Swiss rail authorities said repairs to the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world's deepest traffic tunnel and longest of its kind, will take several months after the extent of the damage from a recent freight service derailment was found to be "significantly greater" than initially estimated. The operator currently assumes that both tunnel tubes will be available again for all rail traffic "to a limited extent" at the beginning of next year, while the undamaged east tunnel tube should be able to operate from Aug. 23 for freight traffic. It means that rail passengers traveling between north and southernmost Switzerland will be forced to take a more scenic route over the coming months. The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a high-speed railway route through the Swiss Alps.

TOKYO, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Passengers on Japan's super-fast bullet trains have long enjoyed ordering coffee, ice cream or boxed lunches from staff pushing a snack cart, savouring the treats as they whipped past landmarks such as Mount Fuji. But faced with a looming labour shortage and a trend for more people to buy food before boarding the train, on-board snack cart services between the cities of Tokyo and Osaka will reach the end of the line on Oct. 31. The online response was despondent, with "Super-Cold Shinkansen Ice Cream" trending 5th on the X platform formerly known as Twitter and "In-Train Service" 6th within hours of the announcement. "I remember that I enjoyed the ice cream every time I got on the train, and when I jumped on the last train without eating, I was saved by the sandwiches sold there," one user said. "While cost reductions are important for a company, on-board snack cart services are also important for the enjoyment of the traveller's experience," another user wrote.

CNN —At least 15 people were killed and 40 injured after a train derailed in Pakistan on Sunday, according to state public broadcaster Radio Pakistan. The train derailed near Nawabshah in the southern Sindh province of Pakistan, the public broadcaster reported, adding that it was heading from Karachi to Havelian. Pictures from the scene showed twisted wreckage and people clambering on the train’s roof.
