He said that once implemented, the prices on negotiated drugs will decrease for up to 9 million seniors who currently pay as much as $6,497 in out-of-pocket costs per year for these prescriptions. This kicks off the negotiation process for the 10 drugs whose new prices will go into effect in 2026. U.S. laws had prohibited Medicare from negotiating pharmaceutical prices as part of its prescription drug program that began about 20 years ago. CMS Director Dr. Meena Seshamani said Medicare plans to use a review process to make sure insurance companies keep clinically appropriate access to negotiated drugs. Two analysts said they expect the negotiated prices to move beyond Medicare and affect commercial markets for these drugs by 2026, when they come into effect.

Fiasp and NovoLog, insulins made by Novo Nordisk The Medicare negotiations are the centerpiece of the Biden administration's efforts to rein in the rising cost of medications in the U.S. Drugmakers such as Merck and Johnson & Johnson and their supporters aim to derail the negotiations, filing at least eight lawsuits in recent months seeking to declare the policy unconstitutional. Drugmakers' legal challengesMerck, Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Astellas Pharma are among the companies suing to halt the negotiation process. The suits make similar and overlapping claims that Medicare negotiations are unconstitutional. Biden and his top health officials have embraced the lawsuits as evidence that they're making progress in the fight to cut drug prices.

US President Joe Biden speaks about lowering healthcare costs, in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC, on August 29, 2023. "Boy, we've been fighting Big Pharma for a long time," Biden said Tuesday from the White House. On Tuesday, the White House announced ten prescription drugs that will be subject to the first-ever Medicare price negotiations, which will go into effect in 2026. "Big Pharma [is] charging Americans more than three times what they charge other countries simply because they can," Biden said. Nonetheless, Democrats argue the president should be given a second term to, in Biden's words, "finish the job."

NN Group’s deal spree is finally delivering
  + stars: | 2023-08-29 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, Aug 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - NN Group (NN.AS) is reaping the benefits of scale in its Dutch backyard. Benign weather in the Netherlands, one of the few European states to escape extreme summer weather, helped. But the seeds of NN’s resurgence lie back in 2016 when it began a 3 billion euro deal splurge, first on domestic rival Delta Lloyd and then VIVAT’s general insurance arm. That helped it hike a 10% share of the general insurance market to 24% as of 2021. NN has outperformed its country rival Aegon (AEGN.AS), boosting shareholder returns by 64% since it bought Delta Lloyd in 2016.

India is warming up to a cooling China

A screening policy that dramatically slowed investments into India looks ripe for some fine-tuning. India appears to be warming up to a larger Chinese presence in its businesses three years since it introduced an approval regime for investments from countries sharing a land border. Modi has made a deepening financial relationship with China dependent on a warming political one. India is “open” to investments from China, the former’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar told Financial Times in an interview published in July. Shein is set to re-enter India through a partnership with Reliance Retail, The Wall Street Journal reported in May.

White House inflicts Big Pharma ills

If just one or two big medications were going to be renegotiated, the industry could shoulder the change. The IRA, signed into law last year, allows Medicare to negotiate prices for some of its most costly drugs. Though specificities are unclear, a quick look at one of the biggest sellers under the program, blood thinner Eliquis, suggests Big Pharma could shoulder a discount. At 11 times earnings over the next 12 months, that’s less than 10% of the firm’s $205 billion market capitalization. Put this on the same multiple of 11 times, and it would be a $275 billion hit to the industry.

REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON/CHICAGO, Aug 24 (Reuters) - A highly mutated COVID variant called BA.2.86 has now been detected in Switzerland and South Africa in addition to Israel, Denmark, the U.S. and the U.K., according to a leading World Health Organization official. It has since been detected in other symptomatic patients, in routine airport screening, and in wastewater samples in a handful of countries. That the known cases are not linked suggests it is already circulating more widely, particularly given reduced surveillance worldwide, she said. There have been nine such cases detected as of Aug. 23 and the variant was also found in wastewater in Switzerland. Jha and others, including the European public health agency and COVAX, the global program for getting vaccines to the world's poorest, said COVID surveillance and defenses could be reactivated in the event of a major infection wave.

The volumes of the weekly injection that the Danish drugmaker has delivered to the country so far have fallen short of strong demand, the wholesalers said. "Demand is by far exceeding the available volumes," a spokesperson for Noweda, which has almost a quarter of the German drug wholesale trade, told Reuters, adding the problem was nationwide. Giuliani helped Purdue Pharma strike a deal with the government to keep selling the drug. Purdue Pharma hired Giuliani back in 2002, representing the first client his consulting firm ever landed, The New York Times reported in 2007. By getting Brownlee to agree to prosecute the parent company, Purdue Frederick, rather than Purdue Pharma, Giuliani and his team were also able to prevent a ban against Purdue Pharma doing future business with the federal government, which manages public health programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and the Veterans Administration health system, The Guardian reported. Under our settlement, Purdue Pharma would cease to exist and Knoa Pharma, a newly formed company with a public-minded mission, would emerge. The settlement would deliver over $10 billion of value for opioid crisis abatement, overdose rescue medicines, and victim compensation."
