The Conference Board's consumer confidence gauge just hit its highest level in two years. The Conference BoardAmericans have rosier views of the labor market, the data showed, and more people reported feeling "good" about family finances while fewer reported feeling "bad." "[B]oth indicators are on an upswing as consumers take positive signals from the resilient labor market and receding inflation in recent months," the Barclays analysts wrote. The improving economic outlook reflects easing inflation and the ongoing resilience of the labor market, Peterson said. "This likely reveals consumers' belief that labor market conditions will remain favorable."

Summary Consumer confidence index increases to 117.0 in JulyLabor market differential rises to 37.2 from 32.5 in JuneHouse prices continue upward trend in MayWASHINGTON, July 25 (Reuters) - U.S. consumer confidence increased to a two-year high in July amid a persistently tight labor market and receding inflation, bolstering the economy's prospects in the near term. That supports economists' views that consumer spending was flattening out after rising at its fastest pace in two years in the first quarter. The Conference Board's consumer confidence index increased to 117 this month, the highest reading since July 2021, from 110.1 in June. TIGHT LABOR MARKETThe survey's so-called labor market differential, derived from data on respondents' views on whether jobs are plentiful or hard to get, increased to 37.2 this month from 32.8 in June, a sign labor market conditions remain tight despite job growth slowing. And while more households planned to buy houses, they could run into affordability challenges as tight supply pushes up prices.

Drones have been invaluable for both Ukraine and Russia, completing attacks and conducting reconnaissance. These assets, which come in all shapes and sizes, will have uses in the ongoing war against Ukraine and in future conflicts. Russia previously accused Ukraine of using long-range drones to strike bases deep inside Russian territory. Meanwhile, Russia has used drones for similar purposes, such as battlefield reconnaissance. Kyiv and other cities have repeatedly been battered by one-way explosive drones, like the Iranian-made Shaheds.

"It's more of an evolutionary technology than a revolutionary technology." But Cowen managing director Cai von Rumohr said investors should be prepared for timelines to be pushed back, as this is still considered "early-stage tech." "Given the push for climate and to basically reduce carbon emissions, I think, at some point, there's going to be a market," von Rumohr said. The outlook is still clouded by many variables, von Rumohr said. "It's definitely an important investment opportunity for investors," Moeller said.

JPMorgan is turning more cautious on shares of Joby Aviation in the wake of its recent stock outperformance. Analyst Bill Peterson downgraded the electric aircraft stock to underweight from neutral. For the year, Joby shares are up 200%. Along with the downgrade, Peterson lifted his price target to $6 from $5 a share, reflecting 40% downside from Monday's close. He views Blade Air Mobility as a potentially "safer way" to currently play the advanced air mobility trend.

JPMorgan downgrades this aluminum stock ahead of earnings
  + stars: | 2023-07-14 | by ( Alex Harring | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Analyst Bill Peterson downgraded the stock to neutral from overweight and slashed his price target to $36 from $54 in the runup to its earnings report next week. Despite an approximately 90% correlation between Alcoa shares and aluminum prices over the past decade, Alcoa has underperformed the metal by 7% since April. Aluminum prices as a whole should also be cheaper than previously forecasted in both the fourth quarter and 2024, but may find support in the second half of next year as inventories thin out. Cost pressure could also remain into 2024 given the lower bauxite grade feed for refineries. As a group, Peterson said he remained constructive on aluminum stocks in the long term.

[1/3] US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen speaks during her meeting with China's Vice Premier He Lifeng (out of frame) at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on July 8, 2023. Yellen said nothing publicly to indicate that the U.S. was poised to ease tariffs, but commentators in China were hopeful, amid a U.S. Trade Representative review. "While U.S might continue its technological curbs on China, a reduction or exemption of non-core tariffs against China is possible." Yellen last year advocated eliminating some duties on "non-strategic" goods as a way to ease some specific costs amid high inflation. Haley has said she would push Congress to revoke China’s trade status until China curbs its alleged role in the fentanyl trade.

One unit ran a "hackathon," or collaborative engineering event, of so-called generative AI, technology that produces text, images or other new content based on past data. The division, Verafin, was exploring how to imbue such AI into its product for fighting financial crime, he said, adding the technology could create investigative reports. Still, despite using other forms of AI for years, Nasdaq's latest work remains experimental; no code has been published yet drafted by AI, Peterson said. Nasdaq has accessed a preview of Amazon's answer to the generative AI race, namely Amazon Bedrock, a pick-your-preferred technology approach that includes Claude AI from the startup Anthropic. On the longer-term horizon for Nasdaq is integrating the Thoma Bravo-owned software firm Adenza, subject to closure of the $10.5 billion-deal Nasdaq announced last month.

Women’s labor force participation has rebounded from the pandemic “she-cession” and returned to its pre-pandemic form of making progressively historic labor market gains. By February of 2020, the labor force participation rate for prime working-age women was 77% — just shy of the record 77.3% set during the dot-com era, BLS data shows. The pandemic walloped the leisure and hospitality and education and health services sectors, where women make up the majority of the workforce. The economic evolution and recovery from the pandemic helped accelerate favorable drivers for women to enter the workforce. Separately, new research shows that although women were outnumbered by men in the US workforce, women could be disproportionately affected by businesses’ adoption of generative AI: One recent analysis estimates that 79% of working women (nearly 59 million) are in occupations susceptible to disruption and automation.

In addition to earning commissions, the Premium Wire volumes helped them reach higher compensation tiers, known as kickers. For the first time, the Premium Wire product made economic sense. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, rising 0.2%. When adjusted for inflation, consumer spending was unchanged. Data for April was revised lower to show the so-called real consumer spending rising only 0.2% instead of 0.5% as previously reported. With consumer spending softening, inflation subsided. The so-called core PCE price index increased 4.6% on a year-on-year basis in May after advancing 4.7% in April.

A former Florida sheriff’s deputy who failed to confront the gunman at a Parkland high school five years ago, and instead backed away from the building while the students and teachers inside endured a deadly barrage, was found not guilty of child neglect and other crimes on Thursday. When Mr. Peterson’s behavior was revealed after the shooting, critics — including some fellow police officers — painted him as being too scared to face a heavily armed gunman. His actions outraged the Parkland community, and Mr. Peterson was cast as the central character in a morality tale about cowardice and law enforcement’s duty to protect children. The gunman was sentenced last year to life in prison. Mr. Peterson was the lone armed resource officer assigned to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during the Feb. 14, 2018, massacre.
