Aside from EVs, GM touted its lowering capital costs and the company’s flexibility to produce both traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines and EVs. Shares of GM were roughly level aside from a roughly 3% increase during the beginning of the event. The change to Ultium comes after GM spent billions of dollars to develop in-house “Ultium” batteries and technologies that the automaker previously touted as “revolutionary” and the ultimate technologies to be able to build a profitable EV business. The company said the batteries and the technologies will remain, but the name “Ultium” will not, other than production operations such as its “Ultium Cells” joint venture plants with LG Energy Solution. GM has been rethinking its EV battery strategy amid changing market conditions and an influx of new, outside executives, including Tesla veterans JP Clausen, who now leads GM manufacturing, and Kurt Kelty, GM’s vice president of battery.

Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign operation crossed the $1 billion fundraising threshold in September, two months after she took over as the Democratic Party's 2024 standard bearer, according to two people familiar with the numbers. That figure includes money raised by the campaign committee itself and by a campaign-affiliated joint fundraising committee that also collects cash for the Democratic National Committee and state parties. The staggering pace suggests Harris has been able to sustain enthusiasm among donors, large and small, as the campaign enters the stretch run before the Nov. 5 election. Presidential campaigns tend to take in more money as an election nears, but a clip of roughly half a billion dollars a month is unheard of. Harris has opened up a huge cash advantage over her Republican rival, Trump, who had raised just $309 million for his campaign through the end of August.

The best-of-five series continues with Game 2 in New York on Sunday afternoon, before Minnesota hosts Game 3 on Oct. 16. Connecticut eliminated Minnesota here in the decisive Game 3 of the first round last season. Since winning Game 5 of the WNBA Finals in 2017 for their fourth championship in seven years, the Lynx were just 1-4 in winner-take-all games in the playoffs. In reality, the data — no matter how bad or good — probably won’t make an ounce of difference for most voters. Most voters likely don’t even follow the overall economic trends, let alone one month’s data, he said. Instead, their views on the economy are shaped by how far their dollars are stretching today compared to recent times. That’s a higher share compared to when voters were asked the same question in 2022. But the average American does not wait for news to come out to form an opinion on how the economy is functioning, she said.

US stocks traded mixed as investors looked ahead to the central bank's meeting minutes. Traders are anticipating a quarter-point rate cut in November. Monetary policy is in focus after an unexpectedly hot job report in September, fueling doubt over whether the Fed will issue another jumbo rate cut this year. "The tone of the Fed minutes should not change expectations of further rate cuts—the Fed is still scrambling to catch up with inflation slowing in the US, and started cutting rates late. AdvertisementAccording to Pantheon Macroeconomics, the Fed is more likely to begin cutting rates in 25-basis-point increments rather than issuing another 50-basis-point rate cut.

China's property stimulus measures delivered a modest boost to the market, but they are not enough to turn around the troubled sector, according to analysts. Home sales ticked up in some cities during China's week-long holiday, as stimulus measures boosted homebuyers' sentiment, a report by research group China Index Academy showed. Average daily sales in Beijing jumped 81%, in terms of floor area, compared to the same holiday period the year before. Last year's Golden Week holiday was between Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. The average daily sales figure stood at 107,000 square meters this year, the report showed, against 177,000 square meters in 2021, 158,000 square meters in 2022, and 145,000 square meters in 2023.

GM's investor day showcased many of the company's current achievements, but did not provide much insight on strategy," Bernstein analyst Daniel Roeska wrote Wednesday in an investor note. "GM's Investor Day yesterday didn't provide much in the way of sharp shifts in strategy. Through the first half of 2024, GM earned $8.3 billion in EBIT-adjusted and generated $6.4 billion in adjusted automotive free cash flow. GM's 2024 financial guidance includes anticipated capital spending of between $10.5 billion and $11.5 billion. GM's operations in China have experienced a decade-long slide in earnings, and executives said they are discussing restructuring options with their China-based partners.

New Zealand's central bank has slashed its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points after its monetary policy meeting, marking a second straight cut to its benchmark interest rate. The cut brings the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's interest rate to 4.75% from 5.25%. The central bank said at the time that the pace of further easing will depend on how confident it is about a low inflation environment. New Zealand's annual inflation rate hit 7.3% in the June quarter 2022, its highest level in over three decades.

Billionaire investor Bill Gross says the stock market's record-breaking run is set to slow. His favorite investments at the moment include MLP pipelines and municipal income funds. "No bear market, but it's not the same bull market anymore," Gross said, adding that equities are set for "low buy positive" returns going forward. He also sees municipal income funds as a worthwhile investment, as many have offered over 7% tax-free yields. Gross named the DWS Municipal Income Trust as one example but noted that there are between 20 and 30 others to choose from.

"A few participants also added that a 25 basis point move could signal a more predictable path of policy normalization." Since the meeting, economic indicators have showed that the labor market is perhaps stronger than officials favoring the 50 basis point move had expected. The minutes noted that the vote to approve the 50 basis point cut came "in light of the progress on inflation and the balance of risks" against the labor market. Though the document was more detailed about the debate over whether to approve the 25 basis point cut, there was not as much information about why voters supported the larger move. Since the Fed meeting, both the 10- and 2-year Treasury yields have surged about 40 basis points.

Don't drink so much that you can't properly drive a golf cart or respect staff members. AdvertisementNot long ago, I started working as a "cart girl" at my local golf course. This was my second summer working at the course, and golf balls had never come close to hitting me before. Unfortunately, I regularly dealt with golfers making uncomfortable comments about my body or trying to touch me. Also, if you're too drunk to treat employees with respect, you're also probably too inebriated to check your surroundings and safely drive your golf cart.

Presidential campaigns will report full details of their September fundraising and spending to the Federal Election Commission later this month. The $1 billion figure for Harris was first reported by NBC News.

Still, the analyst notes that even cases where an administration cuts defense spending, stocks can still carve out gains. The defense stocks Morgan Stanley covers have outperformed the S & P 500 since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Liwag said. Wild swings in mortgage rates discouraged almost everyone from venturing out into the market. As I wrote earlier this year, a gummed-up housing market — the Ice Age I was talking about — is good for nobody. When mortgage rates hit multidecade lows during the pandemic, millions of people were able to snag or refinance their way into cheaper monthly costs. That'd be within spitting distance of what the experts at John Burns Research and Consulting, a housing-research firm, call the "magic mortgage rate." In other words, trying to predict mortgage rates — and buying or selling a home accordingly — is a fool's errand.

Japan's inflation-adjusted wages fell in August after two months of increases during the summer bonus season, while household spending also declined, data showed on Tuesday, knocking chances of the central bank raising interest rates any time soon. Real wages in the world's fourth-largest economy fell 0.6% in August from the same month a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Separate data showed household spending declining 1.9% from the year-earlier in August, potentially raising doubts about the strength of private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan's economy. The fall, however, was smaller than the market estimate for a 2.6% drop based on a Reuters poll, and on a seasonally adjusted basis, spending rose 2.0% from the previous month, marking the fastest pace of increase in a year. Those payments rose 2.7% in August versus a revised 6.6% in July and 7.8% in June.
