(AP) — Arkansas lawmakers on Thursday voted to audit the purchase of a $19,000 lectern for Gov. The Republican Party of Arkansas reimbursed the state for the purchase on Sept. 14, and Sanders’ office has called the use of a state credit card for the lectern an accounting error. Sanders’ office said it received the lectern in August. Sanders’ office has not said what features contributed to the lectern’s seemingly high cost. The restaurant owner said the law was overbroad, was written vaguely and violated First Amendment rights by chilling speech. Venues that violated the law faced fines and the possibility for their liquor licenses to be suspended or revoked.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republicans who control the Wisconsin Senate's elections committee retaliated Tuesday against one of the three Democratic elections commissioners who tried to block them from voting to fire the state's nonpartisan top elections official earlier this year. The committee voted along party lines against confirming Democratic Commissioner Joseph Czarnezki, who was appointed to the Wisconsin Elections Commission in May by Democratic Gov. The bipartisan elections commission, which consists of three Democrats and three Republicans, deadlocked in June on a vote to reappoint nonpartisan Administrator Meagan Wolfe. Senate Republicans proceeded anyways, voting last month to fire her. Democratic Sen. Mark Spreitzer, a member of the elections committee, accused Republicans of bowing to pressure from elections skeptics on Tuesday.

Taiwan celebrates Oct. 10 as its national day, marking an uprising in 1911 that ended China's last imperial dynasty and ushered in the Republic of China. Taiwan Premier Chen Chien-jen, a DPP member himself, dismissed Ma's criticism, saying Ma had attended festivities previously when the English translation was Taiwan National Day. Taiwan's president, Tsai Ing-wen, will give a major speech on national day, and there will also be a military parade in front of the presidential office.
