ACT WORK? The law’s early drafts focused on AI systems carrying out narrowly limited tasks, like scanning resumes and job applications. The astonishing rise of general purpose AI models, exemplified by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, sent EU policymakers scrambling to keep up. Rules for general purpose AI systems like chatbots will start applying a year after the law takes effect. Reddit aims to raise up to $748 million as part of its upcoming IPO, in which the social media company is seeking a valuation of about to $6.5 billion. The company plans to sell about 22 million shares between a range of $31 to $34 per share, according to a corporate filing released Monday. OpenAI has challenged a foundational claim Tesla CEO Elon Musk made in the lawsuit he filed against the startup earlier this month. "There is no Founding Agreement, or any agreement at all with Musk, as the complaint itself makes clear," OpenAI said in a document on file with California's superior court for San Francisco County. "The Founding Agreement is instead a fiction Musk has conjured to lay unearned claim to the fruits of an enterprise he initially supported, then abandoned, then watched succeed without him." Musk quoted OpenAI's 2015 certificate of incorporation with the Delaware secretary of state, asserting that it "memorialized" the founding agreement. "Seeing the remarkable technological advances OpenAI has achieved, Musk now wants that success for himself," OpenAI said in its filing.

Here's how much Altman's Reddit stake could be worth — and why it's not as much as some say. Business Insider estimates that OpenAI CEO Altman owns a maximum of just about 1.66 million shares of Reddit. Using the company's estimated price per share of $31 to $34, Altman's stake in Reddit could be worth between $51.4 million and $56.4 million. We know that the development process was running late and over budget, so Musk needed capital. We did not know he'd suggested that OpenAI raise $1 billion, merge with Tesla, and name him CEO. He's angry at OpenAI for giving other investors the opportunity to invest in a powerful company he wanted for himself. So now Musk is turning back to OpenAI, hoping the latest charmless offensive can help shore up his empire. If Musk indeed believed OpenAI needed him or Tesla to succeed, he was as belligerent about it as he was wrong.
